Trying to fix the BUSIEST transit hub in Cities Skylines 2 history

Ойындар

Today we're revamping the transit hub that we've been working on for the past few weeks, increasing its size and capacity, but most importantly reducing the amount of intersections and complexity of the adjacent Sycamore Street that the hub connects to. Additionally, we tweak some existing bus lines in hopes of optimizing them, build a new tram depot and surrounding row-house neighborhood, as well as finally upgrading some of the existing buildings alongside Sycamore Street - an area with some of the highest property prices in the metropolitan area. Hope you enjoy!

You could do a elevated metro system, kind of like a monorail that goes on a bridge above or next to roads. This would solve your problem of not wanting an underground metro system, and it would probably lead to less destruction.

Your problem isn't the design of the transit hub, your problem is your entire transportation network. Long post ahead, you have been warned lol 👇: I think you could really benefit from approaching this transit system as a series of layers. This is a concept that I really don't see done right with a lot of CS series and it's very difficult to pull off. The best example of CS transit layering that I found was from Akruas' Asturis public transit overview video. It's a great video that executes this concept flawlessly. Basically the concept of layering your transit system is appointing (and more importantly committing) to functions that each technology of transit is meant to serve. For example, if your spine or core of your transit system is your trams then to layer it, you would design your bus routes to feed into your tram core. Sure it forces a transfer as a passenger in many cases but the trade off is taking public transit vehicles off the busiest roads which helps to alleviate traffic. Your next problem is that a lot of routes (both bus & tram) cannibalize each other which is a symptom of not layering your transit systems. You were starting to layer a bit when you adjusted the bus and tram networks by the airport but you can definitely take this much further. Transit cannibalization is when two or more routes reach the same stops and serve the same destinations and origins. I noticed particularly that Sycamore street has a lot of transit cannibalization happening between trams and bus routes. Furthermore all of the bus stops that feed into this transfer center are essentially cannibalizing each other at one point or another. To avoid this, you'll either need to redesign the buses to feed into the trams more or you'll need to reduce the amount of shared stops and interlining. If you plan on making the transit center the focal point of convergence, then you don't need to offer any more passenger route transfer opportunities along the way. CS1 and CS2 never really did handle interlining well so by simplifying the opportunities for passenger transfers, you also combat a game mechanic that has never really worked all that well. Firstly, I think that changing the entrance of the transit center will be beneficial overall. But I actually don't even think that you need to take it that far if you simplify your region's transit routes and apply the concept of layering your transit system. Here is what I would do before changing the entrance of the transit center: - I would first decide which transit technology will serve as your core/spine. I think that you're leaning towards trams but honestly, an American city of 90k population would never have a cluster of 40+ story towers like yours does. CS1 and CS2 never did have realistic populations that corresponded to real city infrastructure, so I honestly think that you could consider a metro system at this point since the population would never be realistic anyways. - Assuming that you stick with trams, I really only think you need 3 lines: Line 1 goes up and down Riverview in a straight North-South line, also connecting to the transit center; Line 2 goes up and down East Riverview in a straight North-South line; and then Line 3 would cross the river from East Riverview in a East-West line, and connect to the transit center in Riverview, granting a transfer opportunity between all tram lines at one point or another, pinging back and forth. Tl,DR: It's just 2x North-South lines in each city, and 1x East-West line that crosses the river and terminates/converges at the transit center. - After establishing the spine, I would eliminate all bus routes and re-do them from scratch so that they feed directly into the core transit system as passenger transfer stops, forcing a cim to transfer modalities. Avoid sending any buses across the river. If cims want to cross the river using public transit, they can transfer onto tram line 2. This will likely result in many smaller East-West aligned routes but this is what buses are designed for in real life in cities with multiple modalities of transit: buses feed passengers into the superior modality. Be strict with feeding your bus passengers into the tram lines! This won't feel natural with the way that you have been playing since these will likely just be East-West circulator routes that feed into the tram network but these kinds of changes happen when cities introduce a new layer of transit in real life. - For your outer bus lines, try to get them to terminate at the nearest tram stop, forcing modality transfers for passengers going into the city. This helps to alleviate traffic from downtown and again, it feeds into your core system that can handle higher passenger volumes. If you're concerned about getting Cims from point A to point B quickly, then it's time consider a metro system. Besides, you can use this opportunity to build park & ride infrastructure or little mini stations with 2-4 bus bays for your outer bus routes feeding into your transit system. - Definitely delete all express routes. Your roads are already full. I have only had express routes function properly once and that was back in CS1 with metro stations that had both passthrough stations and dual-platform stations pretty much eliminating interference from each other. Your express buses will be waiting for regular buses much like your express trams since they share the same roads. If you're gonna make a proper express route of any kind, with your layout, you'll need to separate the express route from the regular traffic and from the regular stops. And I don't think you have the space. - The only buses that I would place in the transit center as stops, are some intercity buses if it makes sense to do so. And maybe an East-West line or 2 in Riverview where it actually makes sense to terminate them at the transit center. Other than that, I would eliminate all other bus routes from the transit center since they should be feeding their passengers into the trams. The big idea behind this approach is to take the buses off of Sycamore street and get them feeding their passengers into the tram network which can carry more people per vehicle. There's just too many buses in the transit center, and that clogs up your roads. And all of the current bus routes interact with the current tram lines at one point or another; and I strongly think that those interactions should have those buses unloading their passengers onto the superior mode of transit. Hope that helps with some ideas!

