Truth about Coolers- YETI 20 VS Igloo BMX 25 VS Old RED
Ойын-сауық
I did a five day ice challenge vs the Yeti 20 vs Igloo BMX vs Old Red Igloo Island Breeze. I thought this was a fun test to see what the ice retention truly was. Here is my opinion of some of the Pros and Cons of these cooler ideas.

I got an Old Blue, that has been in the back of my truck for the past three years. Holds ice for a day and a half, so if I get ice Saturday morning, I've still got a slushie by Sunday afternoon to throw some fish in. Its been beaten, abused, used as a poling platform, used as a cutting board, and used as a camera tripod. It has seen its fair share of pompano, trout, and reds. For $19, I would by it again in a heartbeat. I just would not be able to leave a more expensive cooler in my truck bed and not be a nervous wreck.
I’ve got a ol red too and my handle done the same thing! Easy to fix it’ put the handle back where it goes and drill a 1/4” hole through the center where it attaches to the cooler all the way through to the inside, get you a couple 1/4” stainless bolts,4 Stainless fender washers and 2 self locking nuts! Handle won’t come off again! 😎 Like my old red, but I love my Yeti’s, Orcas and Rtics!
NICE! IF I'm going through the Sahara desert, Ima take a YETI. If Ima goin fishin in the bay, Ima goin IGLOO !!! Thanx for the work Bro!

Yep. How often do you need to keep ice for 4 or 5 days?
Thanks for the vid on these coolers. I would have bought that size Yeti, but many commented how the drain plug leaks and when they got a replacement, it leaked as well! I went with the Igloo BMX 25 because we used the BMX 52 recently while camping in 90 degree days and the ice lasted for three days or more; we only topped it off with another bag on day three because we had a lot of food in it. Very pleased with the BMX models!!
Took my modified "Ol Red" (inspired by Yak) out to Ft Monroe today. Kept all my beer, soda, and water... ice cold all day... thanks

My favorite middle of the road coolers are the new ones by Lifetime. They are in that $60 price range, but they feel better made than the nice igloo, almost on par with the Yeti, and they seem like they will last about as long, but time will tell
Thanks for the review!! I like the mid range price cooler!! Oh by the way was at the beach and took ur advice and buried the cooler I couldn’t believe how great that works
"my closet looks like a small arms race " that's priceless !
Just about blown off the PCB pier just now. I saw that igloo at Buckees for 69 I believe. Looks solid and I need a new boat cooler. Thanks for the review.
Got both, Yeti Tundra 45 and the modified Igloo Outdoorsman and use which ever occasion calls for.
Sounds like good test to me ,thanks for the show
I"ve seen some people put rubberized tape around the rim of the lid to give it a better seal (regarding the Igloo). Have you thought of trying some further modifications?
So I've been watching cooler videos for the last couple days. Who the heck "PRE-chills" a cooler anyway. I've never thought to put ice in my cooler, and "pre chill" it for a day before I drain it and put ice in FOR REAL THIS TIME, and then fill it with my stuff. I don't like the ridiculous tests, and this was a REAL ice test. Thanks Yak.
Love my YETI, can’t be beat, still chilling after the others failed!
I've got a 50qt. YETI but hardly use it. I have a few 20qt. less expensive coolers that I use regularly. Great comparison video! 👍
Great video man keep up the great work!!!!
A very simple test for cooler quality is to put a bright lantern(about 300 lumens) inside the cooler with the lid closed. If you can see light through the cooler it’s junk. If the cooler is properly insulated you shouldn’t see any light through it.
Had my YETI 20 on the sand all last week in the Perdido sun...kept ice and beer ready to go! Mid range igloo looks legit though...
For the price of a Yeti I bought an Alpicool c15 electric compressor cooler. Really really hate searching for ice while camping. Yeah, I've got a solar panel too. The cooler is small, but none of the space is taken up with ice so usable space is good. Also, no soggy food.
👍👍 Enjoyed the comparison Yak, I'm agreeing w/u and going with the mid-range igloo. 4 days is plenty 4 mr!!
You can still get a 48 qt cooler for $16 at academy. Yeah, anything over a day, maybe that new igloo. But for throwing fish into it on the beach I don’t mind the cheapies
The thing I was disappointed to find out recently is that while most of Igloo's coolers are made in the U.S. their current line of roto-mold style coolers are made in China.
Now you have to put a 12 pack in there and go to the beach on a hot day with two people drinking and see how the ice holds up . And don’t empty the ice out or water then when you get home put 6 beers in out in the sun for a day . Can I use it the next day without getting ice ?
Love both of my BMX coolers!
Thanks for filming
Love it!!! I’m down here in Ft.Walton and you should of been at the pier over at okaloosa island bro!!! Straight killin them Spanish and Bonita’s. Crazy thing bro, is the tarpon didn’t show. St least while I w as there. Some reds cruising the shore. Totally wish you were here!!!!
I just bought that exact same yeti.We like to pack the boat the night before with food to barbeque and drinks. With the heat wave I broke down and bought one.Hands down most durable and keeps ice the longest.I understand worrying about it getting stolen but my marina has cameras on every dock and great security. The biggest con for me is they are heavy for my wife to move around so we just throw it in a dock cart.
How about a comparison of soft sided Yeti/RTIC/etc. to their hard shell versions?
Just a question for you did the yeti have a drain plug you had open in it all the time during the test?
@dlarremore
3 жыл бұрын
Yes there was definatly less ice, but no water 🤔
My 48 quart Igloo cooler was made in 1986...leaks a little, but still going strong
I don't use Yetis anymore after switching to Engel but the white yetis hold ice longer than the darker colored ones. Same with any cooler though.
Yeti vs RTIC = Ultimate... RTIC is YETI without the showing off and trying to impress people...lol

