Here's Random Guitar plugged into an ever changing parade of overdrives, into one of like 20 amps, with one of 6 gorillion non standard mics, with a rack of effects going on the DAW.. Super strat or LP/SG/V, Marshall &/or Mesa, fuck off with the overdrive & use an SM57. Give me a point of comparison I can work with.

    It drives me mad how everyone just quickly glosses over the SD-1 and shrugs it off as being "nothing special." It's simply one of the best and most reliable overdrives out there and it works great with any combination of guitar/amp. It gets no respect merely because it doesn't cost an arm, and it's been around forever.

    The most criminally underrated Boss pedal, its cheap and extremely reliable with awesome tones, it’s a little brighter than an Ibanez Screamer but if you scoop the tone you can achieve the same warmth with ease. Not to mention the lineup of incredible guitarists who have achieved their most iconic tones with it. If I could have one pedal on my board it would be the SD-1

    I buy and sell loads of amps and never keep them. Still have my Rectifier because the SD-1 gives it that mid notch that opens it up. Criminal how he glossed over it like it didn't sound better than some of the shite he dialled in with other pedals

  • @TruthSurge
    @TruthSurge3 жыл бұрын

    Too much distortion will just muddy the rhythms and you lose that punch so there's a sweet spot somewhere so your mutes sound chunky and pumpy but not sloppy. The ones that retained the mids/bass sounded nice and fat.

    That's the trick. Most guys just dial up the gain to max, but it makes riffs so much clearer and tighter with the gain rolled off a bit... Personally I want my amp (Laney Ironheart) to deliver that much gain on its own, instead of half on a pedal and half from the amp. Keeps things simpler and all-tube too.

  • @guitarzan2979

    @guitarzan2979

    I thought the whole idea of using an OD in front of your amp was to boost it with the drive of the pedal on zero, the volume on 10 and the tone 1/2 to 3/4 or to personal taste. That’s the way Ola had the TS9 it looked like to me, same as I set my TS9. Unless you are referring to the amp settings, then true you don’t want the gain dimed unless you’re a newbie and don’t know any better. I have experimented with the drive knob on the OD pedal a little bit though, and got some good tones like with my Dark Terror.

    The Boss SD-1 stock version deserves to be in this test and IMHO beats more expensive pedals. I don´t know why you pass over it, the waza model without dig it a little bit more, it has the same simplicity as Ts9 and Ts808 (three f**kn buttons!!), and I don´t agree, Boss SD-1 has something special man. In my minimal experience, the overdrive that I like the most with rectifiers and pretty much with any amp is the MXR GT-OD. It's kinda like a hybrid between the SD-1 and the TS9 and it has made wonders for me. In fact, it's the only overdrive that I've used for the past 10 years.

    Ola, I have been using a RAT as a boost similar to how you would use a tube screamer. Distortion low, level all the way up and filter to taste. It's so kickass. It gives the amp a little bit of a chewy feel that I love. It would be cool to see how you like it. Most people use a RAT as an all out distortion/fuzz, but at low distortion settings it makes for a killer boost into high gain amps.

    Meshuggah used the Integrated Preamp, rather than the Line Driver. The circuit is pretty much just a Baxandall high and low shelf, so when the "bass" knob is turned down, the high Q value creates a hump above the centre frequency. So it's lowered lows and boosted mids, very simple and effective.

    Sd-1 all the way. I love the rasp it introduces, distorted tones sound so good when they are also kind of “ugly” and to me that’s why the sd-1 always shines. It’s a world class overdrive that you can buy used all day for $40-50. At some point you just gotta realize no crowd is gonna be able to tell any difference between any of these pedals in a live mix. Your hands and ability to eq your amp will be so much more important.

    The Dual Rec was my first love back in the early 90's (I really appreciate the DR's clean tones as well for that matter), and I still love it. But then I discovered the Orange Thunderverb and it's been my amp of choice ever since. Funny, I'm not a huge fan of the Orange sound in general, but there's something SO fucking perfect about the Thunderverb. Similar to the single-knob functionality of the 33 pedal here, the Thunderverb's second channel only has a single "shape" knob (along with a volume & a gain). Beautifully simplistic, & paired with a tube screamer it chugs like a mf! I don't think I'd have ever taken notice of the Thunderverb if it weren't for Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan. The amazing, gritty tones on the "Deliverance", "Wiseblood", & "Into the Arms of God" albums just blew my head off, and when I saw them live Pepper's Thunderverb together with Woody's Dual Rectifier just sounded fucking stellar. I'd love to see Ola's take on the Thunderverb. It gets overlooked a lot, but lemme tell you it's a real workhorse!! 💪 Ever since that concert I've been panning a DR to one side and a TVerb to the other with pretty cool results. For me they compliment each other perfectly. If anyone wants to try them out together without breaking the bank Amplitube even has really decent models of both.

    This is a great video concept. Very helpful! Would love to see a Klon type circuit used as a boost/OD for metal. I haven’t seen many try it and I honestly don’t know why. Hump frequency is slightly higher than the TS, so it seems like it would be good especially for a bottom heavy amp. Kind of halfway between a TS and a Treble Booster.

    Ola, your test format is as close to perfect as any tester: a looper so the test signal is consistent across all pedals. This removes the tester himself from the experiment. I have suggested it to many reviewers. Thank you very much.

    I have a Boss multi effect that has the Boss OD-1 and also the the TS 808 modelled in there. Now I know modelling isn't spot on and the SD sounds a bit different than the OD but the OD sounds so much better than the TS. It has more of a beefy bark to it. I started using the 808 but accidentally switched the knob to the OD-1 and I was totally caught by surprise.

    I use a OCD Overdrive Pedal with my Producers Peavey XXX in the studio. I tried a TS9, a Boss Overdrive, a Digitech Overdrive, and many more Overdrive Pedals after my Producer got his Peavey XXX, and the OCD Overdrive too my ear's, had the clearest tone, but it still added more gain, and gave the XXX more bottom end and grit. I liked the TS9, but it really scoops the mids of a XXX Amp. Guess I'm the odd one out, because my favorite overdrive or boost pedal, is one you don't have Ola. Take Care Man. Keep Chuggin.🤘🏻🤘🏻
