Tudor Black Bay 41 - A better more affordable Explorer?

Hard to justify $6550 for an Explorer when this can be had new for under $3000. Am I right?

    I can read the dial at 4am from the night before - the lume abides. I agree that the snowflake hands are a great design, although I think you may have to live with the watch to appreciate them; this is a tool watch that is and should be extremely legible, and that fat hour hand gets the job done. As a motorcyclist, this is the first watch that I can read while going 80mph. Just super legible. My favorite watch, by far.

    Great video. I have the blue dial 41mm version in my collection and is a great watch. Has the potential to become a collectable this one as Tudor develops the brand, grows in popularity, works the in-house Calibre into all of its watches proportionally there will be less Tudors with the ETA in and watch collectors want what they cannot have. Strange world of watch collecting. Some models when current watch collectors would never have bought - such as the Tudor Sub. Cannot buy anymore and will pay several times what it cost! Amazing.

    Dude you're right about that I remember when the Submariner's price was 4k dollars and look how expensive they are now, so that means TUDOR eventually is gonna get expensive. My advise to people get yours now while they're cheap 'cause the price is gonna go up

    Not with that ETA movement. They throw in-house movement in it and you're spot on. And, technically, you're still correct because you didn't single out this watch - Tudor is definitely what Rolex used to be, but not with this watch. Nothing with an ETA-based movement should be priced above $1.5k.

    I agree with you. I looked at the rolex air king,$6200.00 the oyster perpetual $5700.00, the explorer at $6600.00 . I decided on the black bay 41 with the black dial, $2950.00 plus tax. I wear this each day now, the only way I will get rid of this is if I trade for the Air King. I sold a 34mm rolex air king to get this, it fits much better on my 7.5 inch wrist and I love the bracelet.

I would like to add a Tudor to my collection and I like dial, especially the lume, but the lack of AR and a non in-house mvnt are holding me back from pulling the trigger at this price point. The SARX, it's seem everyone raves about the AR on it. Just wondering if the BB41 is worth twice the price.

Legible all night long (with dark adjusted vision, and dark room). And during the day, if you happen to step in a relatively dark room, you literally think your wrist is on (green) fire.

    Hi Bruce, nice video and let me say I enjoy all your vids. I had some experience of this watch and it is a nice piece, but I found that there were issues with how reflective it was in daylight. Also, I did feel this watch had a bit of an identity crisis - it has a divers dial but no divers bezel, so it either appears like an unfinished diver or some sort of diver/dress watch hybrid. I think it’s a decent option as an alternative to the Rolex Explorer, but not the best. I think a better option also comes from Tudor themselves - the Heritage Ranger, which seems to be a much underrated piece. It has the same 41mm case as the BB41, but a 47mm lug to lug making it wear a little smaller. Same 150m WR, same Tudor Calibre ETA, but rather than the divers dial it has the same Arabic/baton combo as the Explorer. In fact, you could argue that with the hand painted 3/6/9/12 the Ranger is truer to the original Explorers than the modern Rolex Explorer is. I certainly think it has a clear identity as a clean dial, no date field watch in the Explorer vein much more so than the BB41. It doesn’t have the same reflective issues as the dial is matt rather than gloss. Drilled lugs are also a nice touch. I also like that it has the Tudor Rose on both the dial and crown, rather than a mis-mash of logo’s. Having had experience of both I let the BB41 slide, but the Ranger is an absolute keeper. Glad you’re enjoying yours though, getting the wife a 32mm to match is a nice idea - and thanks for the great content, best wishes David 👍

    The watch is nice but $3000 is a lot of money (even with the Tudor name), for a watch that uses an ETA 2824, a movement that is found in many other Swiss watches that costs much less than the Tudor. Another concern is the use of anodized aluminum as the crown tube. If this watch is not worn daily, and allowed to run down before the next use, necessitating a time reset (and unless the wearer owns a watch winder), regular unscrewing and re-screwing of the crown would wear down that soft aluminum tube in no time, necessitating an expensive service. Why not use a harder material for the tube? After all, that tube is mostly covered up (by the crown).

  • @dariuszwojcik1601

    @dariuszwojcik1601

    i think the actual crown is stainless steel but has extra o ring made out of aluminum on the top of the crown. Also sadly from 2020 this watch houses selita movement and not eta. It is still well regulated but doesn't have modifications of the previous moment. I also think it is overpriced at £2510 british pounds but you can find pre owned with a excellent quality and decent discount and than it is worthy consideration.

    Hi Bruce, I always find it a bit confusing as to the value of a watch using a ETA 2824 or Selellta movement. I guess if they are testing the movement in 5 positions that does enhance the value... and if they customize the movement in other ways. Relative to the case and bracelet, does Tudor use the same steel Rolex uses (904L) or do they use the more common 316L stainless ?steel?

  • @BruceWilliams

    @BruceWilliams

    5 жыл бұрын

    Tudor uses 316l steel and personally I doubt we will see them use 904 in the future since that is one of Rolex's pride statements. ETA is valued more than Selitta, and has a better track record for performance.

    I think it's a bit of a stretch to be honest, especially if you buy into the Explorer's past. A 36mm Explorer (SEL) is where I'd be looking.

    I think an AR coating would be more of an improvement than the lume. That glare is too much compared to other watches of that price point.

    Yes the glare is really bad on this one. I had recently changed from black to blue model and can report that although they both gloss dials, the blue one doesn't have nearly as much glare as the black one but is not as versatile :)

    I like it, but it needs antireflective coating imho... those reflections, while nice, just take something away from the simplicity of the dial. Just my five cents.. cheers

    Save up for the Explorer because if you don’t you’ll always gonna want it. And I tell you it’s worth every penny. It is pure class and as good as money in the bank.

    to each it's own, i for one, tried on both dj36, expl 1. I ended buying the bb36. Why? The other watches were to blingy and flashy. Ultimately i preferred the more understated/ toolish look of the bb36. Same with the current sub, it can blind you if you look directly at it. I'd buy a 16800 anyday, not on these inflated prices for a 25yrs oldtimer tho.

    I was going to get a BB58, but the more I look at the 36, especially in blue, the more it’s growing on me. The 41 though is a bit too big. I have an old Seiko 5, which I think is about 35mm, and it wears so well on my wrist. So, a BB36 might be ideal.

    Was in a similar position and got my BB41 couple days ago. Loving it. It looks a lot better in person than on camera because of the reflection.

    I think you are right ,mostly. Based on all the reviews i also bought 36mm blue variant of this watch and it just felt too small unfortunately on my 19cm wrist. I since got 41mm variant and it is better in my eyes but it is not small watch and i would advise that if you want to purchase this watch best is to visit AD and try both in person so you can choose based on your own preference. I'm happy with 41mm but if they would sell 39mm version it would have been even better

    Why no AR coating?? This model is on the market long enough that Tudor could sort the glare and reflection issue. Otherwise, a great watch: I really like the "misfit" character of it. Neither a complete diver, a field, sport nor a dress watch, and yet totally appropriate for each and every occasion.
