Such a sad story. Being born a girl with controlling parents, life is a misery. If I were her, I wouldn't get married period. Any parents like the parents in this story have high expectation for choosing a spouse for their daughters. They probably want a son-in-law(s), who are rich and have good reputation or fame from the family background and himself. In the past, parents are very judgemental that they will hate any men that they don't consider a good options for their daughters. The parents in the past want a prince charming (rich) and don't want an orphan (poor). Her parents hoped to have the best husband for her, but she got the worst type of husband (a man with multiple wives). In this story, the parents even admit that they want a good husband for her so that is why they forbid her from marrying anyone. All three of her ex-boyfriends are either poor or have bad reputation from their family background. I think her parents also want her to help the chores around the house and the farm.They value their opinions and desires more than her happiness. They don't care if she don't have the one she loves. They only care that they give birth to her, so they still want her around the house and want her to listen to their orders. When she is in old age, her parents finally tell her to go get marry because her parents only care about their face and reputation. They still don't care about her happiness. If her parents have realized that she may have trauma and already depressed (not petty), they should have give her more confidence and happiness. She wants to live in freedom, but they didn't allow her to do even that too. Instead, her parents even force her to go get marry anyone who was even worst than her previous boyfriends. The widower (lucky, she escape) and the soldier husband, who may not be poor, but he already have a two wives already (one dead). This part makes me even more mad. Why would you even go that far though? From my own opinion, she don't deserve to be born as their daughter. Her parents are very selfish and don't love her at all. If I was her, I would regret to be born as their daughter in that lifetime. No wonder, she told her dad to not to be reborn as her son. She even says that she rather died as a motherless mother (no children) and she will go reborn as a new person. This proves that she resent and sad toward her parents until death and the next lifetime because she indirectly stated that she wants nothing to do with them (her current parents).

1 word: Money. Back then and even today, especially those still in Laos, are bonkers over money. They want their daughters to marry rich men, especially if the daughters are good looking so the parents want her to snag a rich husband... even if the husband is already married. Even today, hmong lao parents encourage, sometime force their teenage daughters to marry 65 yo hmong americans. Have you seen videos of the daughter at her boyfriend's house about to get marry and her mother comes and drags her back home saying if her boyfriend has $5,000 to pay off the hmong american then he can have her? I saw at least 2.

It’s sad that the parents did this to her but she should have left with him when he came back for her at the farm. I would have taken the risk if I loved him that much. Some parents raise their children into having such low self esteem. If only she had parents who encouraged her to have confidence she might have been happier.

In my opinion, I think this story have faults on both sides. Her parents are most to blame. If they only disagreed with one boyfriend, then I wouldn't mind and consider that a no issue. But, they refute three boyfriends in a few years span. This proves that they may give birth to her, but they don't love her as a daughter at all. Listen to the story carefully, the parents show love unequal to all the siblings. I don't know about the other brothers and sisters, but she even stated a matter of fact in the story. Remember when she says that she left to go with her third boyfriend, her mom follow and hits them both with a stick and bring her back home. But, how come when her younger sister got kidnapped by her sister's husband? Why didn't her mom go to the house and why didn't the mom hit and bring her younger sister back home? Her mother already say this to her at the farm. I'm not sure if the mother trying to be honest or just mock her at the farm. But, this proves to her that her mother don't love them unequal. If it was her sister, then her mother wouldn't do anything to bring her back. But, if it was her. Then, her mother will stop her love at every opportunity. If the parents going to forbid her to marry anyone of her ex-boyfriends, then the parents should do all this to all her siblings. This is consider love and fair. But, her parents blame that this is her fate, which I call bullshit. The other fault rely on herself. I guess maybe she choose the wrong parents to be born into her current lifetime. And, she probably own her parents debt in the past life. No wonder, she lives with them and grow up until old age. To others, she may look petty and stay single for her whole life to fight against her parents. But, I assume maybe she have trauma and depressed from her love life that she also regrets and resents her parents. Also, she wasn't strong-willed and didn't have high self-esteem from the beginning. She should have follow her hearts and choose the man that she loves from the beginning. Though, the trauma and sadness from losing too many boyfriends may have emdebbed deep in her heart and mind. So, she have fears to move forward in her life. She should consider a psychiatrist or therapist (too sad that none were in that time period) since she becomes a bitter and depressed person with no hope for the future. I guess she takes that sadness to the end until her parents' death. Both of her parents regret their decision and tries to amend their fault to find her a husband, which makes her even more sad cause they force her to marry a widower (not succeed) or a man with multiple wives. They never love her, but they love themselves more than her happiness. Even until death, her parents makes amends to give her money for her funeral. This situation make me think that her parents are a step too late. This part pissed me off more than the money for the funeral. Her father make amends that he will reborn as her son so that she will have a child. I meant.. She was born as your daughter, but you don't give her love and happiness. Why would you want to reborn as her son? To cause her more heartache? No wonder, she tells her dad not to reborn as her son. She already feels remorse, regret, and resentment towards her parents for the way they treated her. She probably doesn't want anything to do with them again. Maybe, she hopes that in her next lifetime, she will find a better mom and dad in the next lifetime, who will finally give her happiness. I just hope that whoever this woman is, I hope she finds better parents who will love her more and give her happiness. If she stays until old age, then she probably lost her soulmate when her parents try to stop her to get married. I got pissed that she only marry her husband to please her parents from saving face and to prevent her dad from committing suicide. This proves that the parents and herself are toxic against each other. I hope she find her soulmate in the next lifetime so she will live blissfully with her soulmate until death.
