Just to let everyone know.Your tub spout may have a set screw. That's located at the bottom of the spout, unlike mine. So make sure to look to see if you have one! If so, remove the set screw. Then, follow the video.

Mine has a set screw, and I noticed my pipe doesn’t have any threads?? Is that a problem? Or do I just use the tape and tighten the spout back on with the screw?

@@roundedrob1483 Thank you for asking. I FIXED IT!!!!! WOOOOOHOOOOOO.... diverter was out of commission 1.5 years. That said, I now have a new issue. Where the shower head connects to the wall [not "builder grade", bought detachable[?] style when son was infant], is a tiny bit leaky dripping down the hose thing. [Airhead woman speak] I attempted to tighten it & it seems it's as good as it can get without over-tightening & causing a major issue. Seeing my "War & Peace" length answer, are you regretting you asked? Lmfao, 😆 half kidding. Tiffany

Such a helpful video. Our diverter really needed a new rubber gasket, but the one in the new Danco package was not thick enough. I hacked the problem by cutting off the lip of the old one & inserting it first, to give more height. It's still a little too thick, so I'll be on the look out for a slightly thinner one in my home-supply. Really appreciate the step-by-step. I enlisted the help of my 20-year-old son, who enjoyed learning the ins & outs of the project. He hasn't had much experience in the fix-it arena, so this was great! Video is not too long - easy & quick to follow!

CRAP! Your video was so helpful. Bought the parts on Amazon (super cheap, for once!). Your instructions were perfect! Got the old unit pulled off, parts came in, got everything ready to go. Even followed your practice of sanding down the surface to make the slider work better. Got my tape ready to reinstall the spout and BAM... Stripped it. One turn too many. Seems while the spout itself is solid, the parts inside are cheap plastic and snapped like a twig. Back to Amazon to buy a spout. Rinse, repeat... But, your steps and video were super helpful. Normally this would have cost me a visit from a plumber, so thank you Sir!! 👍👍

I broke mine, texted my carpenter dad, my landlord, and my plumber buddy and then I was like lemme see if KZread had anything to say. I didnt need to remove the whole spigot. I just put the diverter back in place, put the stem in the top, and kinda felt for it to get in place and now it works! The stem was bent causing us to have to use great force to pull it up. That's how I yanked it out by mistake. Took a hammer, straightened it out a little, and now she's a bit smoother when going up and down. Thank you!

You don't need to remove the whole spout to fix it. Most of the time you can just remove the plastic gate and rubber seal. Simply reach under the open end of the spout, open up the gate's two plastic side clips a little bit while also pulling up on the knob. Everything should come apart easily when you do this. Then clean the inner flat metal surface of the spout with a metal file (even a regular fingernail emery file will work too). To reinstall everything you do the reverse. If it's hard for you do see what you are doing, just lie down in the tub on your back with you head facing the spout. It takes less than 5 minutes to fix it, and you don't have to worry about not tightening/sealing up the main copper water supply pipe from leaking.

Thank you for posting this video as I just moved into this house in the mountains and there's a lot of minerals here and I had to use CLR in the toilet so I'm thinking in this 28-year-old house I know that the owner was not good about cleaning things and I suspect the tub spigot could be clogged up and corroded. I pulled a little knob up and half the hot water is going down the drain! And my son put a brand new shower head on because before we moved in some vagabonds came in here and stole our bathroom fixtures like the shower head and the medicine cabinet and they didn't touch the faucet though. For all I know they may have tried to. I'm going to remove the shower spigot and see if there's corroded parts which I know that the nice new looking faucet in the kitchen already had a completely rusted out aerator. Thank you very much. And here I thought I was going to have to get into the wall or something. This looks fairly easy.
