    Excellent video. It amazes me how this one got approved. I think it's one of the worst restorations I've seen. The raised black is so bad it's a struggle for me to watch it. Some restoration expert reviewed this at 10 out 10 for video. You know who I mean. That's just sad, and embarrassing. Some people just don't get it. Glad you posted this video, and thanks for all the hard work.

    @@Revolver1981 It means the image is so bright that there's lost detail in the bright areas. For instance, explosions/flames are just flat white lights instead of, y'know, complex shades or orange. If you don't even know what you're talking about, how on earth do you feel so confident saying that the "picture quality looks amazing"? Your qualification is that you're a "normal person," e.g., a laymen, e.g., you don't know what you're talking about? Then enjoy watching the DVD and let us people who _care_ about picture quality discuss the actual issues with the image, or are you going to go to a museum and explain to everyone how good the paintings are when you don't know anything about art?

    There is a fairly decent 35mm.1080p.Cinema.DTS.v1.0 scan around that is probably my favourite version of the film yet. It's quite blown out in the highlights but the blacks are super deep - might just be the scan though. I love the colours in that version, they're closer to the DVD but even more dramatic, makes the new release look faded

    I wonder if there was an issue with the cameras while filming, perhaps it looked in proper focus in the viewfinder but somehow wasn't actually in focus when it went on film? Or maybe whoever was behind the camera needs some glasses? That is really weird to me to have so many shots slightly out of focus. Also, could they have possibly not used an original super 35mm or 70mm print? Maybe they used a bad print before doing the cleaning up work? Great job on noticing that! Really good video!

    @@LELABODEJAY It's just a weird thing to me to have scenes ever so slightly out of focus. It then makes sense that any AI cleanup work would have issues trying to sharpen people's faces if it is lacking the original definition of that person because it's not focused on their face. This was a really awesome video you did, I learned a lot! But I also think now I have more questions then answers now too! 🤣

  • @MsMarco6
    @MsMarco63 ай бұрын

    As someone that uses Ai video tools quite a lot I definitely think it was used here but not to the extent people think. Most of the shots look like traditional DNR with some sharpening and other techniques applied liberally on top. But there are a few that scream AI to me namely at 6:27 If you look at his face in UHD you can see some crosshatched wrinkle patterns on his cheek along with some vein like structures on his chin, not visible in the Hulu version. You can also see some faint diagonal lines around his eyes. And note how pores around his mouth & chin are completely scrubbed whilst becoming more obvious on his neck, temple and forehead. These are clear Ai artefacts, additional detail being added that clearly wasn't there in the source and detail being scrubbed in an adaptive manner. That's the main way to tell the difference between Ai and older techniques, is new detail being created or is it just old detail being scrubbed. It makes sense they'd do it this way. Ai isn't ready for primetime, some shots will look magnificent whilst others display obvious errors so a mix of techniques is still necessary. Unfortunately they didn't screen the results well enough and some obvious errors snuck through. However at the end of the day Ai is not the movies main issue, it's those older methods that are destroying the picture.

    What about the hair? In most of the shots the hair looks like oil paint.

  • @MsMarco6

    @MsMarco6

    2 ай бұрын

    @@Selrisitai That's explained by DNR. If you erase film grain there's nothing underneath so the algorithm has to fill in with surrounding material, blurring the area and creating an impressionistic look. Ai meanwhile doesnt have that problem especially not with hair. It's trained on video of real hair and so can fill in the blanks with plausible detail leaving the hair looking more detailed than in the source video. So the oil painting like look is more evidence of non Ai techniques. Ai artefacts in hair would be things like strange patterns in the hair or strands that weren't there originally.

    After watching this review and your Aliens review, I have a theory about the lack of HDR. While it is unknown what AI software was used at Park Road to enhance the films, the only consumer software I know of that can do this is Topaz Video Enhance AI. Topaz notably can only enhance SDR video because the models were not trained on HDR footage. While they may be using some other machine learning software other than Topaz, it likely has a similar limitation due to a lack of training data. Therefore, my theory is that all of these new Cameron remasters are SDR color grades wrapped in HDR containers because they had to work with SDR when doing the AI image enhancement. I love your observation about the soft focus and the enhancements being done to hide it. I haven’t had a chance to watch this in high definition yet, but I will look out for the soft focus.

  • @Selrisitai

    Excellent analysis. I was wondering what the reasoning was behind some of the tinkering. It wasn’t to scrub grain because the grain’s still there, in some scenes exacerbated by the tinkering. The explanation that mistakes were made in hitting focal points correctly makes a lot of sense. And the highlight clipping annoyed me as well. It’s an odd release, for sure, but not entirely a travesty. A good 60% of the movie looked ok and I enjoyed watching it. Interesting that the Hulu version looks better… Keep up the great work!

I have the space/equipment/wife approval to convert my 5.1 system to 5.1.2 Atmos by installing two in-ceiling speakers and it would be interesting to see what happens with the object processing. Two, do you think 5.1.2 is worth it, or would I be happier forgoing Atmos altogether? Oh no, not my boy James Cameron... I think he just got excited with the power of AI and wanted to get the most out of the scan. I can clearly see the AI struggling with the distant faces, as well as the face textures, which are mistaken by noise and then smoothed out, so you get that very non-homogeneous picture. The focus problem is probably the AI not being able to track all the faces properly, which cause some to get sharpened, and some don't. Funny enough, if the master was too degraded, maybe scanning the D-VHS version to digital could've have turned out better, who knows.

    A very useful and informative video but the irony of someone questioning the choice to use A.I video processing via an A.I audio narration where every 5th word is inaccurately pronounced will not be lost on many!

    Thanks for your feedback I’m French and all my videos are in French. I make this English version to share the content. I’m not fluent and it’s very complex for me to record in English. Try to make a video in French on such complex topics I don’t like Ai but that’s the only way that I found to make this accessible Channel is free not monetised Sorry if it’s not perfect Regards

    This is another example of why 4K remasters are not always better. I am lucky in that i have this film in all the various media that it was released in including the Laserdisc DTS which was released in 1998, this for me shows this film at it's best with few of the issues highlighted in this review. I am rapidly loosing faith in 4K releases of older films, they are making a mess of them Plains.Trains & Automobiles is another example of how to ruin a good film.

    I've got 70-year-old eyes and ears. This was an absolute pleasure to watch last weekend with friends. Could it have been better? Of course it could. The ATMOS track made it worth the upgrade for me.

    Yes sorry for that I m French. Some of my older video were dubbed by me but it’s too painful and time wasting for such a bad result. That’s why I prefer this method event if I don’t like it

    It's clear that the negative was fine, they just weren't happy with out of focus shots in 4K, and decided they could fix them but instead made it much worse. Let this be an example to other studios doing 4K remasters. Even out of focus those shots look better than ever before, so why butcher it with AI and try to add information that isn't present? And how does this get an HDR/Dolby Vision stamping with such terrible blacks, and highlights. Shame... If they did this movie the right way, it would have been fine.

    I caved and bought The Abyss 4K because I was desperate to own a copy of the movie. True Lies and Aliens on the other hand is a hard pass.

    Prior to owning the 4K UHD Blu Ray of True Lies, it was the old R1 DVD for me. Now I have the 4K UHD, I cant go back. I'm glad I skipped that Spanish Blu Ray too.