I would like to see this one.
I did the spray foam trick on my igloo wheelie 42. Yes it worked. Just had to be careful otherwise it will inflate like a balloon
we had a coleman cooler when i was kid back in 70s and we had it for years
Everytime you open the cooler, you let in hot air and then trap the hot air in there with the ice, when you close the lid. You also didn’t fill them up completely. Air is the biggest killer of ice. Pelican says not to drain their cooler, as cold water is better than hot air. Also, Pelican coolers have a small gap in the gasket, to let out hot air, as hot air rises. I thought it was a defect, but it actually works. Try pre-chilling it the night before, then fill completely full of ice, and then open them after 5 days and see what the results are.
Damn that yeti cooler was doing the job to the best. It’s the best. Kinda worth it if your out there every day using it.
I bought the Igloo BMX 25 in green and orange and I love it.
I like my old school metal coleman, retro some may have no clue what that is, great video BTW.
Good video Jack. I buy cheap ol' red type coolers at Goodwill or thrift stores for $3 or $4. What I would do, to maybe keep it from getting stolen is find a cheap second hand cooler the Yeti or new Igloo will fit inside. I will be modifying my cheap second hand cooler and adding a lid latch. Thanks for sharing your truth about coolers comparison with us!
I can stand and sit on my yeti roadie cooler. I use it as a step stool sometimes, or even a stool when I'm camping
I bought a "performance" cooler to take out on the kayak. After the first trip, I went to walmart and picked up a big soft cooler. The weight and limited internal volume of the expensive coolers aren't worth it for a day on the water.
Bought a white Igloo BMX 52qt at Target last year for $80. Great value. Price is around $90-100 now. Just be careful you don't lose the plastic pins that hold the handles on.
Hi there I watched your video on cleaning up headlights and I have found that if you use a compound polish you will get a great finish but it will need a little ankle grease and then a little cut and polish and it will be as good as new
Great video bud very good info I’ll take the mid range cooler it did well for 70 bucks

Nice video dude. I bought the new Yeti 24 while I was watching.... They are just too cool to pass up. Regardless, nice job on the video.
Ozark Trail from Wally World about same size as your Yeti. Keeps everything cold for days...Dont recall what I paid, but it does the job for me.
I use the igloo bmx and find with frozen milk jugs bait stays good a few days. I live on the water and fish daily. I was using a cheap cooler and needed more ice daily.
While the Yeti & RTIC are clearly better coolers, it's the weight that keeps me from buying one. I only need to keep ice for the weekend and would like to be able to pick up a 50 quart cooler full of ice, drinks & food by myself. I'm not sure I could carry a full Yeti/RTIC to the boat and then load it by myself without getting hurt. It's easier and cheaper to just buy another bag or two of ice the next day. Whatever the choice, you always make the videos enjoyable.
Good test, I guess it all depends on what you are doing with it, but in a in a hurricane situation, I think the yeti is the way to go!
Thanks for review
My Yetis are second to none. I had one for about 3 years and currently bought one with wheels to wheel when going to the beach. I spent 400 bucks on it but it's worth every penny. I have the money so it's no issue spending it on a quality product. I tried Rtic, Pelican, and others but nothing matched the Yeti products. Yeti all the way and I don't see myself replacing the coolers I got anytime soon.
@seabass22

Lazy Reefer except countless youtube videos prove that the yeti isn’t any better than the other coolers. I have an original Rtic and the build quality rivals yeti. I have a newer rtic, maybe a year or two old, and the quality was lacking. I have a Pelican 30 qt and it is great. Holds ice for a really long time, even out in the heat and sun. I really want a reef blue yeti though. If they were still made in the USA, I would get one. My next one, if I were to get another, would probably be a KONG. Check them out.

