About ten years ago I was trying to emulate Miles' 1980s sound. I found out from someone who worked at Holton that he had got them to substantially deepen his mouthpieces so that when he was using the clip on radio microphone it had lots of extra low end. The microphone and transmitter didn't do that too well. Just thought I would mention it as its another kind of microphone.

Awesome lesson. I was wondering why when I used the mute it didn’t sound like Davis at all, this definitely helps in getting closer!

I am a huge Miles fan and love this video. Any chance you could do a video on how to ghost notes like Miles does?

I love harmon mute sound, but getting the mic'ing situation right for live gigs is always so hard. It's usually either too quiet or, if I get right into the mic, it's super shrill. I've been using a Trumcor Zinger bubble mute which has a great tone, but is naturally a little louder.

Love your videos Bob! I share your love of Miles Davis! Any chance you could do a video on mouthpiece choice please? How much should a trumpeter chop n change mouthpiece, or stick to the same mouthpiece? Thanks 👍🎺❤️

Great content as always! Have you got any thoughts on practicing with harmon mutes and back pressure? I find I need to be hyper vigilant of over blowing or I tire my embouchure out way too quick.

Hey Bob - when I use a Harmon I need to pull tuning slide out to stay in tune. Is that expected/common?

you are actually still too far from the mic-you have to get right up on it if you are looking for the classic Miles tone...
