Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue vs Seiko SPB143 Comparison: Which Is The Best Entry-Level Luxury Dive Watch?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue and the Seiko SPB143 were arguably the two most popular releases of 2020. Both are relatively affordable dive watches that offer amazing value for the brands they represent. In many ways they are quite different. One is classically Swiss and the other is classically Japanese. Both are reinterpretations of dive watch archetypes they created with the Tudor Snowflake and the Seiko 62MAS. Both are packed with great in house movements from their respective brands.
Despite their differences I think that they are comparable because I think that both of these dive watches can very easily become someone’s everyday dive watch. Both of these watches are comfortable on wrist and both of them are strap monsters. So in this video I will compare the Black Bay 58 Blue and the SPB143 and score them on a point system that I made up including nine categories (six worth 10 points, three worth 5 points). Which one will come out on top? Keep track of your own scores and let me know what you ended up with and what you think of my unexpected outcome!

    Yessss the moment I saw the post on Instagram i immediately bought one! unfortunately it came after I recorded this video but it solved the problem of being in between links and now the bracelet is wearable! However, despite Uncle Seiko's good work im still not a fan of the BB58 bracelet so I might have to give one of his bracelets a go soon!

    The fact that so many people have even done comparisons of the spb and the bb58 is a great testament to the Seiko given that the SLA should be the true comparison given the parity in price to the bb58 and the SLA series are many leagues above the SPB

    Love this comparison! The bb58 gilt was the hardest watch I’ve ever had to sell. I concur with literally everything you said. Ultimately sold it because of the jank bracelet comfort issues and the green lume that just looked bad with the gilt (I’m surprised no one talks about this!). The blue solves that problem though.

    Thanks I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the comparison! Actually I have been on and off about selling the blue bay for about a year now! Like you, the bracelet is a big part of it but actually the problem has been solved by Uncle Seiko! He made half links for the stock bracelet and it fixed the fit however the bracelet is still disappointing me a bit. I never thought about the gilt dial clashing with the green lume! It would make for an interesting pair lol!

    Seiko is pretty simple. You have to accept some QC issues, a usually poorer movement than Swiss competition, for a well-built workhorse of a watch that looks stunning in terms of design. Watches like SPB 143 are hard to beat if you don't spend into Omega territory. I find it better looking than higher-priced models from Oris, Tudor, Longines, Rado, etc. Looks are essential in the watch business, and Seiko hit the nail in the head with their divers in this area.

    Awesome job! Keep these comparisons coming 👍🏼 Have to say though I think the BB58 (particularly this blue version) should score higher than the SPB143 on 3 areas. Dial: I love that shade of blue which is just gorgeous to me, yet super wearable because it's restrained and desaturated. Plus, snowflake hands are so iconic to the brand. Uniqueness: I think the BB is more unique and recognisable. Happy Index: Well, the BB58 makes me happier. But at the end of the day, different strokes for different folks, which is what makes life interesting. Cheers! 🍻

    @@thewatchidiot Unc Seiko deserves a medal for making that half link! I'm lucky to get a good fit with the stock bracelet but I totally get how a poor fit can really ruin the experience. Very glad it's working so well for you. My gripe with the bracelet is not fit, but comfort. Somehow I'm just getting some mild hotspots and that means I need to take the watch off if I'm wearing it for long periods just to give the wrist a break. Sucks.

    I find the value for money part really odd. Everything else is compared head to head. But then you don’t compare the value. Surely if they are so similar then they should be judged against each other for that too. For example you give the Tudor a much higher mark for its movement based on accuracy, but given the movement is the heartbeat of the watch and the Tudor is twice the price, of course it should have a superior movement. But then value for money you don’t compare them to each other? Weird. But I really enjoyed the video and love both my back bay and my seiko 143.

  • @jimmason8502

    Not twice the price, the BB58 is $4800 on Chrono 24 ATM and the Seiko can be had for about $1000. This is not even a fair comparison, one is a solid tool watch and one is a luxury watch. I am wearing my SPB143 as I type this and while I love it, it is not a Black Bay by any stretch. Value for money? Seiko all the way but I still want a BB.

    the seiko can be purchased for $890. Yes the Tudor had a better movement buy its not $3000 or $2000 better. The seiko is a tool watch and its movement can outlast the Tudor but not as refined as the Tudor. If the Tudor is not serviced in 4 years it will be out of time. But the seiko will continue off for 15-20 seconds a day without service all the same bit will tik for 20 years without service

I used to have a Khaki field mechanical a couple years ago and I loved how thin it was and the overall aesthetic. However I had to sell it because I couldnt quite justify owning it just for the sake of owning it as much as I liked it. It would be interesting to compare that to the new seiko field watches because those have definitely caught my eye and I love the day date complication with the kanji day wheel!