Once the yeti is full of ice or beer or whatever, it's too heavy for most people to carry. I'm a 170 lbs male and have a hard time picking up even an empty yeti!
@JamesBriano
3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I'd like to see a weight comparison and the "feel" of carrying them. I picked up an empty Igloo (same model as in the review) and was surprised at how heavy it was-these ain't your grandma's coolers. That skinny Yeti handle looks like it might dig into the hands once it's loaded up.
Try the yeti ice packs..... I put one in a cheaper soft waterproof cooler and its worked great. Thanks for the video and keep them up
I cant decide whether to purchase the igloo box 25 or rtic same size.. by the way, I love your big green egg! I have the xl and it's awesome!
I've had one just like ol red for about 5 years except it orange it's a beast and was cheap for day trips car shows fishing it's been great and for $20 from the dollar store you just can't beat the price. I just can't bring myself to to spend that much on a cooler like the yeti but I'm cheap. When I'm camping it's always with electric so I bring my mini fridge lol I have a toy hauler so it rolls right in. Lol
You did.a good job on your test for all your "aw shucks" manner. I use them a little differently. Take any cooler--put the ice in smaller plastic bags (the gallon slider bags do very well). After each day drain off the water. I've had a super cheap type Igloo ice last for a couple days in hot weather. I am not sure why but I think draining off water which is warmer, keeps the ice from melting in the surrounding warmer water. It has the added benefit--if you like iced drinks because the ice stays clean.
Nice experiment where we can benefit. I can see the Yeti (or comparable) for those people that might have to endure a long power outage. But, for most purpose, the mid-range is fine for me. As far as durability goes, you can get three of the mid-range for slightly more than the expensive one, so in the long run, you save money.
Captain Yak, I been hearing rumors about a hot-shot fisherman from Clearwater Fl who goes by the name "ZENU". I don't know what kind of tackle he has but he uses "thetans" for bait ...... ever hear of him ?
I have cheap coolers and then I got a big Ozark trail cooler for free ✊🏻 still use my cheap no stress coolers daily🤷🏼♂️
The Igloo is not a competitor to the Yeti. The Yeti competitor is the Waterloo HP Lite or Carbon Mag. If I have $300-400 to spend on a Yeti Tundra 35-40, then I would have to weigh the option of spending that money on a better rod and reel. I don't own a hard cooler Yeti, but I definitely see their value besides just holding ice. It is a tabletop for cleaning fish, a step stool, an extra seat, a sight casting platform, a temporary safe, etc.
If the Igloo was 20 quarts how do you think it would've done? Maybe add more ice to compensate for the additional air space! Any thoughts? Thanks!
I also had ole red for yrs found it in the woods full of beers best coolie ever
I want one of those Yeti Roadies, but I’m just too cheap..lol.. Great Video Jack!!
yep, buy the cheaper cooler, no one steals it, AND. .you have money left over for beer, dew, munchies, fishing gear, etc. 🤔😊😎 Good video, again.👍

Hey could you recommend a cooler for my paddle board? I plan on using it as the seat. Thanks just recently subscribed and I am inspired to do some offshore fishing in my paddle board
What about the Walmart ozark trail cooler verses yeti.
i liked the video but where was the melt water for the yeti im guessing drain plug loose and allowing water to drain i might be wrong but i didnt see any melt water and i noticed the ice getting smaller
Late to the party but you gotta do the math. A Tundra 35 Yeti costs 19 1/4 Natty suitcases. If your beer's getting hot, you're doing it wrong. Going on an expedition? Get the good cooler. Day trips truck bed, and backyard bbq, the cheap one.
How often do you need the ice to last 5 days? I mainly do day trips the ice only needs to last the day or a little longer. I can buy a lot of ice for the price difference.
Good vid yak but next time let the ice run its course sir 😉. Please do a showdown between the bmx and a lifetime of similar size and price and maybe throw in a Ozark trail brand of similar.
YAK, who is removing the water from the yeti and why have they not removed all of the water from the igloo.. just a question and I have a lot of cooler experience and commercial fishing in my back ground..
Do a test with the igloo IMX coolers
You did some good politicking for old red but she failed you. I know it's hard but that igloo is sexy as hell.
Which one will get stolen out the back of a truck first?
You did a good test, and I enjoyed it but... WHY DIDN"T YOU RUN THE TEST TO THE END? We would really have liked to see how long until all the ice melted on each cooler! How many days would it have lasted?
@YakMotley
5 жыл бұрын
The video would be beyond long
And leaving a yeti in the Back of truck could be risky. Someone might help them selves
Who needs to keep ice for 4 or 5 days anyway? Would bet that number would be pretty few. I just want to keep it for longer than an afternoon. Sounds like the new Igloo would be the way to go for most. What was the deal with the larger one though?
Straight up agree, why spend sooo much when a meiodoker will serve the purpose and save some green for some cold ones. It'll probably just get stolen anyway.
Nice review, my vote goes to the Yeti just because of the durability. I figure yeti will last me for years with 4 kids.
Yak, Let's be real, how many times have used the same ice more than one day? I think that coolers that keep cold for two days are great; three days and I would be telling all of my friends. Every cooler that I've owned has become rather stinky long before it wore out. I would much prefer a cooler that didn't become odoriferous after a few uses than one that was built to last a life time. Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming.
I would go with the igloo cooler for sure.
How about an ozark trailers cooler test?
I got the 26 qt Ozark trail one for 50$ brand new I love it
That Igloo looks pretty cool, might have to get me one.
