Trusting God in the Dark

www.truthforlife.org || By: Alistair Begg - Everyone experiences disappointment or sadness to some degree. In Psalm 13, David demonstrated what it means to trust God in tough times. Feeling forgotten, forsaken, sorrowful, and subdued, David cried out for God’s consideration and illumination. As he prayed, his perspective changed, and he was able to rejoice-even though his circumstances remained the same. Alistair Begg teaches that when we face difficult times, we must resist self-pity, trusting that God knows what’s best for us and can use even our hard experiences for good.

Having been paralyzed for close to four (4) years now, I struggle quite a bit and many tears have flowed...I have never been closer to the Father than I have been these last few years..I trust his reasoning and if my condition benefits another person in anyway...So be it...My children certainly don't take as many things for granted and I tell them that if the Son of God can endure a whipping and nailing to the Cross for me, then I can handle anything He asks of me...Great sermon as always, Pastor Begg.

Please look for Joni Erikson Tada. I think I spelled Erikson wrong. She has been paralyzed most of her adult life. She is a wonderful Christian lady and has all sorts of help and camps and support to offer. Just search her name on youtube. She has been on other ministries as a guest. She sings like an angel. And she is honest about the good and the bad. I think she will bless you.

I have been in the slough of dispondency Now I am nearly paralyzed KM I’m not angry with god. But I’m saddened by my experience with the shallowness of the church, but I don’t know the death of pain that others experience So I lay in bed all day - now about 10 days. No hope. Amen! I was taken down with immune system Dysfunctions, in 1997. I was 47 yrs. old; still young and a healthcare worker. I had Christian background, in churches since a child, thought I was saved and, knew my life wasn’t right. This time began many years of pain, struggle and heartache. It also brought me back to my knees (not literal, as I couldn’t kneel anymore). Life is still hard for me, but each day I have assurance Christ is with me, I trust Him more and more! 🙏🧡🙏

Please pray for my wife Adriana and I. She’s been wandering and turned from the Lord, running to sin as opposed to our Lord and Savior. I trust God will bring her back, heal our marriage, bring full restoration according to His enduring love and mercy. I wait upon the Lord expectantly! Please pray for her to return to the Lord and for our marriage in Jesus’ mighty name! That the demonic strongholds, demonic influences, shackles of sin be broken in Jesus name, according to His perfect timing. May He develop what’s necessary in me during this painful trial for His glory, for His purpose, for His plan! She says, “Let Him keep coming after me. I need that because I won’t go back to Him on my own”. I know the power of prayer and the God I serve. There is no mountain too big!! Thank you all, love you.

God has truly had his hand on her. I’m 55 and as I get older I can look back and see how God has moved thru my life. Now I’m watching and feeling it play out in front of me. Jesus is the ONLY way. Don't be fooled by thinking you can outweigh your bad deeds with your good deeds. Don't be fooled by thinking you'll be reincarnated to something else. Don't be fooled with false prophets, who are inwardly ravenous wolves. The only way to the Father is thru the Son. Trust in Christ, put your hope in Him and Him alone. You cannot save yourselves, only He can save you. Turn from your sin and repent. May God have mercy on you.

This message is just what I needed to hear, for I've been in this state of mind for years and was at a place of not wanting to pray, go to church or read the word. There was no hope, joy, just emptiness. Now after hearing your message and seeing what David and Hannah went through, and how in the end they trusted in God. I to will put my trust in, and look towards My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I'm so glad that the Lord woke me up this morning. I left my bible down in my car and was to lazy to go and get it. So I felt to go on the computer and read the bible, then when I turned it on your name came to mind. And when I got to your KZread channel, this message was the first one I saw, and I believe the Lord had me listen to it. I was truly blessed by this message, you addressed every thing that I was going through. May God continue to bless you and your ministry. Thank you

I have felt so defeated and sorrowful for my husband. Your statements of the impact of depression and where to turn and how to not change the circumstances but the impact in the face of things. The only way to change one’s perspective is to face God and see his strong loving face and know that everything is sorted in Jesus. Jesus knew me when He died and one needs to let that sink in - an unprecedented fact. By the way, my 25yr old son listens to you probably daily as he delivers meat around the north of England and into Scotland. Thank you, you helped him to see his situation in life and his prospects as a Christian and accept that salvation. My son in law is bipolar so I do feel for you Denise. Just do the best you can. In July we are having our second grandchild. It is possible this baby could be bipolar too because it can be passed down to the children. We will love this bipolar child and if he or she has troubles we will always point the child to Christ who loves us. Never forget His sacrificial love for you on the Cross. It could be your bipolar condition is something that will be your cross to bear. Now do the best you can to take medicine you need. There is nothing wrong with taking pills for this condition. Just as I take Lisinopril for high blood pressure, you take medicine to combat this. My sister had a husband who was bipolar. One mistake he made was to think that he didn't need the medicine. Then he also did street drugs which in my view messed his nervous system up so that when he took his medicine it didn't work properly. Ok, you don't need the story of my life. I was touched by your post. May the peace of Christ be with you.

