I love the commercial, it is great to see companies support a secular/atheist view, i'd love to see other companies hop on the bandwagon. As always, awesome job Seth!!

Scientology is in decline. That is good for our society and for the world at large.

When I read L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi books, he wasn't a GREAT sci-fi author, but he also wasn't stupid. I can't help but always think that perhaps Scientology was his joke on society.

It absolutely was his joke on his followers. He wasn't even that good of a writer (IMO) but considered himself a genius. He said most people were intellectually beneath him and in an interview once said that you can start a religion telling people there are aliens living in their blood and they will be stupid enough to believe it and pay you for the privilege. I guess in this case he was right.

Another reason all religions need to be investigated, regulated, monitored and taxed!

Old Man from Scene Twenty Four And I meant Scientology and LDS should not even be counted as such and just be dealt with as particularily boring entertainment parks with large money laundering schemes attached. The rest may be looked at critically if they justify a tax exemption, at least those two (probably more, i do not know all denominations worldwide) should not even qualify due to obvious fraudulent origins. But well.. US courts do believe in the existense and legal importance of something like "sincerely held beliefs"... so that's never going to happen.

Wish I could return in a hundred years to see how many of these religious cults have imploded. Thank internet for providing access to truth and reality.

Knew a youth friend that went to the States with his brother, early teens. Their family had this slightly awkward "IT-nerd" disposition, an older sister and brother. When the youngest brothers came back, they converted all but the older sister, got up and just left. Abandoned the sister. A true thing would not work like that; it would speak volumes and be inclusive. This was patently pathetic, sad.

Jena Miscavage-Hill said in her book that she signed her 'billion year contract' when she was eight yrs old.

In the 1950s my father got a magazine that was put together by Ron L Hubbard. There were articles but it was full of letters from people who said since I have been tithing 10% of my earnings to the Church my income has increased by 100%. Scientology is all about money.

In my search for some religion I could believe in, I read about half of Dianetics, then, I threw it in the trash because I didn’t think it should be read by anyone. I wasn’t going to donate it to my local library.

+Hollis Evon Ramsey Their clingyness alone qualifies for it. They sometimes even sue people that try to leave and it usually destroys your whole social life if you do leave as you tended to only have friends left that also are scientologists, so it should not be in doubt. One of the few things i'm happy about in my own homecountry of Germany is that we did not allow Scientology the claim to being a church and instead tax them as a for profit company :D If only the US would follow us in that for once!

So let's say somebody gets out of the church and then says something negative about them, they are in danger?

ALWAYS enjoy your show! About the Nature Bars. . . If that helps make it possible for you to do your shows, you can talk about them till the proverbial cows come home. People are doing shit while they listen to you. Let them make a god damn phone call or go out and get the mail. Actually, by forcing people to postpone the 'instant gratification' of hearing your velvet voice of reason, you are helping them be better people. And anyone who wants to complain can just write a check for the income you need to be able to do this and stop complaining. Sending a 'puppy wag' your way!

Around the 1 hour mark. Scientologists honestly sound like little gremlins, such wierd behaviour.

Amazing podcast this time. After the initial interview I wanted to switch videos, thinking it was the end of the cast (I listen while working) and realized it was only half way. Second half? Just as good. Not that I normally have something to complain about, but this is certainly one of your better ones. For some reason you also sound more engaged then you have been in last few casts. Brilliant and interesting show. Scientology sounds a lot like islam in many regards... especially with the bullying.

I'm listening to this show out of order but wow this is cool. I love the topics and the guests.

I'm surprised they didn't go after Donald Trump. He's rich and definitely full of himself.

The fact that people claim scientology helped them be cured of addiction should show what utter nonsense our current concepts about addiction are. Seth asks the question of whether or not L. Ron believed his own nonsense. I think that question is a lot more complex than just yes or no. I think many religious people often believe and don't believe at the same time. That sounds contradictory, but can you really believe that someone came back from the dead? Can you believe that all your problems are thetans or sins or whatever, and that someone can cure you of this? I think people like Hubbard, Jim Jones, Alan John Miller, etc. really do believe their own bullshit at least part of the time. This is why cults are so insular. You have to be around people who reinforce these views to take them seriously. Anyone who has ever been in a discussion with a theist and gotten the better of them has seen the reaction to reality be forced into someone's walled garden. They immediately become defensive and accuse you of intolerance. Tolerance of stupidity is not a virtue. Engrams = scientology's equivalent to Sin? A cult, and a religion are the same things. * “**_Every_** therapy produces enthusiastic testimonials because of the justification-of-effort effect. Anyone who invests time and money and effort in a therapy will say it helped."* This is the explanation for every 12 step therapy ever. When I hear people talk about scientology, I am struck with two comparisons. On the one side I see how much scientology is just like religion and wonder how the religious can't see the comparisons. On the other side I see so many similarities between it and 12 step addiction programs, (which scientology tried to take over at one point due to how lucrative they are) and don't understand how _everyone_ can't see the similarities. 12 step programs are the most egregious violations of church/state separation that we have in the US and _atheists_ defend them.

