Trying the WORLD's FIRST HAMBURGER! Is Louis' Lunch Worth The Hype?

While New Haven is home to many famous restaurants, particularly the legendary New Haven pizza scene, Louis' Lunch may be the most famous restaurant in New Haven. Just steps from the uber prestigious Yale University, Louis' Lunch is the first hamburger restaurant in the world, or at least they claim to be. There are many competing claims for who invented the hamburger and we will just have to take Louis' Lunch word for it in this case.
Now whether or not Louis' Lunch invented the hamburger or not, it is still one of the most famous restaurants in New Haven and therefore one of the most famous restaurants in Connecticut and one that is also somewhat commutable from New York City. We drove up from New Jersey to answer the question of is Louis' Lunch good or is Louis' Lunch overrated? Or are the open flame cooked Louis' Lunch burgers truly divine and a work of art?
We semi road-tripped to New Haven to check out this New Haven haunt and one of the best restaurants near Yale University. Will it live up to the hype?

That is oddly the perfect description. Imagine how much of a game changer this was during the time though. To look at the smash style burgers with brisket/chuck/sirloin blends with toasted potato buns & the sweet/acidic sauce styles to cut through the inherent richness that burgers naturally have, really showcases how much we have elevated the burger game. It's fascinating to Me that in regards to any culinary techniques and recipes that if there is something to be improved upon, human beings will figure it out and inevitably improve it. in regards to food, it is absolutely the best time to be alive.

Looks like they changed the cooking process. They used to put the onion on the patty, then close the basket and cook. That definitely added flavor. The onion was charred and the onion flavor cooked into the burger. I was never served a burger that raw there. I haven't been there in years. I think you may have saved me a trip. One vital piece of information you forgot to mention.... No ketchup, or any condiments in the building period.

Those ancient hamburger roasters exhibit the yellow gas-flame, an indication of dangerous carbon monoxide, and they are not vented to the outside. Efficient gas combustion would burn blue and generate enough heat to actually fully cook the burgers. You would think the owners might have figured out how to vent the burners to the outside since 1895.

Yes, it was recognized by the library of congress as the official "birthplace" of the hamburger sandwich but the sandwich was first officially (I once read something about it being created at the Erie County Fair in NY but that was heavily disputed) invented at the Seymour Fair by Charlie Nagreen in Wisconsin in 1885. I ate there about 50 years ago when I was looking for a job in New Haven. I stumbled upon Louis Lunch and ordered a cheeseburger. When I asked for ketchup, I was given the condescending line “we don’t allow ketchup in the lunchroom” which kind of sent me back on my heels. Anyway, I had the burger and because of that experience, I kind of didn’t want to like,it but to be honest, it was very good. I really enjoyed it. The lack of ketchup really brought out the flavor of the meat.

I believe trying where a dish was conceptualized gives anyone who enjoys food and likes to cook a jump off point to see where the food went and where it could still go. The original flame-broiled burger? It looks like the size of the patty could be thinner to lower the wait times (maybe sacrilege?), and increase the heat to get really good char-grill marks. Seasoning should be on point (which it sounds like it wasn't). Keep the simple menu and prices, just concentrate on a tasty consistently simple burger and just keep the line moving.

To Me, It reminds Me of the first burger I ever made (personally if it's not smash style I prefer a medium rare burg). Imagine how much of a game changer this was during the time though. To look at the smash style burgers with brisket/chuck/sirloin blends with toasted potato buns & the sweet/acidic sauce styles to cut through the inherent richness that burgers naturally provide the palette, it really goes to showcases how much we have elevated the burger game. It's fascinating to Me that in regards to any culinary techniques and recipes that exist, that if there is something to be improved upon, human beings will figure it out and inevitably improve it. in regards to food, it is absolutely the best time to be alive.

They have a very particular niche, where they put themselves in malls, and then provide options for every member of the family or the shopping group. I'm not sure how they make it work, but I think a lot of it has to do with the massive volume of customers that move through the restaurant
