Trying out Mozart K330 on the new Walter fortepiano

Anton Walter was Mozart's favorite piano maker. The Walter piano covers the gap between the harpsichord and the romantic fortepiano and is a very fortunate addition to my collection, at last allowing me to publicly perform music from the classical era.
This is a footage of a 1st attempt to record the instrument, which is at my place for some days now.
Subscribe to the channel for more videos of the quest of the classical composers sound ideal! As a classical fortepiano is new to me as well, I will be sharing thoughts and performances online -until we are free to meet again after covid-19 concert restictions! Stay safe!

The modern piano is a triumph of technology and artistry. These early instruments (or reproductions), though historically interesting, are tough to listen to for very long. 😎🎹

True. But don't forget that early pianos were a revolution in their times. Just like you say for the modern piano. After playing on harpsichords and clavichiords, Mozart felt that the Walter piano opened a whole new world. This makes things way more interesting.

This video is a delight. This piano is ideally suited to this Mozart piece. Thanks ! I think many people today forget that the music he composed was written for instruments that had a very different sound from today's pianos. In many ways the tone reminds me of the harpsichord recordings of Wanda Landowska.

Your point is very complex. That R&D continues today as the modern piano continues to evolve in the Hands of those manufacturers pushing it further actually starting in Japan via Yamaha's hand built CF experiments and the Kawai - Shegeru but Fazioli and the ultra modern up-dated Bechstein pianos are mind blowing to pianists from Angela Hewitt to Herbie Hancock. Who've both switched over to Fazioli.

The 21 year old English musician Thomas Attwood visited M. around the 20th of July 1785 at which time he was able to see Mozart’s Walter Klavier ‘which had a set of organ pedals four octaves in breadth from c to c’’ and acted the part of a second Klavier’ - ‘The afternoon was very hot but when I went to see M. he was quite formally drest standing at his stand-up writing table busily composing a string quartet (one of 6 dedicated to Haydn) - and when I reach’d out to shake his hand, it was as cold as ice…’ Attwood began his studies in counterpoint ten days later on Monday 1 August 1785 (and remain’d a pupil until 4 March 1787 when he & his English friends Stephen (composer) & Nancy Storace (soprano) & Michael Kelly (tenor) of Dublin) all travel’d back to London stopping off in Salzburg to visit Leopold Mozart who was then slowly dying of cancer… At any rate the Walter Klavier with its organ-stile pedalboard of 4-octaves was already in use at the Landstrasse flat (now 5 Domgasse, Wien) - when his father visited him earlier that year (Jan to May 1785) he wrote to Mozart’s sister (‘Your brother has had to employ piano-movers & a piano-tuner anytime he performs for some nobleman or at the Theatre-you cannot imagine all the fuss & confusion I can hardly find a quiet minute to myself !’)

These clackety monsters sound like nothing but wood and thin wires . I have many cds of these things . I find it hard to believe anyone would want to hear an entire recital on an earlier keyboard . Hadyn sometimes sounds because he is blocky ,chopped up sounding . Wheras Mozart,Hummel,Field and Schubert really need a singing sound that doesn't die immediately or sound like a woodblock with pitch !

Perhaps, who knows? 😀However there are two facts to consider: 1st, Mozart was very excited about Walter pianos as in that time piano was not only the latest technology but a new instrument alltogether. 2nd, as the relation between instrument and composer is bilateral, had he had a different piano, he would have composed differently.

@@ClassicalSoundIdeal No ifs ands or buts, Mozart (and Bach and Chopin and...) would have dropped the crappy instruments of their day in favor of more modern ones if given the chance. The evidence for this is that they always used the best pianos they could get their hands on. No different than us preferring a modern car over a Model T. That's not to say that there's no place for these period instruments. There's a lot to be learned from how it played and sounded back in the day!

Interesting you brought that up since I had a lengthy conversation with him about that very conversation. His opinion was neutral on what instrument his music was played on, however he thought the late Romantic period late 19th century was overworked, at times tedious and dull and overated in general. He also told me he had a weakness for KFC, and would sometimes indulge himself on chicken to the point of collapse, not disimilar to a drunk bender. He also said if he hears his Turkish March one more time, he's going to drop flower pots out the window from his apartment on unsuspecting passersby

Wonderful that yiou have the means to acquire and personally investigate the action, sound, respone etc. of these instruments ! It's exciting . I discovered the recently deceased player Ingrid Haebler and she helped me realize (how important listening is ) .Every note is part of a phrase and every note is not a throwaway action .Each sound-note needs to be attended to . Please listen to her /Pires ,Uchida etc. everyone knows already and their playing will always live but Haebler too is unique !

