The reason it won't work while watching this video is because as long as your camera is in focus, the detail perceived by the viewer on screen is not interacting with the human eye in the same way that light bouncing from the physical card would. We are seeing a fixed amount of light coming from the screen, regardless of the aperture of the human eye. De-focusing the camera lens, however, approximates what our eyes would physically see in person, which is why we could see the 4C (four of clubs) when you de-focused the camera.

Marked cards are good enough for magic tricks. On Bicycle deck, you can scrub away the ink on flowers to make it less noticable to the spectator.

Does the deck come with marking or do you have to mark it afterwards?

Just ignore these morons. I think you do great videos that are informative and entertaining. I've learned a lot from you and am so glad you do these tutorials. Like I say to everyone who spends all their time bitching about everything "Did it cost you anything? If not then shut up 'cause nobody put a gun to your head and forced you to watch it." At this point I get told I have issues and an attitude problem to which I tell them that I was doing fine until they started unloading about nothing. You're doing great. A fan from Canada!

If you used a real juice marking system, something like clockwork, you might be able to miss less. Also the marks can be WAY more subtle than this and still provide an easy read.

Thanks for sharing this, Jarek. Tip: don't use '10' to represent 'ten'. As in this video, if you see the curve of the '0' but don't see the '1' - really easy to do, unless you are looking at the cards so intently that it immediately becomes obvious to everyone present that the cards are marked - you end up confidently declaring that the card is a '9'. Use 'X' for '10' and that problem goes away. Other tip: close-up magic people number them the way Jarek does, with the readable orientation closest to you. Everyone else does it the other way, so the readable orientation is across the tops of the cards other people are holding.

This was the first time I ever heard of marked decks, and I thought, "100$!! Guess I'm never getting a marked deck." I thought this was the only type of a marked deck

Just my point... I started using glasses a few years ago, and the regular marking system for the bicicleta deck is hard without glasses, but I guess this one should be perfect for people with some people like me... the cards, but I guess in live situation that could work. Good... getting old and having options.... although I still think it kind of expensive for ocasional use like in my case. I'd love to try a similar formula to see how it works.... I might even try something back home and experiment on a few bee cards.... let's say.. the jokers. ;-)

if you really want to get into marked decks, and have poor eyesight, why not learn a different marking concept entirely... tactile marking system (I.e. marks you feel rather than see). Edge work, and punch dealing - look into those :)

Understand something first, you can't see it cause the camera is in focus. Even if you unfocused your eyes, you are still looking at a focused camera, so you won't be able to see it

Juicing cards is easy... train your eyes and use a clock system

What are the major differences between a Juice deck and a Luminous deck?

a juice deck has markings on that you need to throw your eyes out of focus to read (the point of juice is to give a broad, super-slight variation on the back of the deck - looking 'through' the card condenses the broad line into something thinner and hence readable). it's a tricky concept to explain in print but hopefully you get the idea. A luminous deck requires special glasses or contact lenses to reveal the marks as the ink floureses in a wavelength that you just can't see without the gimmick. Back in the day, the early versions of these were sold with red-lens glasses, which were a bit of a massive giveaway, but modern technology has intervened since then... There's an Asian company that make the best ones (can't remember the name, sorry), but they are top notch and retail for *serious* money. HTH

Juice by is a lot cheaper, and a lot more flexible (you can mark up a few decks and sell them to recoup some costs!). Luminous decks (the high end ones) are things of true beauty, but at that price they are special occasion only cards - in fact there are extremely few scenarios they would be genuinely useful... Get juice.
