Have you ever asked a trumpet player to record with "a mute"? Did you know that there are dozens of mutes that trumpet players use? Here's a demo of the most common types of mutes. Maybe you were thinking of a different one!
All trumpet sounds recorded on a 1966 Conn Connstellation through a Shure SM81. Minimal compression added, no other effects or EQ added.

    This is so great! I just got a copper mute and I love the stem. It's so old timey. But also it could be an intriguing substitute for a wah pedal. So funny that it's called a "wow-wow" mute, I always thought it was a wah-wah lol

    I play in a Big Band, and we call wah-wah mute basically a Harmon mute with the stem. It's very rare indeed. I've also seen "Tin mute" on sheets. My band leader made me play a harmon mute with a stem to get a metallic sound that goes out, I don't really know what I was really supposed to use.