I had never a personal encounter with a McNulty piano before, although I was aware of their great reputation and had heared then on recordings. When I found this piano for sale at a very reasonable price, made in the early 90's, I took the opportunity although it was thousands of miles away and there was no way to try it out, certainly during Covid19 travel restrictions! I decided to buy it and I have to say, it exceeded my expectations! It is a very fine instrument, easy to play but with such qualities that I feel that, after 6 months I haven't yet explored them all. Please, feel free to watch the more recent videos of my channel, with better recording gear which does more justice to the instrument. Kind regards from Athens, Greece.

Vibrations from the straight strung fortepianos travel along the strings and along the body of the instrument, so the best recording and listening spot is past the bottom of the instrument. The raised lid is useless for straight strung instrument, it doesn't deflect the sound, it only dilutes it. The raised lid deflects sound only with cross-strung modern pianos.

According to Thomas Attwood’s recollections from c. 20 July 1785, Mozart already had his Walter Klavier in his Landstrasse Apartment (now 5 Domgasse, Wien 1010) which had been specially fitted out with a 4-octave 32 pedal organ style ‘pedalboard attachment which acted like a second fortepiano (from the octave below middle C to c’’) - Attwood studied harmony, counterpoint & free-composition with M, six days a week beginning Monday 1 August 1785 through Saturday 3 March 1787-and his 240 or so surviving sheets of exercises with corrections by M. are an invaluable window into Mozart’s musical mind… It is known that M. us’d to have his Walter Klavier & pedalboard attachment carried around Vienna whenever he perform’d in public after 1784-and always had professional tuners on hand to keep the instrument in fine order for performances … It is a tragic fact that concerti such as K. 466 & K. 491 are not play’d on period fortepianos (or better than exact replicas) with the pedalboard attachment which gives the rather ‘thin sounding’ instrument far more depth of sonority … I suspect one day someone somewhere sometime will squawk loud enough to get a brave forte-pianist who knows how to work organ pedals to record his larger Klavier concerti the way M. himself perform’d them - instead of using anachronistic modern Boesendorfer-type monsters tun’d to the modern (‘way too sharp’) A = 440Hz when Mozart’s father’s two tuning forks shew that between say 1770 and 1800 in Southern Austria the A was generally tuned anywhere between A=425 to 432Hz) …

The modern A=440Hz is way too sharp if one compares the A=425Hz of M.’s own day in Vienna to judge from his father’s two young forks (the first set at A=425 the second at A=429Hz = about 60-cents lower on average than the modern standard A=440Hz since 1939 [NB: a semitone is divided into 100 ‘cents’] so the A of Mozart’s Vienna years sounds to us to-day as a very sharp G# … Playing Mozart & Haydn & their contemporaries on ‘fix’d instruments’ like harpsichords & clavichords &c. at c. A=425Hz rather that the modern sharpish A=440Hz would allow modern audiences to ‘enter their tonal world as they knew it’ …

Thanks for being on my channel! The moderator register works pretty much like the middle pedal in upright pianos. It puts a thin piece of cloth between the hammers and the strings thus the sound is "moderated". It produces an atmospheric and soft sound, suitable for "Fantasieren".

Thanks for the interesting question! Yes, the action is VERY light, which gives mixed feelings to the player. From the one hand, it gives a certain easiness for rapid passages and very delicate ones. If the escapement mechanism is well regulated, you can go to a pianissimo of an incredible extent. From the other hand, the light action does not forgive any sloppy playing. It is very easy to have wrong notes and unwanted dynamic discrepancies!

@@ClassicalSoundIdeal But not the whole orchestra. I mean one flute, 2 oboes, 2 basoons, 2 horns and the string sections together would be enough to drown the sound of that fortepiano. It plays against some of the orchestra but not all of it at the same time.

  • @ClassicalSoundIdeal

    @ClassicalSoundIdeal

@@pedroruiz193 all you have to do to find out yourself is go to a period instruments concert. Mozart's concerti include all these instruments. However Mozart knew how to write his music. The balance will probably not be what we know today, but it works. Mozart was a good composer. The sound of the fortepiano is not as loud as the piano but it is penetrating and has a good projection. And yes, in Mozart's concerti the fortepiano is mostly in a "dialogue" with the whole orchestra, but there are also tutti passages with piano.
