Back in the early 1980’s I built a Sea Wolf Class sub with cutaways in the hull. There were no figures. That was back when every super market sold plastic models and paints and supplies. Now you’re lucky to find plastic models at a hobby shop.

Keith Whisman got that right!! When I was a kid in the 80’s..you could totally get all those things at any supermarket..additionally there were several proper hobby shops in town.. Nowadays?? There are two “Hobbytown USA” franchise locations..both locations primarily sell gaming items and billiard supplies with some models in the back.

For those that are wondering I did see a chap on you tube adding lights in detail to the same sub, but you’ll have to surf because I don’t remember who. It really made a 100% world of difference. I wouldn’t attempt it without the mini led lamps. He added a red emergency light in one section. I would have added both options. I also noticed that the model had opening along the bulkheads for the expectation of adding wiring for lighting, and the keel has a square hole molded in for a switch.

Wow, that looks just fantastic! Since I've seen Das Boot in the eighties for the first time I'm fond of the type VII U boats. Not because of the harm they've done, but because how well they were build and controlled by their crews. Maybe I'm gonna build this one too, but I think I've to wait until one of my daughters leaves the house. This model needs an extra room to build. Not the standard kit you can build on your kitchen table. Looking forward to see the progress :)

That is incredible! I enjoyed you run through of the parts and other fiddly bits of this model..I can't wait to see the progression of building her. Unfortunately that's way, way above my head (mostly in patience) to build such an epic project, I usually build either airplanes or cars, but I'm fascinated in how you go about it. When I see such a model as this, I immediately think of different variations of completion, one of course is to simply build it and display it in the usual fashion. One of the variables is to build the inside and display it as a testament to the brave crew and the ship herself..and the hull as a separate entity, and instead do an undersea diorama of what she'd look like after being sunk, and sitting on the bottom for 60 plus years(that way you don't need to waste the insides, but can display the hull whole, and holed.:). That way you've actually got two models instead of one. But..its up to you, either way, it should be most interesting. Thanks for letting me have my say.. Jon, modeler for many years.

LOL when you had a shot of the open boxes on the desk and then this tiny hand appeared I was like "WOAH!" HOly cow. That thing is going to be ENORMOUS. Beautiful detailing on the clear hull though, looks gorgeous. I think that thing is an actual intentional feature not an ejector mark, I am pretty sure there was a similar circular thing on my 1/72 VIIIC. I'm loving the fact that the decking is moulded into the hull parts, that is genius. I'M LOOKING AT YOU, REVELL. Yeah, giving you the stink-eye right royally. Those figures look like real nice sculpts, nice and crisp. Painting them will be ten episodes in of itself! You're a valve-handle ^_^ I am SO looking forward to this!

For people in the States, U-505 is at the museum of science and industry in Chicago, IL. You can walk through it and take pictures. Although, it is a type IX C. On another note, I understand why people do not like the swastika. But when you can't even have it on a historical model? That is simply ridiculous, and against all forms of free speech. Someone should be able to literally walk down any street with a swastika flag. Of course they are also rightly subject to criticism for such. Just my opinion.

A Type VII U-boat in 1:48 scale? Holy smoke! That’s a huge model! I built the Revell Type VII U-boat and the US Gato class submarine in 1:72 scale and they were big. But this 1:48 U-boat exceeds them all and is one hell of a huge model! I’ll get it too! I also hope that Trumpeter makes a 1:48 scale USN Gato or Balao class subs also.

Beautiful kit... but the only criticism I have is that I wish they had included TWO of the diesel engines, instead of only one. The clear side expose of the interior should have been able to show the ENTIRE interior -- not just a single side. If I build this kit I will need to scratchbuild the additional engine. Will probably do so though, because it will be worth the effort.
