Trying to FIX The Retro Future's £24 Nintendo Switch

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Retro Future's original £24 ($30) Nintendo Switch video - • £24 Nintendo Switch! -...
Hi, in this video I attempt to fix The Retro Future's Nintendo Switch. Elliot bought it from eBay and it unfortunately it had severe water damage. After cleaning it and removing the corrosion it still didn't work, so he asked me if I wanted to 'try' and get it working. I was amazed that he managed to get a Nintendo Switch so cheaply so I was very happy to give it a go.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

    This is the problem I see on a lot of Switches. Seems that those main chips are pretty weak with very few fuse protections on the board for them. At some point I'm going to just take one of those chips off to see if the shorts are gone. I certainly couldn't have done anything more for it than you did. You gave it a good try!

    yup best to check multiple times before applying power, once its done it's done. It's best to remove the chip put it on cold lining it up then use stripped bread ties + aluminum foil(or just make it from thin sheet aluminum reusing it) to make a make a stabilizer/heat concentrator while it's still cold lowering the chance of a short under the chip, when your bumping it around on the board it causes bridges as you can see on visible pins, you may have edited it out cutting right to it. When its stable the balls have way more tendency of bonding correctly and straight. Next time just eat a banana may help with the shaky hands. Use to use these techniques on ps3, xbox, and Wii repair when I did it for spare cash. These new consoles learned their lessons, Nintendo still needs to catch up, the switches cooling is a joke. I like the idea of a clear case cutting a design with a dremel right on top of the fan allowing more air flow at least, the motors are known to burn out due to a component because they get so hot. I heard that that component is what takes most switches down, no fan, you screwed.

You have come such a long way. Would you like my hoverboard boards to try and fix? (I wont send the complete hoverboard lol)

  • @Mymatevince

    Thanks so much Emma :-) I think those hoverboards come with 3 different style of boards. I know when I looked before the cheaper ones were set up differently with less boards than the more expensive ones. I forget which ones I have here, I think it was the cheaper ones. Last time I looked you could buy the boards for approx. £20 on eBay. Although the hoverboards are always an interest fix you have to ask yourself do you really want to trust me to fix something yourself or your daughter is going to ride on!!!!!! Lol I don't think I am ready for that level of responsibility as I could foresee a broken arm in your household after getting thrown off :-)

  • @DEmma1972

    @DEmma1972

    Hi Vince. Thanks for replying. I have found out so much about these boards since I got them. The hoverboard I got (for £20) had a discharged battery. It was reading as 3.1V when it should be about 39-41V. The board is blue and is a V1 board. It has a main board and 2 gyro boards (total 3). This is not a top end board, but it is also not the cheapest type. The boards look pretty clean at 1st glance and I asked the seller who confirmed they were used seldom and then put in the garage for a few years. An attempt was made by a friend of the seller to fix the board (battery was dead)(INSERT FACEPALM) and upon closer inspection you can see parts have been resoldered. The sellers friend obviously couldnt fix the issue but I dont think he has caused any faults. As I said, this is a V1 board which I have discovered has a little known fault in the design where if the button is held in to calibrate it, then it can brick the logic board. I believe this may have been done by the seller or his friend to try and fix the board. I have investigated the board and found some shorts which seem confusing. I cannot fix the board but my knowledge and skills fall way short of even novice level. I actually just want closure on the boards to see if it is a bricked chip (in which case the board is useless to me on any level). An equivalent set of boards (Not V1) is only £15 on Ebay so I dont care if you wreck it to find the fault, but it may be a learning process for yourself and your viewers and undoubtedly some hoverboard users have had this fault. I did buy a further 3 boards (1 for BF, 1 for daughter and 1 for spares) which were sold as returns and faulty for £20 each. All 3 work fine but 2 need new batteries. These are all much more modern type but with only 2 boards (cheap version). Still a bargain as they are nearly new and if bought new they would cost £149 each.