    I very recently bought the Black Bay 58 Navy Blue to compliment a range of predominantly black-dialled watches in my collection that include the classic Rolex Submariner Date 16610 that I've cherished for 19 yrs. The Tudor is a super, very well-made luxury timepiece and I appreciate its rather understated blue dial and aluminium bezel compared to the 'bling-blue' ceramic of my Omega Seamaster 300. Like-for-like think of the Blue 58 as a more modern take on its original black and gilt sibling. The blue really pops in daylight or in well-lit rooms and a pleasure to wear. Although not quite up there with the Rolex in the absolute quality stakes - but why should it when it's barely 35% of a Sub's retail price - go to an AD and try one on. An in-house COSC certified movement, 70 hrs power reserve.... you won't be disappointed.

    I great comparison video TWI. Decent scoring criteria set out up front makes this far more interesting. Personally I do not have a Seiko diver (yet) so could not comment on that piece but I do have a BB58 guilt dial and can understand most of your comments. The bracelet on my example fit's a treat but I can understand when a wrist is between bracelet adjustment options it just doesn't feel right. I also find that there is no colour difference between the bracelet and case but I have heard that the case on the blue model looks a tad brighter, I've never compared them though. If I was to suggest an additional criteria it would be based on "Fit for the job", no change on your scores as they are both divers with 200M water resistance and great lume. The BB58 bezel was already covered early on in the review. The "Fit for the job" criteria could cover anything from dress watch, sports watch, robust watch (come on G-Shock) or a cross between them all.You could even score each watch against all those sub categories and add them up. Keep up the great work as always.

  • @thewatchidiot

    @thewatchidiot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Anthony, it was tough deciding which categories to include! Yeah the bracelet for me is by far the weakest link even when not including the lack of adjustability which is unfortunate! A watch like this deserves an amazing bracelet and I wish I could experience the way you and other fans of the bracelet experience it! Fit for the job/ Utility is a great idea for sure bc in the end a watch should be good at what its supposed to do! In this case the Seiko might get a half point bump for having a dive extension i suppose but the beauty of the BB58 bezel might even it out again lol. Im thinking it could be 5 points? Bc its important that a watch fulfills its purpose but i dont think that its necessarily a deal breaker bc watches are bought from the heart. What do you think? Also are you on instagram? I'm thinking of selling my Leica M3 , and if possible, id love to get your take on it because this will be my first time selling a camera! you can also email me at thewatchidiot@gmail.com if youd like!

    @@thewatchidiot I think 5 points is fine for fit for the job but I would consider watches that cover more than one category like sports style dress watch etc. You are completely right though, watch purchases are not made by the brain but the heart. pr we would all be wearing G-Shocks all the time. 😁 The Leica M3 is a classic, if I recall correctly it has a 1:1 magnification viewfinder (i.e. no reduction for wide angle like most do) I also think the widest angle real view is for 35mm lenses. It has the auto switching frame lines that adjust depending on the focal length of the lens though obviously not if a 28mm lens was fitted, that would bring up one of the tele lens lines either 75mm, 90mm or 135 I can't remember. The M3 also had one of the widest effective rangefinder distance for a 35mm miniature camera (more accurate for longer lense focus). The horizontal cloth shutter is near silent in operation and X flash sync was 1/50th of a second (using the old shutter speed scale) or 1/60th (using the moders scale). Film loads from the bottom that is a lot different to many film cameras that have a flip back. If you have any papers like the last service date etc that would add a few $$$. If you have genuine Leica lenses I would list them separately and you will get more in total. I did when I sold my 0.72X M7's a long while back. I'm not on instagram or twitter and the last time I checked FB was years ago. I don't really miss it as I didn't really use it.

