TTC Buses at Warden Station

Warden Station, the second eastern terminus of the Bloor-Danforth Subway, from its opening in 1968 until the extension to Kennedy in 1980, has outgrown the capacity of its unique bus terminal. With growth in the areas of Toronto both to the north and the south of the station, the terminal could originally serve the entirety of the east end of the city, but the multiple platforms are no longer sufficient for the level of bus traffic at the station. Additionally, modern accessibility requirements are impossible to meet with the current design, so a project to modernize the station is underway. At the time of recording in September 2023, Birchmount and McNicoll Divisions were supplying Nova Bus LFS buses to many of the routes at Warden, while Malvern supplied Nova Bus LFS HEV buses. This bus and a number of others had to loop around the terminal because of the single lane bus platforms. Since buses have to pull into a platform to unload upon arrival, it means some buses have to pull out after unloading, then drive around to move out of the way if another bus is supposed to depart sooner. Some platforms have more than one route, so this is not an exact science. Of course this contributes to the need for the modernization of which the first steps are underway.

I have a question for warden express, for morning and evening they have express service but in mid day they don’t, for example if warden express bus has time end on noon, will the bus end up in Mcnicol division for not in service or they change to 968 to 68 warden?

I've been informed that currently, the 968 buses return to the garage when the 968 stops running. There are other routes where buses do trips on both the express and local version, but the 68 and 968 are operated separately.

Thanks for highlighting our station! Do you have a reference for where you got the Warden "has outgrown the capacity of its unique bus terminal"? It's our understanding that the rebuild is for accessibility reasons only and not to increase the bus capacity.

Glad you've enjoyed the highlight. Accessibility to 2023 standards is essentially impossible with the existing bus terminal design, so I agree that that is the primary reason for the upcoming rebuild. As for bus capacity, the existing design makes it difficult for buses to lay over without exiting to the street and re entering the terminal. For example, if the highest frequency bus route at opening was 10 minutes, and buses on that route had an 8 minute recovery time, a bus could arrive, drop off its passengers, then lay over for 8 minutes before loading and departing. The next bus would still be 2 minutes away. In 2023, let's say we have a 4 minute frequency with a 6 minute recovery time, the first bus arrives, unloads passengers and begins its 6 minute layover. 4 minutes later, the next bus arrives, but the operator of the first bus is still in the washroom. The second bus cannot pull in to its correct platform to unload passengers. If lucky, another platform will be free, so the passengers can be unloaded at the "wrong" platform, but then the bus has to exit to Warden Avenue, make the turn onto St Clair Avenue and then into the bus terminal again, hopefully to be able to pull in to the correct platform. Multiply this issue when platforms are shared between multiple bus routes, express routes, and in the event of collision or breakdown the station would be a mess for a considerable amount of time.
