True Velocity Polymer Case Ammunition Test in Cold Weather

Спорт

Originally meant to be a test of the precision of True Velocity's .308 Winchster 168 gr. Nosler Custom Competition polymer case ammunition. However, due to cold temperatures (at least I think), this video ended up being more about some potential issues with the ammunition.

This is very interesting. Thanks for shedding light on it... If I were to guess, the cold chamber on the first round might be shortening the plastic deformation threshold of the material resulting in the thinnest and weakest part, the neck, fracturing and breaking off. With that said, by observing the remains of the case it looks a lot like the case geometry that TV used for their NGSW bid. This leads me to believe that the part of the case with that geometry is what is actually doing all that a case is supposed to do while the rest (more conventional looking, shaped like brass) of it is simply there for chamber compatibility. I wouldn't lose confidence in the safety of the ammo, but I would be wary of debris buildup. I believe that we will only truly see the full potential of polymer ammo fulfilled when chambers are designed for polymer case geometry. In the meantime, it's quite the uphill battle for TV.

Thanks for watching and posting your thoughts! It very well could be the cold chamber is making it so the polymer on the case neck cracks and separates instead of expanding to release the bullet. I think it’s more a material issue with polymer cases currently, and more research needs to go into them before they can be used on existing calibers such as the .308 I was using here. A rifle with a chamber made specifically for polymer cases from the ground up would probably work, but I don’t see how that could get it to also be within CIP/SAAMI spec and function reliably with existing brass or steel-cased ammunition. If they go that route with designing a chamber (or entire rifle) for polymer cases, I would think it’d be best to build it from the ground up in a proprietary caliber to prevent the issues that might come up otherwise, though at that point there’d probably be little to no market for it. Either way, certainly interesting to think about.

@@Feldmutze It seems the upcoming Amicus rifle will be chambered in the 6.8 TVC cartridge, but so far that seems to be the only platform designed for a bespoke polymer case geometry from the ground up. We'll see how that pans out, certainly looks very intriguing.

Honestly, i think with more time, more RND and possibly a better manufacturing process with more precise case wall thicknesses, this stuff will become more common and popular. Its new technology and everything new needs to be tested, restested then tested 100 more times before it gets into being close to the best it can be. Especially with all the bullshit going on nowadays.

I had the same failure as your father and it resulted in a squib round stuck inside the neck of the previous casing. Rifle was out of commission for the day. I had two severed necks on the 10 casings from that day.

Dang, that's a really dangerous malfunction. Thanks for posting your experiences with this ammo.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm pretty wary of their ammo given the problems I had with it in .308, but I'll consider ordering some to test out.

I'll never support this subtle form of ammo and gun control

What does this video or True Velocity have to do with either ammo or gun control?

@@Feldmutze I knew someone would not get it. It's going to likely make reloading near impossible. That alone will greatly reduce people's ability have ammunition for competition. When they are more able to constrict the flow of ammo, the less they have to concentrate on the guns.

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't see this supplanting brass cases any time soon, and you could say the same about steel-cased ammo too. My thinking is that if polymer-cased ammunition advances more it might be possible to 3D print cases in the future and make reloading even more accessible. Might be wishful thinking but we'll see. Either way, did you even watch this video? I showed this ammo had average accuracy from my rifle and, worse, that two case necks ruptured. I don't recommend the ammo.

@@Feldmutze I did, I was not really commenting to you directly. Just commenting in general. You bring up some great points. I'm not that optimistic but I hope you are right if polymer becomes the standard.
