Trying to FIX a Faulty 1995 US Panasonic 3DO Games Console

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi, this 'trying to fix video shows me attempting to repair a Panasonic 3DO games console donated to me by Asher from the United States. He has also donated a bunch of games and another surprise!!! This particular 3DO is a US based console and it is from 1995. I don't normally accept donations but on this one I thought it would be interesting as personally I had never heard of the 3DO before :-)
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

The 3DO was the first console I bought with my own money. It was quite difficult to get one of these here in Brazil, I saved 1000 dollars in a year to pay for a smuggler to get one of these for me. He would go abroad almost every month and for almost 2 years he'd bring me new games. Unfortunately in one of these trips he got shot on a armed robbery and died in 1997. Sad that to this day we have to rely on smugglers to bring new consoles to the country (an illegal PS4 costs only 300 dollars while an official sony ps4 with taxes costs almost 1000 dollars). Nice video btw.

I remember the first time i saw this console in a video rental store that also had games and game systems. They had all the consoles hooked up and you could play them with demo games and the 3DO video quality had me in awe by how awesome it looked. I am sure it doesn't compete with the new game systems but back then it was awesome.

3DO often gets thrown in with the Philips CD-i as one of the crappy multimedia consoles of the early 90s. However 3DO was actually a cool design created by the same people who came up with the Amiga. The founder of Electronic Arts, Trip Hawkings then formed the 3DO company to sell it. Unfortunately all the companies that they sold the license to, ended up having to sell the machine at way too high a price. Trip really believed in the machine and even left EA to try to make 3DO succeed (EA quickly turned into a monster without his lead). Personally I think 3DO is a fun machine especially if you are into cheesy Full Motion Video games.

It was when CDROM games were just taking off so a lot of them made use of CD technology. The games i remember most were Wing Commander 3, Need For Speed (the original one!) and Return Fire. Definitely check those out!

I had a 3DO when I was little. The games came in those huge boxes in the beginning but they switched to the smaller jewel cases later on. I don't recognize many of the games you have but there are some good games on the system. The only game you have that I had was Gex which I remember as being one of the better games. I think it was the most powerful console at the time but the price was really really high, like $650 US dollars. I was only able to watch the first bit of the video so far, I really hope you're able to fix it!

The laser in that 3D0 might actually be a Helium Neon Laser Tube and therefore has high voltages present inside, a Helium Neon Laser should not destroy any discs, Your LCD TV is actually a Multi-Standard LCD-TV, I do think that you are curious about how the system works but if you take the metal screen off and have a look around. I really thought that this 3DO had a Helium Neon Laser.

Games were definitely a problem, there weren't that many and even less good ones.

I thought the license model of the 3DO turned out pretty good since most titles are at least professional looking unlike the CD-i or Amiga CD32 which got some very amateur quality software a lot of the time. I mean yeah 3DO did get Plumbers Don't Wear Ties. ^_^ Dang what a package, great way to start. :D Trip Hawkins had this crazy idea that a game console could be like a video player or microwave, unchanging with little to no hardware generations. The multi manufacturing setup did lower the 3DO cost eventually but the ever advancing console scene released the Saturn/PS1/N64 showing the obvious matter that you can't just sit still in that market. :\

There are some great games for the system - things like Space Hulk, Cannon Fodder, Wing Commander, Street Fighter 2 etc. No protection on these I think - pretty sure you can just burn a CD with the ISO. It might be worth removing the PSU board to check for dry solder joints (maybe on the under of the mains lead socket?). If you decide to sell any of the games please let me know! Do you keep all the things you collect - I've always wondered where you store all this stuff lol.

3DO failed for two main reasons: The initial $699 price tag, and the lack of a must-have game. Much like the CDI, the 3DO had a large library of weird games that primarily looked like bad ports of PC games, or full motion video Sega CD ports. The closest they ever came was Gex, which was later released for Playstation

On the US plugs there can be a bigger prong, if that is the case than polarity matters.

3DO was definitely sold in the UK I remember playing with one in an Electronic Boutique store years ago was about the same time frame as the Amiga console as well. I remember honestly wondering if they managed to sell any of them. Just really thinking UK power would have probably worked fine but might be wrong as I'm typing this a few min in.

Dear Vince! Is there any advice you might have for raising the optical drive array a little bit? I'm experiencing some scraping of certain CDs from the bottom on the drive bay.

Very true your comment about how the PS 1 succeeded and this failed and how different it could’ve been. The 90’s were a make or break decade in the console wars that saw many casualties, even some big names like Sega and Atari. I wonder if the future is just destined to be dominated by Sony and Microsoft?

Vince , also look for any leakage from the electrolytic caps, usually seen as gunge on the PCB traces .

You need to check out Return Fire, Road Rash, Need for Speed, Crash 'n Burn, Way of the Warrior, Off-World Interceptor and PO'ed. The first 4 for sure. All but CnB and WotW were on PS1, but weren't nearly as good as on 3DO.

Hi Vince, I was going to suggest you get a Raspberry Pi as it's something that I think you will really get into. There is a million things you can do with them. They are a great tool for learning computing, electronics and coding, which is something your viewers would be interested in. I'm not really into the coding side of things but love all the other aspects of them. The first thing you are going to want to do is install Retro Pi on it and play all the retro games. retropie.org.uk/ I haven't done so myself but it will get you started on learning how to write an OS to a SD card and get it going on your Pi. There is a huge amount of info about them on KZread and the net. Have fun and keep smiling. 😁

Hey Vince, this is a totally unrelated question but I figured you'd be best person to ask this. Basically my tv is broken and I have a ps4 and a laptop. My laptop does not have hdmi input, its just hdmi output so I'd wanna know if there is an adaptor to make the laptop accept video input from a gaming console via the HDMI port.

60hz in America and 59hz elsewhere. If I recall the difference between pal and the other standard is one refreshes in the north / south configuration and the other does it in the east / west configuration.

I didn't have a 3do but I did have a phillips CDi, with the Dragons lair and 7th guests games. I think CDi was also made buy other companies other than Philips just like the 3do. it was basically a fancy cd player. And that is a raspberry pi you got there, model 3 I think, I have a couple cause they're dirt cheap.
