Ойын-сауық
Today we take a look at the 1/2 HP version of the 9 Inch disc sander from trugrit after a year of use in the knife shop. Is it worth the $815 price tag? Would I buy it again? Check out the video for my thoughts and what I would buy today!

*** Word around the campfire, from someone I believe would know, is he's fine but had to return to the steady income of a full time job with the baby and all the financial responsibilities that family entails. Jsut thought I'd post this as I'm sure I'm not the only one missing the videos. Maybe some day he'll be back. Still a great resource regardless. Thanks Mike!

@@mbrown121500 Sadly, I think he's gone for good. It's a shame, but that's life I guess. Just would have been nice to get a note so we know he's OK. It's funny how, though 'just some guy in a video', we can feel like he's a friend and we've lost that. But he owes us nothing really. I just wish him well.
Hey mike, are you still making knives? I'm sure I'd speak for a large majority when I say I love your content and would like to see an update!
Mike where you been? We miss you!
Im sure you didnt quit, we would all love to see you again mike! The only thing that could have stopped you is health. I hope your good
Come back brother, a video a week? A month? Doesn’t matter we need you back my man.
You got a shout out from Alec Steel. So, I came on over because he recommended your series on folding knives! Nice channel! Great work! I subscribed!

thank you very much for watching and supporting me!
Great review pal, it looks really nicely made
Mike, Nice video. You asked about other options. I discovered that I could hook up two motors to my KBAC 27D VFD. (Ed Caffrey has information on his website that tells you how to hook up the two motors to one VFD.) I then picked up a 9" steel disc with a 1 degree angle from Nathan Carothers (Nathan the Machinist), and bought a brand new 2hp, 3ph motor on eBay. I finally got it all set up and everything works great. You are correct though, sandpaper doesn't last long, and it's a PITA to change.
Another plus is that aluminium is non-magnetic, so you can use a magnet to hold your piece.
Mr Ekim again when looking for advise your site comes up and here we are. Thank you for the information because I know will get the 1 hp unit that if at some time I want to convert to 220v I can.
I'd kill to have a disc grinder that runs true lol... That one's seems really nice but no way could I justify the $800. Good to see a video from you Mike!
Your videos are amazing!
Man I wish you would come back exclamation The knife making world needs you
Mike come back!! What a great dude.. really hope your still making knives bud
Nice video, great review, you are the best

Nielsen has one with changeable discs so you can have different grit paper for each disc. And they make a 1 degree beveled disc so you can do long bowie or chefs knives without it grabbing the other side.
Mike has the best videos. Super detailed. Anyone know where he been?
Was watching a video that made me remember your channel! You still making knives? I really enjoy your content. I sincerely hope all is well with you and yours. Godbless.
Hey I’m a new knifemaker also from newyork your channel has been greatly helpful to me I’ve watched every one of your videos over the past couple weeks. I would love if you could do more videos of you making knives. Those videos are so informative and immensely appreciated. I really hope to see some new videos from you in the future!
Mike, we miss you brother! Hope you and the family are doing well!!
Checking back in.
Mike , I’m looking for you Too . You helped me get started , hope your OK .
Where’s Mike??? I’ve been wondering myself as to where you’ve been Mike… really looked forward to your videos when I first got your post on my page… and then…????
Mike where did you go? I just discovered your Channel a few weeks ago and I've been watching a ton of your content and just saw that you haven't made a video in over a year.
"I might slow down, I might speed up, but Im never quitting"
Hey, buddy, I really love your videos. I'm just curious. Why did you stop making them? Thanks a lot
Belmont metal works makes a 9" disk that has a 1 degree bevel which lets you work on longer piece's(when you cross the center it wont grab). The down side it everything you grind end up with a slight concave but its insignificant for most makers. Think they said of the width of a 2" blade you would have a concave that's .0001" basically your hand isn't able to hold it that flat anyway on a normal flat disk. Just thought id share.
I need some advice. I need a starter grinder that's inexpensive but will perform better than the harbor freight 1x30. I have used mine for about a year and a half, and it's just not got enough power. I have used it for knife making, and I also sharpen lawnmower blades for a couple for landscaping companies. I recently killed the 1x30, so I need to pick something up relatively quickly. I was going to get the craftsman 2x42 that you said you started with, but they are nowhere to be found.
Here ya go NEMA 1: For indoor use. Protects users against contact with hazardous components and protects the components from the ingress of solid objects, such as fingers and falling dirt. NEMA 2: For indoor use. Same as NEMA 1 but adds protection against the ingress of dipping and light splashing water. NEMA 3: For indoor or outdoor use. Same as NEMA 2 but adds stronger protection against the ingress of water and dust. It protects against windblown dust, rain, sleet, and snow and will be undamaged by ice forming on the enclosure. NEMA 3R: Same as NEMA 3 but without the protection against windblown dust. The standard doesn’t say this, but typically the difference is that there is no gasketing on NEMA 3R enclosures. NEMA 3S: Same as NEMA 3 but adds the provision that external mechanism remain operable when ice laden. NEMA 3X, NEMA 3RX, NEMA 3SX: the X signifies the addition of corrosion protection. NEMA 4: Same as NEMA 3 but adds protection against hose directed water. NEMA 4X: Same as NEMA 4 but adds protection against corrosion. NEMA 6: For indoor or outdoor use. Protects against the ingress of objects, fingers, and falling dirt, hose directed water and is undamaged by ice formation. What’s more, it protects against occasional temporary submersion to a limited depth. NEMA 6P: Same as NEMA 6 but adds protection of prolonged submersion to a limited depth and adds corrosion protection. NEMA 12: Protects against the ingress of objects, fingers, falling dirt, settling dust and drips. It is similar to NEMA 3 but it is for indoor use, so instead of protecting against windblown dust it protects against settling airborne dust, lint, fibers, and flyings. It won’t protect against rain, sleet, and snow, but it does protect against seeping oil and coolant as well as dripping and light splashing water. Despite the large number it is a basic level of protection. It may be helpful to think of it as NEMA 1.2 rather than NEMA 12. NEMA 13: Same as NEMA 12 but adds protection against oil and coolant splashing and spraying.
Dam man you had a great channel
Try 3M feathering adhesive instead of spray on. It let's you peel off the sheet easily and use it again later if it's still useful. Saves a ton of work removing old disks. 👍
Where are you? We want more vids, please! Mahalo from Hawaii!
Hey! Simple Little Life sent me here :)
Where did you go? We need you back
Where are you?? We miss your pretty face :) Hope all is well
Haven't heard from you in a LONG time brother where are you....
YESSSSSS
Yo mike! Where have you been? We all miss youuu
I just bought a KBAC NEMA 4 VFD, cause I'm sure one of my cheap Ebay models is gonna blow soon(they don't last, as you know). I've been thinking about buying another motor and making one of these(you know me, I gotta try to do it myself, haha), but I don't really know where I would put it, haha. Looking forward to seeing more videos. Take it easy.

