The Behringer is amazing. Josh from JHS shot it out with an original Japanese Tube Screamer. And it sounded if not exactly the same, incredibly close. It sounded exactly the same to me. And I use the Behringer and it works so awesome.

I know, they almost feel naughty if music shops can’t make any money off them. But I built a very good board for very little money. And I guess then it kickstarts wanting better quality, or knowing you really like a certain effect and seeking out a better example.

Agreed. If someone is looking for a tube screamer that is either cheaper, smaller...whatever, I don't see any reason to not go w/ that one. It's funny how we spend all this money to get pedals that look different from the original but at the same time want it to sound like the original. The Mini is obviously not the original but it checks most of the boxes for why you might not want to buy an 808.

  • @RogerThat902

Great video. I think the mini tube screamer actually scratches the itch for most of the reasons folks wouldn't buy the flagship. I don't see a ton of reason to not get that if you want to emulate the original (of course some have extra features and that's a good reason). So I'd be a little more interested in seeing different flavors of tubescreamers out there. Example being the plumes...that was supposedly inspired by the tubescreamer. To me, it doesn't sound like a screamer but is almost a hat tip to the scramer and that's why I find it interesting. Would love to see shootouts w/ examples of that kind of thing. It's also a reason someone should buy new "screamers" because a lot of these really are just the same thing packaged differently. I'd be willing to bet you could get two identical 808s and convince people that we hear differences (which we might because of component differences that develop). So for me, I'd love to see different takes on the classic that don't try to do the classic as well as the classic. It's rather amusing to me that we guitar players do anything to avoid buying the classic when they are available but then want the different pedal to sound like the classic...and exactly like it! lol

It's a TS. Such a simple circuit. It's really just a matter of identifying whether you prefer the 808 vs ts9 vs ts10, but honestly, after owning roughly a dozen various ones from cheapest of the cheap to original to expensive af, I now just use a Mosky, cheap little mini chinese that makes great clones (basically what Mooer was before they started charging triple the price) and find it just as good as any other I've used. I do kind of want a Moxie though just for a nice ts10 clone and the voice switch, especially since I never really use the TS as a main overdrive, but it's in front of all my other overdrives and stacks beautifully with them (it sounds great w/ my klon(e), Hampstead Odyssey, and BB preamp. Have a Timmy on the way, too, so we'll see how it plays with that. Can never have too many overdrive/dirt pedals :)

Great playing from Pete (I love the nod to Who Knows!) and, honestly, great tones out of all of the pedals! The Behringer sounds crazily good for £20, but I'd probably go for the Electro Harmonix for its metal case (I use the EH Glove and it's an excellent OD and built like a proverbial brick outhouse). That said, you could break 3 of the Behringers and still come away with a fiver compared with the cost of an East River! That's just bonkers!

I am not a Tube Screamer fan at all, but that Wampler Moxie and Halcyon sound the best to me. But every TS pedal seems to have this issue where the sweet spot is very small. If the gain is too high, it loses definition, and if it’s too low it loses the sparkle. It’s a very small window for me to get them sounding the way I want. Which is probably why I usually go with a Blues Breaker or Dumble ODS style pedal instead. Those tend to have a much wider window of useful tones to my ears usually.

the halcyon's sweet spot is when the dry knob is turned up, not at all emulating an 808 with no dry signal. also with the adaptive setting turned on, the halcyon really shines. i agree it doesn't sound great 100% wet and non-adaptive mode.

Lee and Pete came into right conclusion here. They all sound pretty much the same. I can’t even tell the difference between TS9 and 808, if I tweak them a while they sound pretty much the same. Back in the day I chose TS9 over 808 just because I liked the switch better.

The one I like is the Wampler which is actually based on a ts10 which SRV used for the last 2 years he was alive.I like it because it has noticeably more bite and a grit none of the others have.

As a sunset owner who has A/B'd it myself, I can tell the sunset apart. It's got so much good about it but there is one subtle quality on the sunset that I don't like and I can hear it here. It's like this slightly weird attack when the input goes from silent to hitting a note. And it's like it has slightly less dynamics than the others or something. My Boss GT1000 did the same thing so I think it's just the digital conversion. I only notice it when the guitar is isolated like it is here. Other than that, the sunset is perfect. But sometimes It is such a struggle for me to get over that tiny flaw.

yup, they're such simple circuits (all TS variations, 808, ts9 and ts10), that there's no reason to spend a bundle on any pedal though. Just identify which of the 3 circuits you prefer and get one. The Mosky Mini Screamer is an exact clone with the JRC4558 and is never more than $30 new

I have the Behringer. Soon after i bought it, i acquired the Maxon-the fancy Tamura Mod Anniversary version that was supposed to use all the old components from the original. Well, i could not tell the two pedals apart. So i sold the Maxon.... I still have the Behringer, but did not like looking at it amongst all the high-end pedals on my board, so i eventually convinced myself to get the Kingtone Duellist, but i have to say, even after having subsequently bought/tried the Ibanez TS808 reissue and a Green Rhino-they all sound the same. I only kept the Kingtone because the toggles make it easy to just quickly get a usable alternate tone if i switch guitars or amp profiles (Kemper). But, if i were advising someone, and they weren't gigging, i'd tell them to get the Behringer (or the Joyo Vintage Overdrive) and put the savings into a Vemuram.

@@CentaurusRelax314 Yeah, it's the most famous pedal ever. I would imagine that these companies know they will get roasted if it's not on the money, no matter what they use. At this point, as they say in the video, it's about extra features/the look. If we are being honest, a lot of these pedals are selling exclusivity through price and/or design. It's not the sound for most of these things. And even if the differences are there, there is no way anyone would notice in a "real" situation. It's truly amazing how the pedal industry has created major brands around at best minor differences.
