As an avid boater, I’ve had many alloy boats under 4m to complement my Haines for different fishing. It surprises me how dealers don’t use Duralac when screwing or bolting things on the hull to prevent corrosion. I build small Vans Aircraft as a hobby….. we use Duralac every time I bolt a metal screw or bolt onto aluminium .

Yeah agree. It's disappointing. Probably a combo of laziness and lack of knowledge.either way, the amount of alloy boats I see only a few years old going to crap is shocking.

Don't forget to ensure you sacraficial zinc anodes are replaced before they are too corroded. These are sacrificed on purpose to save the aluminium. Normally they're attached to the outboard motor on boats less than 7m in length, with larger sailing cats having extra ones attached in multiple locations on the hull.

I had an old fyran 440 runabout.riveted aluminium boat. That had corrosion in the hull that made pin holes right though the hull and trying to weld it it was too hard. So I had to buy a new plate aluminium boat with 4mm bottom and 4 sides. I tell you what. Don’t be scared to use salt away and make sure it’s dry before you put it away in the shed or carport.

Good video. If pitting has just started on a 5month old ally boat can it be stopped?? I’ve just noticed it on mine and am wandering if I can stop it from causing further corrosion. Two weeks after i last used my boat I noticed salt sitting on the surface. I pulled it out to rinse it with water and noticed pitting. I’ve never washed my boat with soap I have only rinsed it. I didn’t realise how much maintenance was required after each use. The pitting is very shallow and I’d be happy if there is a way to treat it and stop it.

There isn't really a way to stop it. All you can do is keep it as dry as possible after usage. Unfortunately alloy boats don't last anywhere near as long as many people believe. And dealers etc either don't know or tell you how to care for the boats properly. Don't stress, just start washing with salt away type product after usage and keep dry. Can also spray innox on those spots.

Always good idea to check the grade ally your boat is being made of. I know mclay one of few only that use 5083 and nylic finish

Yep but even 5083 there are different qualities apparently. Depending on where it comes from

I have an aluminum bass boat. I had battery acid escape inside my boat bilge area and leave white spots all over the Aluminum. I took out all 3 batteries and dumped baking soda all over the place. Then scrubbed and rinsed. Several times. The spots fizzed upon the first application of baking soda. But no longer fizzed after that when I reapplied the baking soda. So, I think I neutralized the acid. However, the white spots are still all over the aluminum. Would this be expected?

Yeah man I wouldn't worry about it. Could try some heavy cutting compound to polish it out. But main thing is you removed the battery acid. Things unfortunately can't stay looking new for ever.

After watching your video, I did more research on internet. I can see ppl installing anodes on their metal boat to help with electrolysis. Do you have anode on your previous BC or any other alloy boats you have owned in the past?

Not that I have noticed tbh.... But coukd be a good idea

I have a 2018 Quintrex Freestyler which I put approximately 120hrs on each year. I love the boat as its perfect for the Gippsland lakes but she is starting to have alot of paint issues. I wanted to respray and freshen up the hull in the next year or two, or wait another 5-6 years when I'll be looking to also bolt on another outboard. What's your opinion? Would I be wasting my time?

It depends what the paint issues are and if there is electrolysis under there. If yes, I'd be addressing sooner rather than later or even selling. If nothing to do with corrosion and purely just a looks thing, I wouldn't worry at all and do it when ever you see fit.....

@Ri Ra I'm having paint issues around almost all fittings and fasteners. The paint has also cracked on the boarding steps. The boat is always washed after use. The top sides are basically perfect. All issues are from the gunnel upwards

Do you know if you need special tools and certain skills to apply nyalic or it can be a DIY job?

I haven't done it. But have seen some others doing it online. It's bloody awesome and all plate boats should have it. Gotta be super clean and acid washed before application.

I wonder if paint protection like ceramic coating would help with some of the problems

Honestly don't know, but the issues more relate to how it binds to the aluminium. Which is never great for some reason

@@BaitBallin Ceramic would be great if you did it to a brand new boat that wasn't coated with anything from the factory. You'd literally have to buff or sand the entire thing, then use $300 worth of solvent to clean everything and then apply another $900 or ceramic coating. LOL Nobody ever thinks to use that car ceramic stuff on other things. I took the leftover ceramic coating from my new wheels on my car and I applied it to a new toilet in my step-sons bathroom! LOL It worked, not sure how long it'll last but the poops just slide right down the toilet.

I am repairing a old aluminum boat. Lots of corroded spots and old screw holes that I need to fill. I’m guessing a tig welder would be best for this application. Is there a better or best grade of aluminum for this type of repair?

Well marine grade would be good. Thin alloy is very hard to weld without burning bigger holes. Even plate boat builders recommend sealing small pin holes with Araldite rather than welding, no joke. Anyway let me know how it goes

If it's a jon boat it's probably not alloy? I wouldn't bother buying a tig welder just to fill screw holes. Get some of that low temperature aluminum soldering rod. You can weld aluminum and cast aluminum with it, using a propane torch. You aren't welding anything structural, just filling a hole so I don't see why you couldn't use the aluminum solder stuff. Look it up. I used it to fill the holes around the gunwales from rod holders and other stuff people screwed to the boat.

Have you noticed that spilled oil in your bilge prevents corrosion in this area?

Yeah same principle as spraying innox on surfaces. Will also reduce corrosion

Sinkers dropped down into the the bottom of the hull will eat right through.

Good video again. Had a 6 meter name brand pressed alloy boat. Looked after it like a first born child. The wiring was average and the boat was the earth,electrolysis started under the paint on all fittings. So disappointed bought a glass boat. Fully welded gunnels is a must also in a painted aluminium boat.

Yeah man it happens all the time and people just aren't educated enough etc a d dodgy wiring is common place even from dealers. Yep, with glass boats, it's a bloody headache but I can honestly repair any issue basically

Wash your boat after every use and never leave it in the weather. even the acidity in rain will destroy an alloy boat.
