    I don't have to imagine. Twice this happened to me. Once, I was walking with my roommate's family and she stopped to tie her shoe. We all stopped, turned to walk back to her, and as we reached her, a glass widow crashed on the sidewalk, where we would have been , had she not stopped. #2 Friends and I were walking to a diner, but I stopped them, because I wanted to return a Movie, before going in. We always talk forever, so I figure the Rental place would be closed by the time we left. Everyone stopped to argue with me. The Movie shop was just across the street, so we all decided to go. Just as we were crossing the street, a FWAP! just in front of the Diner. It was a window washer who's line was not connected properly. The guy fell 13 stories, and crushed like a beer can, landing feet first.

The homage to Spinal Tap, a little Pythonesque, but the modern day management philosophy applied to the barbarism of the day, gets me every time. Mushroom testing and Yarl Vargs open and honest team building exercise, with his not so subtle mangers decision oof! Too many to compliment them all.

    There was a similar custom from japan, here elderly parents would go into the mountain to die, so as not to be a burden on their children. There's a story where the aged mother of a poor farmer asks him to take her into the mountains to die. Despite his reluctance, she asks him to do it, not wanting to be a burden on him since they're poor. So he carries her on his back and walks into the mountain. Finally, they reach a clearing where he sets her down, and she asks him to leave. Turning around, he sees broken things littering the ground. The old lady tells him that she was breaking twigs the whole way and leaving a trail, so that he would be able to find his way back. The young man is so moved by this he starts crying and takes her back home, and takes care of her for the rest of her days. It's kinda wholesome but also dark. It makes me wonder if this rituals came about as a response to hard times, and maybe such stories were created to encourage people to not do it. Maybe this is why some religions and cultures have special social roles, like religious roles, which can only be performed by old people, so they don't feel useless.

  • @user-th3bo2yp1t

    @user-th3bo2yp1t

    Taking care of elderly is quite an economic burden nowadays. Imagine times were just having enough food even for the non elderly was not a trivial matter, perhaps a bad season away. Famines were a thing. Not only you have to feed them, but also devote labour that could be used farming gathering or hunting. Might even be another vector for disease. Aging is a horrible phenomenon. Imagine having the body of a 25 year old till you're 80 and then just drop dead. Sounds like a better deal than aging.

I then see this in the UK some years ago and found it hilarious, not sure how they achieved it in English, but, brilliant. I was reacting on things that my fellow English mates wouldn't get. The start of episode 2 was very funny. Filmed scenes on set in Norwegian first then English right after if i recall correctly.

    That is pretty bold statement, especially about this show. It is one great scene followed by even better scene, which is suddenly replaced by absurd and funny scene and that one changes in another funny scene. Even parts which seem weak in this show are as good as best scenes from other shows. And I think that the best one is when Orm jumps to attack. And disappears under water.

    First, ättestupa is most probably a myth and never existed (but that is alright, since it makes for a humorous scene). Second, if it did exist, the belief was not that you would go to Valhalla afterwards, but to Helheim, a much less alluring place. So he should have shouted: "To Helheim!".

    I'd say that it's highly possible people did do it. But it was less likely just the old, but more accurately, the old and crippled. The kind of people who could barely do anything without help and required constant care. Of course, most of those people probably died before they could even be in a position to perform it. But I'd say the few who could still barely walk, and were extremely old, with few family resources, were the most likely candidates to carry it out.