    I would have given the comfortability the same score. While seiko is thicker, the Tudor case has more material at the bottom, making it noticeable when you bend your wrist at times. That being said I wouldn’t want Tudor to take away any steel from the case, it looks great as it is. I would have also given the strap monsterability a higher score for seiko because of the skin diver case. Your last category is spot on the seiko is more fun but for me it’s also because it’s a less expensive watch with diashield so it gives a care-free beater vibe

  • @thewatchidiot

    Yeah both watches are comfortable for sure however I had to dock points from the seiko bc for me the watch head is relatively heavy and sometimes I found it to be a little tiring and some straps couldnt handle the weight whereas the BB58 is just beautifully balanced. A few notes: For better future benchmarking I would scale up to a 100-score rating instead of 75. In my personal opinion I think more weight should be given to your "Happiness Index". I think people mostly buy luxury watches these days based on how it makes them feel. Also, comparing two very different colors will of course skew the "Strap Monsterability" rating; but I love the overall concept!

  • @thewatchidiot

    @thewatchidiot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah 100 point scale is definitely ideal, I wanted to go for it originally but I wanted to introduce different weights and then at that point there would be way too many categories and the video would get too long lol! But that's a very good point about the happy index bc like you said a huge part of the purchase decision comes down to how we feel about the watch regardless of the more practical aspects! So then we'll be up to 80 pts with that and then I think I'll add "fit for purpose" for 5 points as well at 85. 2-3 more categories for 100! Any ideas?

    Of course the scores are just for fun and i always factor in someone's taste, preferences and biases into a review but in the future may try to compare two models that are within closer price range. It is easy when there is a large differential for people unfamiliar with these watches to think if they end up so close that the higher priced one isn't worth the money or that they're being mislead to give it a chance. I certainly don't expect the same things for a 100 and 1000 dollar watch but value can become more nuanced

  • @thewatchidiot

    @thewatchidiot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah its always good to watch multiple reviews to get a more general idea of a watch! I'm definitely planning on doing comparisons between similarly priced watches in the future bc theyll be good fun but comparisons like these (different price points) have their place to i believe. The point system can be misleading for sure if someone only saw the number and didnt see or listen to anything else I said. But i think with context and an explanation for why the category scores are the way they are, this sort of comparison can give new hobbyists an understanding that there are many nuances when it comes to deciding whether or not a watch is supposedly good and that no watch is perfect and finally that it all comes down to value for money! (I think its important to make sure no one thinks a particular watch is better just bc it has a big price tag. Quality can be found at all of price points!😁)

The Seiko may have the build quality of some entry level Swiss watches, but it's prestige level is diluted by the large portfolio of watches in various price ranges, so it's pretty hard to perceive it at a "luxury" brand, even for a watch enthusiast. It's also facing very stiff competition from Swiss competitors priced equally, such as the Mido Ocean Star heritage for vintage inspired dive watch

    Sounds like I'm giving the BB58 too much respect as a hater lol! but yeah if they made the little changes on the bracelet it could have been so close to perfect!

    Supposedly, the tudor isnt worth 3 times more than the seiko. I dont think so. I think it is appropriately priced otherwise the market will show. Also, if thats true, then the seiko is also not worth 4 times the price of a san martin diver.

    Never been a fan of the BB58, over hyped in my opinion. The bracelet fit issue and the faux rivets are a deal breaker. Also the aluminum bezel at that price point is unforgivable.

    Yeah the bracelet is a downer for sure especially since the functional issues should be easy to fix. For most watches i would agree with you that an aluminum bezel at this price would be bad, but for the BB58s, I think the look and feel of aluminum suit the vintagey aesthetic perfectly and I most likely wouldnt have bought it if it had a ceramic bezel!

    Both are a bit overhyped, imho. The Seiko looks fantastic, but.. you named it, and the Tudor, its true, is simply a rather simple watch which I find a little bit uninspiring after a time. I cant stand the snowflake hour hand anyway.

    if the dam tuder had the tuder smile text like older models and had the tuder rose instead of the dumbass shield , it would win over the seiko

    I think crown feel and winding is a huge missing piece here. There is no comparison there.

    I have a black BB58 and Spb143...the Seiko is a great "800$" watch, unfortunately not much more than that...the BB58, while much more expensive, offers quite a big chunk of Rolex quality level, while not beeing perfect, its a much, much better watch...let alone rather crappy Seiko movement in comparison.

    Seiko SPB143 is more satisfying to wear and better overall IMO.

    The thing for me is that; Tudor makes some really fine watches, but they have no date.. I can't live without a date complication. I will never buy a Tudor ontil they fix it.

    Lets be real here. The spb143 is the watch of choice for 90% of the population. You need to be a real watch enthusiast/collector to shell out that much money for a watch
