Trying To Call Him Off Private! | Leftover Elk Hunt (EP. 2)

Marcus continues to make the most of his leftover elk tag and he locates a big herd first thing in the morning on a pivot, but they move well onto private land. They locate two other raghorns on public and try to make a move on them.
Marcus picks up a third bull that is bordering the line between private and public land. So they sneak as close as they can and try to call the bull off of the private land to where Marcus could shoot him. The bull reacts to the calling and does start to make his way onto public. Marcus continues to try and woo him over so that he can get a shot within archery range.

Nowadays, weather and hunting pressure drive elk onto private land for wintertime grazing. Older bulls tend to haunt the public land bedding areas bordering private land, while cows and young bulls herd up crossing from one to another nightly. In my experience, I haven't had any luck trying to call elk back onto public land once they have crossed over to private land. The only way I know to hunt this situation is to be in place before first-light, close to where they like to cross over, and shoot elk before they have the chance to cross back over onto private land from public land. The elk return to public land sometime during the night. If anyone knows of a better way to hunt border elk, I am all ears!

What happens if you shoot on public but it runs well into private before it dies? I'm lucky enough to not have this issue to worry about, but I am curious.

I can't believe that you don't use estrus scent Marcus. Get upwind of him with it and he'd have followed you around like a puppy dog. He wouldn't have cared what you smelled like either. First hand experience with it on whitetail bucks.

55 yards is pretty far, unless he has a really fast bow... I passed on a 50 yard shot on the biggest buck of my life a few days ago, ended up shooting him 4 days later... An Elk is a much bigger target though than an oklahoma whitetail...

Times have sure changed in bowhunting when someone is questioned for passing up a 55 yard shot. The effect of technology I guess. If I was filming for a public show I'd be erring on the side of ethics as well too.

Beautiful country... but, Marcus! What awful calling! Listen to it yourself; if you weren't blasting out distress, you were buzzing the reed. You need to think about what you are communicating. BE THE COW ELK! Be coquettish. Get your head in the game!

Tell that to all the elk I've called in using that technique. I've listened to real elk make those same sounds and filmed elk and recorded audio at close range. I have on multiple occasions heard them make that buzzy whinny sound. It works very well on convincing young bulls and cows to come in. Whether it's distress or not, I've never had it spook elk but have called in plenty using it. It doesn't work on big bulls, but I knew my audience in this situation, a young 5pt, and I called him in 3 times...