Neil is such a boss, awesome voice, passion and brain, I seen him on YT only unfortunately and on TV the Universe series, oh.. and also in StarGate Atlantis ! I wish I could meet him in person.

I have had 2 brushes with Scientology: - One friend was a skeptic and had told me the story of how L.Ron Hubbard was dared to create a religion. - Another friend was a fairly high-up member of the L.A. church. He had told me that in the '70s, he had given the church $250K and I asked him why, he simply replied "because I could afford to at the time". Unfortunately, these 2 friends never had the opportunity to sit down and discuss this topic. They are both deceased now (though the wife of the scientologist is still alive). It would have been a great discussion!

I love rocks and minerals and I have a very small collection. Years ago while drinking coffee in a donut shop I was talking to someone about them. Some lady entered the conversation and was talking about the rocks having special powers and spiritual power. I said "their fucking rocks". She went on talking about her religion, possibly Scientology, and that's where her information came from. When I just shook my head and laughed, she blew up and called me a bunch of names and left. What a joke.

I will say this. Scientology helped me, but not as intended. When this was in the new almost everyday back in the mid 2000's I took it upon myself to look into it. Mostly cause I had no idea what it was. And what I found was so much crazy! I couldn't believe someone would believe it. I compiled papers and even presented them to my parents. They thought I was joining. I said I would never do something like that. Which had put a spark in my mind that of all the things I had to do in Catholicism. From then I I dived into every religion, any facts or history I could find that would support such clams. One of them had to be right. 10 years later I've become an open atheists.

The reference they allude to about LRH thinking of creating a religion was said in the company of Harlan Ellison. He admitted as much - to Harlan Ellison. who told Robin Williams and they had a good laugh about it - though not necessarily a happy laugh. The video/audio of this can be found if you look.

Great show! At first I thought I'd be kind of board not having a video to watch along with it, but the content and subject was so interesting and your voice so nice I didn't even notice. So cool you got to meet Neil DeGrasse Tyson, I have a brain crush on him, he has this wonderful way of making what he talks about relatable and easy for everyone to understand, great for kids!

This is some great stuff. I wish I heard more about Scientology from the atheist community. They may not be that big, but they're fascinating.

This would make a great movie ... maybe they could get someone like ... Tom Cruise to star in it??

I am not so sure about Scientology being a small organization. I live in Denmark and figured out by the "I Love Hubbard" T-shirts that just down my street I have a Scientology center/church with people coming in every day with big sightseeing like busses. 2 everyday. Has to be a pretty big organization for thaht to happen in a small country like Denmark but I dont know I guess.

Hi Mario, I just looked it up. Scientology apparently have there European headquarts just down the street lol. No wonder they are bringing them in in busses. Yes, we are mostly atheist luckily but not here on my street :D

I sure hope so. They wear a uniform making it really easy to tell who they are. White shirt and black pants and dark shoes. I once walked around the corner with sort of the same look as them just when their bus arrived and they all seemed to think I was one of them lol. that is the only time I have had eye contact with one of them. I was a little tempted to sneak on the bus just to see what would happen and where they were going lol.

They probably advertise to see how much it costs them so they can gauge how many are watching within a certain timeframe and get metrics on their pushback. I’m sure they know they won’t get recruits from people watching this video, so there has to be an ulterior motive.

Hey Seth, what's wrong with the sound?

I've been watching your podcast for a few months and I really appreciate the work the you do and have been waiting for you to touch on Scientology. I know a lot about this religion as some in my family practice it and I always wanted to know the a skeptics view on it. I greatly appreciated the people you had on your show but I feel there was so much more that could have been discussed that it is so wrong about the religion that it only scratched the surfaced I feel like they talked and criticized more their practices than the actual claims. They have so many claims that are so far fetched like your consciousness leaving your body and being able to perceive things around, hear, see smell etc. Alien bases on Mars, Past Lives and the ability to recall them, the ability to read thoughts with the e-meter, influence matter with pure thought, cure all kinds of disease (they don't claim this directly but indirectly do) such as: Dementia, Psychosis, ADHD, being able to cure all sort of drug addictions, homosexuality and all sorts of "sexual aberrations" claims. Also, it never gets questioned what methods Hubbard used to reach his conclusions as he obviously did not use the scientific method or if he did he never showed it.

Who else noticed the humming of the background

In a lot of ways the practices of the Scientology religion is similar to Jehovah’s Witnesses particularly around shining family members who lead the church or in this case the organization.

I've been so spoiled with the great audio that you provide in your videos and podcasts. What happened? You sound like you are down a well.