all you need now is a 3 phase motor and one of their pre-made discs and you're good to go!

Yeah, I've seen a few places that have the disc for about $80-90. I just have to figure out if I want flat or beveled

Also, I've seen DB Blades run a switch off his VFD to run 2 machines. In theory, you could run both motors off of your NEMA 4, but I don't know about the 1/2 HP part.

Dave Erving Evader Knives - Check out the Nielsen Interchangeable Disc system. You can get multiple discs for it that can be easily attached and removed to the aluminum hub using magnets. www.nielsendesigndiscgrinder.com Fwiw, if you're only going to get one, I'd get a flat. It's all I have right now and can pretty easily be used to flatten the bevels on pretty much any size knife with the right technique. I was able the clean up the bevels on a 7" santoku I'm finishing up. Of course having a bit of distal taper on longer knives makes the gap between the blade and the "uphill" side of the disc face larger and thus a bit more friendly to grind. It takes a little getting used to but it works great.

+lsubslimed NICE, sounds like an awesome idea. I'll definitely check it out. Magnets are a great idea. I made doubler plates(Travis Wuertz idea) for my tool rest, that way i can slide them into any position. I have a few videos on it. I'll tell ya, if it wasn't for Mike(Ekim Knives) I would've probably never started making videos. Take it easy, thanks again.
Ekim! Come back!
Hi mike, do you have a website? How can we order one of your knives? Wtg 💪
Hey who do you use for heat treating your blades , I’m on O2 and can’t be around fire , thanks
I messaged him on Instagram and had a cool little conversation with him! It’s currently August of 2018 and he said he wants to return to KZread this coming fall!! Everyone should go over to his Instagram and send him a message telling him you miss his videos, he’s a cool dude!

Do you make any auto knifes or spring assisted?
AMK just came out with one for around 900. I think it's 1 1/2 horse with a work rest.
It has been 5 years, anyone know if Mike is all good? I really would love to get my hands on one of his knives. He made some awesome stuff. Hope he's doing well.
Any chance someone lives in his area(New Yorkish??) that can check somehow if he's at least OK? It's funny how one can get so used to seeing people on YT and almost feel like they're a friend. Of course they're not, and I don't want that to sound weird. But one kind does feel a similar feeling of concern when they just vanish. Also a good idea, in this YT era to leave instructions in ur will to have your executor post a message on your last video announcing your death. Same goes for websites, FB, etc. Hope your around still Mike. You have/had such great videos.
Miss seeing you brother
Looked on Instagram and looks like there's posts from yesterday, Mar 20/19, but don't know if that's just last comment date. Hope ur just too rippin busy to make vid's and u are well. Maybe just a couple second, no edit vid to let us know ur alive. Funny how just being a viewer of videos gets one hooked into a person like a friend and to have similar concern when they 'disappear'. Interesting psychology.
What ever happened to Mike? Man thus really was my favorite knife making channel... Mike just let us know your at least ok brother!
comon say something, we miss you Mike :)