I somewhat agree with mitch that your pedestrians trying to cross are causing delays. I would suggest building a pedestrian overpass or underpass across sycamore street all the way to your main train station that leads the pedestrians into the different bus and tram lanes and different train platforms for efficiency and eliminating most of your pedestrian road crossings

Hi, I have a suggestion about the tram depo. Instead of destroying a wealthy neighborhood and putting it in the middle of valuable real estate, it would make much more sense to put it on the abandoned tracks behind the yard. The history could be that it was built with the extension. If you have other plans for this area, built it near the airport or in an industrial area, where land is cheaper and people will not be botherd by construction or tram noise. These are the things that cities usually think about, so it would be much more realistic than destroying houses. Seccond recommendation: build a good commuter rail system. Even for north American standards, the number of passengers would justify a train line. The two express lines to east Riverview could be replaced by a commuter rail line. As other people said, you should consider multiple transit layers. Commuter trains and express bus lines go from downtown non-stop (on rails and highways) to suburbs (East Riverview, Kendrick etc.) The tram could also be more seperated, maybe with dedicated lanes. I also think that no tram should end at the hub. The demand is there, so just extend the Yard line to east Riverview and remove the express line, which is not realistic anyways. To finish on a positive note, I love this city, it's my favorite CS2 one. I hope you get to read this comment and consider it

If you want express transportation, u kinda need it to be on its own separate route. Cant have express anything while sharing the same route as every other mode of transport. Won’t really work as a “express” line. A great remedy for this would be metro. Establish a metro network with express only routes. Then your system will work as intended. Sharing an express route tram line with every other tram line and bus line will just choke your system and forever back it up.

Ad some rounded shapes buildings to do an organic pit wich even can be use as an underground metro station. Even if your Tram lines and Bus line are becoming more and more efficients, maybe it's time to ad another type of transportation and the metro seems to be a good fit, even if it's an elevated line or an undergroud line. Dont know if CTS2 is doing very well with the metro but i'm sure you can find some realy cool assets in the workshop. Keep going man you're doing such a great job !

Something realistic that would really help with the pedestrian overcrowding at bus stops is to have an exit and entrance stop. One stop when it enters the hub, one when it leaves. For example, the bus can first have an exit stop , on a place where you have the most transfers (people leaving that bus), and then loop (or without loop), have an extra stop at the point where most people *enter* that bus. You can do this in a way to spread out transfers , which heavily reduced bunching and queues for waiting passengers.

I think this would be an interesting way to show some developement You also should use more pedestrian bridges to cross Sycamore Street. I mean, it is one of the most used main roads in whole Riverview, ohnly an insane person would habe a pedestrian crossing there, especially an unregulated without traffic lights. IRL it would be a death sentence to cross the street there. Also for your main bus routes: Use bigger busses to get more people moved.

For the empty spot I think you should try and see if one of the European signature buildings fits, the kinda circular one. I think it would be a great as redevelopment of an older area and very modern looking

Many US cities feature Catholic churches in downtown settings. If available, that would be perfect for that vacant spot. Other places of worship would be nice for the region, too.

Just some "what I would do" tips. Why not seperate the busroutes from the tram routes around the station to let it flow freely? In stead of making a new buslane to sycamore street just let them use Dale Lane and Emmerson street to sycamore street. At the other end make a bus lane connecting from the city start of the riverview express way. The other route is already there, only make waypoints. When the tram and bus are seperated, the bus uses quiet roads to enter and exit the main roads and therefore make room for other trafic and the trams faster. What I also would do is elevate Dale lane to connect it to the elevated Emmerson street to make more space between the crossings. And in what I think is realistic in building a new tram depot, building a depot in a dence area where property prices are very high makes no sence. It is to expensive. Placing the depot just out if the city is realistic. The area where the depot is placed is just the right place of expensive hig(er) rised buildings. Love watching! Have fun

The biggest thing this build is missing is more stop signs. North America loves stop signs that bus hub would be littered with them in reality and the crosswalk over sycamore street should have a dedicated traffic light. They would limit the ways to cross sycamore street to keep cars moving. You should remove all ways to cross sycamore street from the round about to the intersection where the buses enter and leave the station other than the one by the tram stop and add a traffic light just to control people crossing. If you have a mod to let you place stop signs only on side roads that would be more realistic and help your traffic a ton.

As the student of ecocity i am deeply hurt by removal of every greenery in this episode : And for the empty space, I imagine a new eco-friendly residential/commercial/office development with an built in park for residents, and users, with a linear park that stretches along the road from there, to the cementery, something like The High Line in New York.

Our tram line is overloaded. What should we do? European cities: Let's create dedicated tram lines. Trams will be able to travel along the line faster and more often, carrying more passengers. North American cities: We will create an express tram line in mixed traffic and without the possibility of overtaking local trams. Riverview is indeed a very North American city. 😄😄😄

Please separate your trams as much as possible (more than that), because fighting cars with trams blocked by cars is not the way to go. (For instance use raillines on lindsberg street or put your trams on backstreets behind dense areas to be efficient but not on avenues. And your could hierarchize your sytems more because interlingning is not really efficient, for instance : there is no resaon for a bus parallel to the trams to the airport (at least on the common part)

It wouldn’t be an American city without using the vacant spot to expand it and put a stadium in the houses spot. See LA and Dodger stadium, San Diego and Padres, Atlanta and Falcons, Baltimore and Oriole Park, and too many examples to list in America. America loves to displace people for sports teams.
