Trying HAITIAN FOOD for the First Time! | Caribbean Food Series

Episode 147: Steve Cha (aka Rockstar Eater) begins his Caribbean Food Series by trying Haitian food for the first time at Island Flavors Caribbean Cuisine in Los Angeles, CA. Haitian cuisine is a fascinating one, with flavors that mixes together Caribbean and Latin influences. Haitian food is hard to find in Los Angeles, and Island Flavors is - as of this video - the only Haitian food operation in the city that serves the authentic flavors of Haiti, serving everything from legume (vegetable stew) to chicken stew (poulet creole).
So what is Haitian food like? What should you order at a Haitian restaurant or food spot? Find out here.

KZread has helped put a positive light on Haitian cuisine. Ppl have been sleeping on our cuisine forever due to the negative stigma put upon Haitian ppl. The only cuisine out of the Caribbean that ppl thought was delicious and made a hype about was Jamaican cuisine. But now even Jamaicans themselves enjoy our cuisine. I have Jamaican friends who would request certain dishes for me to cook for them.

Try griot (fried pork), tassot kabrit (fried goat), pawson gwo sel (fish in butter, garlic sauce), fried turkey, bouyon tet kabrit (goat head soup), Haitian style macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, patties, Haitian soda I can go on and on. Haitian food is the best! And btw the black rice is called djon djon rice (djon djon is mushroom)

I'm a veteran of the U.S Army and I was embedded with the troops as a translator when Aristide returned back in 94 and the U.S. soldiers would leave the food served in the messhalll to go buy Haitian food instead. That's when I knew how good our food was. The line would be so long that if you were hungry then it would take a while to get your food. I won't lie sometimes I would be mad because I had to wait to get my food but then I understood the reason why and I was ok with it.

Every Haitian family as a slight twist to their cooking depending on where they are from in Haiti, for instant in our Legume it would include nice chuncks of beef with blue crab and you would be able to see all the vegetables in bite size in a wonderful color sauce. This restaurant did a very good job with presentation but my cooking is a slite notch up. Am very particular when our food is being presented and the authentication is very important to me as well, that's why if anyone outside of my culture wants to see what our foods tastes like I would always volunteer to make sure they know what to expect because there are frauds who pretends to know Haitian cooking and clearly they don't. I was very pleased with your video and was well done.

First-timer here. But what I love about this series, and what we love about L.A. when we travel there, is the insane and wonderful diversity of cultural experience through food that you and that city provide. We cheeseheads have there three times. Will be back more on our baseball travels - especially to experience food most people in America can't find in their city! (An issue with the Dodgers hat just for the playoffs, as we're Brewers fans. And no, we don't expect to win a game...but you never know.)

Rockstar, great name. Great choice starting your series with the First Black Republic Haiti. You got to experience Haitian culture, hospitality and awesome dishes and recipes that crossed over throughout the Caribbean. Djondjon is dried mushrooms which gives the rice the black color and a vondensed mushroom flavor. Sometimes it is cooked with dried shrimp or baby lima beans. Same delicious outcome. It was there but you didn't try the diri ak pwa or rice and beans. These are staples in Haitian cuisine. We all know you packed up takeaways. Good on you 🌟 🇭🇹 Forever.

It’s nice to see people appreciate Haitian food. 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹 I’m very surprised they didn’t have you try griot, tassot, and poisson (fried pork, goat, and red snapper respectively). Those are very popular items, too. The “green salsa” is actually green peas puréed - we call it sauce pwa. The black rice is diri Jon Jon and it gets its color from mushroom indigenous to Haiti.

Inspired by African and natives. We taught the French how to eat good. We got some of their custom, through colonization but nothing they left behind is better than what was given by our African and native ancestors. Dominicans got all our traditions as well and made it their own.