Sweetheart, I so fully understand. I remember the same time in my life. And when I would have to go out, and I would have to carry a wad of paper towels to wipe the sweat off of the back of my head, and the side of my face. I had memorized Psalm 121, verses 7, and 8. and I would repeat those as I had to go out. It doesn't immediately take all the sweating, and anxiety away but as time went on, I got stronger. It will not happen over night, but after time, you will find yourself getting stronger, and their will be good days, and days that you still struggle, but I know in time you will really start to defeat that which wants to try, and defeat you, you as a believer have to much to offer others, and as you go out, ask God to put someone in your path that you can offer a word of encouragement, or offer to just open the door for someone, help an older lady put her groceries in her trunk. Fight, fight with God's word no matter how you feel, and remember feelings are not reality, but the truth of God's word is... Sorry so looking winded, but I do understand... Be patient with the process, and yourself.. Most of all each time you go out, get on your knees before God, and ask for His strength, and each time you come home, thank God that He did it again.. He brought you back home safely... You will get stronger. It's easy to stay home, but much harder to handle that defeat...

Great message. My only critical remark would be, people who are in despair are not wanting to be there... There is no perverse sense of self pity... People experiencing overwhelming grief and despair would only feel further condemned in their struggle against it, by such a thought or consideration. The toughest battle field of the soul, is in the experience of deep feelings of despair, helplessness, hopelessness. Such feelings mean an individual is in the midst of all out spiritual warfare... They are doing all they can to seek and to trust God when everything in their life is conspiring to destroy their hearts/minds/spirits.

Sometimes we can become addicted to our feelings, especially if we are able to justify those feelings. I've done it. I have seen many others stuck on their feelings too. Alistair is saying that you don't have to live in those "feelings". God changed that for the Psalmist in Psalm 13:5 & 6.

Cat Espinoza Yes, I understand and accept what you are saying. This is true, too. Yet, there are situations where a person has a serious mental health issue going on and this needs to be watched for. While I believe God can and does answer prayer and delivers his people from all evil, a pastor should be mindful of mental health concerns such as clinical depression. Clinical depression is not something a person can convince themselves that what they are experiencing is just feelings. All though in keeping with your line of thought, there are many people in our modern culture are unable to separate themselves from their feelings. Their feelings are them.

Candi O'Neil I am glad you have Jesus...who is our risen Saviour...conquering sin and death and hell. Yes, mental health issues can make life extremely challenging. I hope you have good support in your life... family, church, professional counsellor. Jesus can and will heal mental health issues... but, it requires a tremendous amount of energy on the part of the sufferer... Sometimes people come into faith so broken and exhausted with trauma and mental health concerns... that they really can’t muster much...in the way of internal resources..physically, emotionally, and mentally to combat severe depression. Then, for such a person, the spiritual component has to be unraveled and understood...before there can be headway made. When I was young, I had two significant mental breakdowns...(one as a believer...which drove me to despair, because the lens of deep depression ... interpreted my experience as an indication that I must not have genuine faith...or that I was so broken...that God had given up on me...and I gave up on myself...) I came a hairs breath from self homicide ...my self loathing was so profound. Yet, God in His goodness and grace heard my desperate cries for salvation...and it took a long time...but, my mental health has stabilized. Eventually, I went to pastors, therapists, group therapy, read books like crazy...and took medication... This process took a long, long time...which other believers did not understand. But, God did! I give glory to God...for His unfailing love, but, having said that...I do understand how and why people sink into deep despair ... and feel hopeless. God has used these realities to enable me to help, support and advocate for troubled young people who are just starting their life journey...hopefully, so they don’t end up in the condition I did.... Blessings and may God grant your mustard seed of faith...to grow into a mighty tree.

I think one thing you should be careful of is differentiating between self pity and someone being completely broken having gone through things you can’t even imagine. Be careful in your wording. Trusting God certainly does not mean you will be helped, things turn around. It’s in his plan, even if that means your continued pain, suffering, death. I trust in God’s plan and His will. I know God exists. But I don’t trust that this means I will be helped. I’ve got up many times from awful things. Eventually you get so beaten you can’t get up and too old for life to hold any hope, time runs out, not for want of trying. Life is not a fairytale
