Just a note: When the arborist bolted my tree together, he sprayed some sort of tar sealer into the crack on both sides, and then left the can with me. He said this would seal it up to keep the insects out till the bark grows over and heals it. I recoated it the second year and by the third year it was completely healed. That was at least 15 years ago and it is still a healthy tree. I think your tree will be fine.

Oh, I was just commenting about insects! I wondered if it would be vulnerable? I'm so glad you posted this, I hope they see it and find out what to use! Is it too late to use it now that it's already bolted together? This is just fascinating to me! Thanks Jim!😊

I would not advise of an such wound dressings as this is an outdated practice. In Urban Forestry, you learn that such products can prevent drying and encourage fungal growth, can interfere with wound wood or callus tissue, inhibits compartmentalization, and possibly serve as a food source for pathogens. The truth is, trees can repair these wounds on their own just fine without these products and is often done for aesthetic reasons.

GREAT JOB GUYS!!! We did this EXACT thing to our tree 15 years ago, and it is STILL HOLDING beautifully!! I think y'all did everything exactly right. The only thing now - gotta keep water out of the split until it can grow over. Since you don't have much rain, that might not be a big job! But we put a tiny cover over the top of the split to keep the rain out. Apparently, it worked for us! AND - what FANTASTIC camera work on this job! I really liked watching the split come back together!!! Thanks for yet ANOTHER Great Video! ♡♡♡

Love your attitude about try to make the best out of bad situations! ❤️ SO glad you could save that beautiful tree!!! (I'm not trying to argue with Aaron, but a person would most likely take $2 million if it was offered for a tree, however a person couldn't buy a mature tree that is comfortable in it's soil and growing space to replace the one like you have for any price, so in that way, mature trees are priceless! 🌳❤️🌲❤️🌳️) It was so cool to see the tree pulled together!!! The final result was beautiful and well done! I enjoyed looking at that whole area. SO beautiful! The matching containers along your driveway are looking GREAT. Love all of the fancy editing.

My dad did this probably 40 years ago because us kids loved to climb trees. We broke 2 branches off a small maple and split the tree. He just used a come along, chains and burap bags to protect trunk. He used roofing tar to cover broken branch wounds and we had to paint the split with paint brushes with tar. We never climbed smaller trees ever again. That tree is huge and healthy now. He removed come along like 4 years later when tree got bigger.

So glad you decided to try and save your tree! I was able to save my purple plum that I absolutely loved. A storm took it completely out of the ground. I had an arborist come and he said just throw it away because it would die. Boy was he wrong! Put it right back up in the ground (was super heavy) and we staked it up. It lived another 14 yrs until another storm came and twisted it in half at the football. Then...I cried. I'm super impressed with the job you two did! I hope you have many more years of enjoying your beautiful tree! I'm in the process of planting my own Honey Locust and hope it looks as lovely as yours! Thanks so much for sharing!

Great job on the fix! Few quick tips: 1.) Noticed Aaron had to cut ends again after initially hammering the bolt into the tree because the threads got damaged. If you thread a nut on and leave it at the very end of the rod, it helps avoid this. 2.) Trees don't "heal" in the way we typically think. They compartmentalize and scar over concealing the damage, but the structural stability will usually not be strong enough once this happens to justify removing the bolts or cables.

What a T E A M, you guys are. Pete Nelson from Tree House Masters on Animal Plant loves trees as much you Laura. Funny story, Sam's dad, 58 years ago had a Bois d Arc tree, that developed a giant hole in trunk & part of side. Growing up a farmer, he used whatever he had to fix things. He had some concrete bags, mixed in old wheelbarrow & poured into hole to keep bugs out. That Bois d Arc lived a long healthy life. I guess the bugs stayed out. Thx for all you do to help us in our gardens. cgzone8

It looks great and it will work. My Dad told me of a split walnut tree that his grandmother saved in the 1940's, by lashing it together as tight as the men could get it and then driving a cross-cut saw through it. I'm assuming it was driven from the top down but he'd chuckle and say whoever cuts that tree down is in for a surprise when they go to cut it up. It's been 7-8 years since I drove by the old homestead and the house is gone but that walnut tree was still there.

In our old home the first year there, lighting struck our tree, and split it down the middle exactly, and the trees service used the same means to pull it together. It was pulled together so well you could not tell it was split at all, it was the only tree in the front that gave our yard and house shade. No tar used like our people have talked about down below. Keep us posted on it. Aaron good job, Laura good job on the research and wanting to keep the tree. Stay Safe and garden on.

If they can do it, I think you have a good chance at it as well. Pete Nelson is located in Washington....maybe he can be part of one of your videos and provide some tips on your tree repair? Pete is a world-renowned tree house designer and builder and is known as the “tree whisperer.” Good luck with the tree repair. It is a beautiful tree, definitely worth trying to save.

So happy you decided to give her your all and try to save this grand old lady. I know taking it down was an understandable option, but it was painful to hear. Trees are amazing with what they're able to overcome and thrive and you are giving it the best opportunity to thrive. BTW, this granny doesn't want you on a ladder until maybe April. My mother, long gone now, would be apoplectic watching you doing things with your arms over your head. Imagine the advise I got when I was pregnant!

Oh, I'm so glad you asked us to pray for your tree! I was going to leave the comment that I was going to do just that! I know for a fact that God loves and cares for His creation (the tree), but even more than that He loves His kids (you and Aaron), so praying I will be! Nothing is too small to pray for, because there's no concern of ours that's "too small" to matter to Him! Love your channel!

I have a monster Live Oak in my backyard. It is an amazing focal point and is quite a bit of equity on our Northern California property. We moved into the house 34 years ago and the turn buckle was already placed in the crotch of the tree. My guess it has been there for over 50+ years. The tree is beautiful and magnificent and continues to thrive. Best wishes that the same happens to this tree!

My parents had a Mayday tree that split into thirds after a weird snowstorm that hit in the summer. The tree lasted another 25 years after bolting it together. They just had to remove it this year because it had a disease. It’s amazing what trees can overcome!!
