TSL Interviews Belinda Noonan
Спорт
Belinda Noonan recently delighted viewers with her commentary on the world feed of the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships with partner Mark Hanretty. Belinda has been a figure skating commentator at every Olympic Winter Games since 1998 and has provided commentary for the Olympic Broadcast Service in 2014, 2018 and 2022. In addition to her broadcast work, she is a former Australian Champion in women's and pair skating, an international medalist, and a coach at the World Championships and Olympic Games.
I had a chance to chat with Belinda about her views on figure skating commentary, her views on the sport, how figure skating can expand around the globe and what she likes and doesn't like about the current rules.

Honest and fair commentary with no national bias, she's the best.
Belinda is a gift to figure skating. Her commentating at Worlds was perfection- she knew each skater's strengths, knew how to fairly commentate each program without overselling a skater's program or harshly criticizing a skater and she knew how to look at a skater's performance with a judging panel lens. The care and time she took to really know each of the 182 athletes as people is one of the points that stood out to me in this interview and one of the reasons why I think her commentating of Worlds was really remarkable. Thank you Belinda and thank you Dave for posting this interview! Skating needs more Belindas!

As for jumps, my biggest pet peeve is when a skater doing a toe jump, takes off from the whole blade, effectively turning the lutz and flip into loop jumps.

Did you see Jason spin in both directions at the WTT today? I didn't realise he had that talent. Jason has the thing you cannot teach. He engages the audience, the judges and the world (and Kaori is getting better at this) from the moment he gets on the ice. It's not a talent that can be taught or learned, it's just something that is there. The same thing that John Curry and to perhaps a lesser extent Robin Cousins (although he too is masterful).

Wow, what an interview! It‘s so important to have pros like Belinda or Mark as commentators in a sport that‘s as nuanced as Figure Skating. They bring so much knowledge to the viewer and help to guide our eyes and understanding of what we see. In my opinion they matter lot in whether this sport is accessible and interesting as a competition for all kinds of viewers but especially for those who would be lost without commentary (or bad commentary that doesn‘t explain well what‘s happening).

I cannot believe Belinda used to train with Robin Cousins! I mean, I can believe it, but I'm just suuuuuper jealous. That would be something I would invent time travel for. Just to be able to train with him! What an incredible teenager life she lived and even now, she's truly my favorite commentator for figure skating. She's just a brilliant woman.
I love her voice it’s so comforting to hear while watching- you can tell she loves skating

I watched figure skating for many years and I didn’t realize that Belinda commented so many events. I guess I took it for granted in the past. Belinda is brilliant and now she is one of my favorite people on FS. I love how she speaks about skaters and personalities. It’s so true that every skater competes at different levels and not only about top 10. As a viewer, I really appreciate Belinda’s work and passion for sport! ❤❤❤
Great interview! If the ISU has a modicum of sense they will be calling Belinda to commentate regularly next season, and especially at Worlds.

Straight away we know she did her homework as she still remembers the exact number of athletes competing in Saitama. So pleased that she singled out Jari Kessler, because her commentary on his short programme was my highlight of the Worlds. Even though she described the wonderful Angela by the Lumineers as ‘elevator music.’

@TheSkatingLesson

I’m so glad Belinda was interviewed. She is much better at commentating than Ted. The difference was notable at WTT. Ted would read from script and would get confused and mix up the skaters. Which shows he isn’t even a fan of skating. Because I would never be confused due to knowing who the skaters are. Belinda, is a true fan. 1) Loved her insight of what goes on, in practice. Who had good run through, etc 2) She calls out improper technique and is not afraid to say it (Morisi Quads) 3) She doesn’t give fake, useless commentary like Ted, where everyone is great. She calls it, as she sees it. I’m able to differentiate more between what skaters need to work on, thanks to Belinda commentary 4) She gets emotional when skaters skate with passion and their hearts out. Mens free skate final group at Worlds was amazing and listening to Belinda get carried away by the skates was refreshing… I loved her. I can’t wait to listen to this interview later on tonight.

This was a great interview, thanks Dave! I have enjoyed Belinda’s Olympic commentary for years and absolutely loved her at the world championships this year. So refreshing to have someone just call a spade a spade haha without being malicious or dramatic. I loved hearing about the skaters she enjoys too - Kaori and Jason are by far my favourites at the moment! I watch them over and over, the speed, flow and cohesiveness of the skating is beats quads any day. On an exciting personal note, we are having Kurt and Alissa come to Australia to do a camp in a few month!! So exciting!

She's wonderful! Glad she spotted Jari Kessler and his phenomenal skating instead of someone who throws a bunch of quads with no skating skills in a lame program... Her answer to what is her pet peeve in figure skating was priceless :) Too bad you didn't ask her about her Sochi-2014 experience because she seemed to be genuinely shocked that Yuna Kim didn't retain her Olympic Champion title. I remember strumbling upon Brenda during one of the last Olympics live feeds. Truth.
"I'm not arms flinging fan because they are not attached to the ice" lmaooo I spilled my tea hearing that. What a queen Skaters need to stop doing mindless arms flinging and high kicks that are not choreographed to the music. Same with pairs and dance doing mini lifts cause they can't do harder steps and turns. It's the same with hairography in dance where audiences focus drawn to nonsensical instead of the important things where in FS is the skating itself.
