Tucson Festival of Books: Feels Like Home Interview w/ Linda Ronstadt

The Director of the University of Arizona's "Digital Futures Bilingual Studio," Nancy Montoya, met with long-time friend, musical artist, and author Linda Ronstadt to hear more about her book, "Feels Like Home."
In Feels Like Home, Grammy award-winning singer Linda Ronstadt effortlessly evokes the magical panorama of the high desert, a landscape etched by sunlight and carved by wind, offering a personal tour built around meals and memories of the place where she came of age. Growing up the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and a descendant of Spanish settlers near northern Sonora, Ronstadt’s intimate new memoir celebrates the marvelous flavors and indomitable people on both sides of what was once a porous border whose denizens were happy to exchange recipes and gather around campfires to sing the ballads that shaped Ronstadt’s musical heritage. Following her bestselling musical memoir, Simple Dreams, this book seamlessly braids Ronstadt’s recollections of people and their passions in a region little understood in the rest of the United States. This road trip through the desert, written in collaboration with former New York Times writer Lawrence Downes and illustrated throughout with beautiful photographs by Bill Steen, features recipes for traditional Sonoran dishes and a bevy of revelations for Ronstadt’s admirers. If this book were a radio signal, you might pick it up on an Arizona highway, well south of Phoenix, in the glow of Ronstadt’s hometown of Tucson. It would be playing something old and Mexican from a time when the border was a place not of peril but of possibility.

Everyone always talks about Linda's extraordinary singing abilities. Rarely mentioned is how intelligent she is. Always very thoughtful, curious and well informed. She was always very helpful to other women singers as she was a pioneer in the male dominated field.

Her intelligence is reflected in all the risks she took during her career, singing and mastering all those different genres - that is intellectual integrity and honesty. Linda was always her own person, seemingly unfazed by her stardom and amazing voice.

So very proud how she knew what to do each time she started a new interest in various music field such as pop songs from the 40 and singing Mexican Music to please herself and her father and many others. Her talent is so versatile it really made you take notice of her talent.

How could anyone not appreciate and care for this lovely human? I saw Linda sing in a smallish venue in Boston in the 70's. She was opening for Jackson Browne. They were taking turns opening for one another on the tour! It remains the best concert I have ever seen. Decades later I do not live too far from her childhood's Tuscon area. Her humane way and strong wish for us as people to do the right thing is her music now, to our ears...

So humbling watching this. Today's generation would see an old lady while the rest of us see a legendary voice and gorgeous lady of the 70's & 80's. Willie Nelson said, "There are two kinds of men in this world, those who have a crush on Linda Ronstadt and those who haven't heard of her"

To go from the high powered singing voice to the lowest bass in a matter of seconds with the most natural ease possible ,is in my book unprecedented.... This wonderful lady and her sensational Bands over the decades have lit up a huge part of my musical enjoyment . We rarely see talent of the calibre of Linda Ronstadt these days unfortunately . I just discovered a song sung by Ms. Linda from 1998. Leland Sklar (highly lauded session bassist) posted the Waddy Wachtel song called Damage yesterday. It was my first time hearing it. It amazes me how powerful her voice still was at that time. At the same time it saddened me knowing what was on its way for her in the coming few years from then. As the saying goes; be thankful it all happened.

I was surprised as much as the interviewer was to learn that Linda Ronstadt had a Christmas album. I just listened to it and it is perfection--just like the rest of Linda's work.

Probably the best, and I mean best, pitch-perfect rock singer. And, of course, back then, every college-age male's visionary's girlfriend! But the expansion into light opera, showed out her versatility. I was blessed to watch Linda performing in "Pirates of Penzance" on Broadway in NYC. Outstanding.

Linda has been my lifelong favorite singer. I played her music so, so many times, and I wanted to be this beautiful, talented, woman. I had the good fortune of seeing her live, once. What a great singer. God Bless, Linda. You are loved❤️

Few recording artists know the inside and outs of the music industry of the 1970's-1980's like Linda does. Aside from being one of the best female singers of all time, she discovered and worked with more exceptional musicians than most. She was not a song writer. She didn't play an instrument. Yet, umpteen musicians wanted to work with her because when she covered a great song, she made it her own. She saw talent where talent really existed. Think of the late great Warren Zevon for example. The songs Linda covered over the years are clear indicators of her great taste and awareness of musicians and their music. Her cover of The Rolling Stones and LIttle Feat songs for example, are some of the best covers of those tracks. She never had to rely on her looks, although she could have, just her ability to be a hit maker and have that phenomenal voice. She is very well loved in the music industry.

Linda not only plays the guitar she DID write a song w/her Father, Gilbert Ronstadt & Kenny Edwards! The song "Lo Siento Mi Vida" on her "Hasten Down the Wind" album! The song is beautiful & reaches your innermost soul! Still one of my very favorites on my fav album of hers! Saw her first @ Greek Theater in Hollyweird in August 1970! Received her "Hand Sown... Home Grown" album for Christmas that year! In June 1972 took that same album cover to Knott's Berry Farm to see her again! Richie, her drummer @ the time took to her for me & she signed it! Don't think I drove home that night, must've floated, in Heaven! Been a fan, maybe a full-blown "air conditioner" since then! My email even hails my LOVE for her! She's a Musical Chameleon & THE BEST FEMALE SINGER EVER, HANDS DOWN! ❤❤❤ ✌️🤘

Love this book and Cd. I made my own DVD version with whatever I could find on KZread to match the CD. Some I had to use ones with photos and one with a montage from a movie using a song. I'm so glad I made myself try to get into the Festival of Books and though was in the back, was able to get in and hear the talk with Linda and Lawrence Downes. I had a Framed Lola Beltran album cover I brought and gave to Mr Downes hoping he could get it to Linda. The cover I acquired from PDQ records where I worked for years. Did not want to throw it away though no vinyl inside. Yay for this interview!

Thank you Linda, for your interview....I am about your age and always loved your singing...I live outside of Boston, MA. I was a go go dancer in the day...I worked with basically Black groups and it felt like home...I don't know if you ever heard of Ilanga of the G-Glefs. He recently died. He was so kind...I loved him...Again, thank you for your interview and the lovely lady who asked the questions...God bless you!

Continue to thrive in health, happiness, wealth Linda! In mind, body and spirit! Your contribution to music has been beautiful and cherished to those who deeply appreciate the sonic sounds of music. The upcoming generations who will organically discover you will connect immediately to what the spirit in your voice resonated all those years ago. “Time” holds NO BOUNDS to the authenticity of the individual who sings from the “Heart”. Godspeed Linda!