  • @Mymatevince

    @Mymatevince

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@DEmma1972 You got a real bargain there. £20 is a great buy. I will pass on the chance to fix them but thanks for the offer. If they had the same boards as my 2 hoverboards, then I could then measure different things and maybe even swap over components. Then possibly show them working at the end but without the same type it would be highly unlikely I could fix them. Thanks for thinking of me with the idea for a video though :-)

    Nice one Vince. I'm an engineer, ok I'm an electro / electronic / mechanical so I'm not an expert in any. But I have to admit sometimes your thinking is way off but you don't give in, and other times I think OMG why didn't I think of that. I will definitely give you an award for perseverance. That row of capacitors could just be 1x faulty capacitor and because it's across the others it shows that they are all faulty but again it is also more likely the main chip is at fault. What would have been good is if you actually removed the chips when you were trying to reflow them to see if and when the short disappeared then put the chips back once you found the fault. I must admit working on stuff that small I would look like I was in the middle of an earthquake. Through hole PCBs are the best. Keep up the good work sir.

    Don't be discouraged from taking that NVIDIA-chip off. If it really is a lost cause, you're free to do whatever the *_hell_* you want with it! After all, you're the Switch-killer, might as well kill it off completely. But before you do that: please, for the love of the Switch-god (wait, that's you, right?), please *TRY* to swap that NVIDIA-chip over with one from another defunct board! Or maybe just reflow or lift off and put back on? If it *is* a lost cause, none of this would matter anyway, it would just be for good entertainment (and perhaps as a lesson in how easy it really is to put a big BGA-chip back on, as well as finding out *if* it was the NVIDIA-chip that *was* causing the shorts). If it is *not* a lost cause, this could be its last hope. EDIT: UNEDITED: Edited wrong comment...

    Resistance to ground on dies (gpu etc) are always extremely low in the ohm range due to the little amount of resistance in silicon itself. Memory is usually higher. As it’s a lost cause at this point I’d just probe around the board and those shorts just remove parts until it is removed in the way of learning. If the main chip is shorted 0 ohm to ground then it could be anything on that power line, anything on the vrm which is causing it. It could just be a capacitor which has failed. I’ve had shorted bga chips before where the short has been removed only by removing the chip due to an internal short. Best of luck and good attempt vince.

    Good idea! The more smaller things you can remove from the board to try and rule out them first the better! You could measure connectivity from those caps to other small ICs, transistors, diodes etc on the board to see if anything else is connected - it might be one of those components!

    I havent whatched the whole video but did you try hocking up loads of amps on the 5v oder 12v rail or whatever rails the switch has. This will simply burn out the part where a short is an heat it up. You can then find that spot with alcohol (it vaporates) or by touching with your hand oder a ir camera. Dont know if it myght help. Saw some comments it could be the main chip.

    Thanks Marco, unfortunately I haven't got a bench power supply where I can change the amps, my one changes the voltage but I think the amps are set. I have seen Louis Rossman do this technique before. Also if I am honest I don't know how to detect the different power rails!!! Cheers for the suggestion :-)

    What do you think it would take to desolder that cpu/gpu chip and take one off your dead boards and replace it. Are those all bga chips ?

  • @Mymatevince

    @Mymatevince

    5 жыл бұрын

    They would be BGA Dave, and I have heard it is married to other chips on the board (don't know if that is correct or not). Unfortunately even if it wasn't married it would be beyond me and my tools. Maybe one day though :-)

  • @davesmith7671

    @@Mymatevince literally just got to the part where you said that in the video . Hadn't thought about them being married to the board . I'm guessing that's kind of like the same as the Xbox motherboards and the optical drives were as I believe married to their boards too. And I believe that soon enough you'll be more than able to do a full reball job. I've attempted in the past with a gpu on a laptop to reflow the bga chip and that was a total failure so I attempted to do the reball manually and ruined the lot. Just didn't know if the chip on the switch was a bga as it would of been great to see this dead switch bought back alive. still enjoyable to watch and I'm glad you got to attempt to repair this after seeing Elliot's video I thought of you instantly for this one .

    So I got a nintendo switch for $25 from an acquaintance and I was told it didn't work. I plugged it in and after an hour or so it turned on and seemed to be fine. I used it for a while to make sure it was fine then I sold it on ebay. After it arrived the buyer claimed it wasn't charging and when I got it back the charge port was destroyed. I discovered this after giving them the full refund so I just bucked up and removed the port with my quick hot air station and replaced it. I plugged it in and it started charging, then an hour or so later it turned off and wouldnt turn back on. I finally managed to get it on and it was just a blue screen. Does anyone have any ideas??? thanks.
