    That wasn't a model when they blew up the bridge @3:34...that was the old US 1 bridge that was there before they built the existing one. They were going to demolish a section anyway so that boats could navigate the channel, so they blew it up as part of the movie.

    I worked on the set of True Lies in Nov 1993 during the Florida Keys filming. They had built a 42' model of the old 7 mile bridge on the ocean side of Sugarloaf Key in shallow water about 3 feet deep. What you see blown up by missiles is a model. To harriers did make live attack runs on the old seven Mile Bridge but when they cut to the bridge it was a model. They had to wait for a day when the wind was light so that the waves or water around the bridge was proportional. Otherwise it would've been easy to see the mismatch the wave size and the model. It cost millions to build that Bridge Model. The scene where the limo goes down the old seven Mile Bridge, it took three days to film the limo pulling Jamie Lee out the top. It wasn't actually Jamie Lee Curtis it was a stunt double. From a distance you couldn't tell the difference and even pretty close you couldn't tell the difference. Jamie Lee was so nice and funny on set btw. The helicopters were flying sideways about 70 miles an hour down the bridge- they dropped the stunt double who was dangling below the helicopter on a harness through the sunroof and pulled her out. Yes, it took three days to get that one shot because the timing was critical. No way with her going to let Jamie Lee do that. The limo didn't go over the side of the bridge, it stopped short. A barge was sunk with bridge rubble on it to make it look like the old bridge had blown up - it was full of blasting cap rope with lots of cameras. Like I said that shot took three days because we had to get everything set up and one camera would run out of film so we have to pause while somebody went over in a boat to reload. I have a picture of the explosion on the sunken barge with the bridge rubble. There was a full scale model of a Harrier jet built for that shot on the marathon side of the 3 mile bridge in the parking lot-5he one Arnold gets into. You could not tell the difference between the model and the real thing it was that good. That little parking lot to walk out on the old seven Mile Bridge, it was resurfaced with special harden concrete to withstand a hairier landing. That's right at least one of the carriers scorched a palm tree coming in and landed right there it was pretty cool. I have a lot more memories of this film because I spent so many hours on set. It's amazing how much people get wrong with this movie. The safety coordinator Was the only one besides James Cameron that could all stop the filming. One time the safety coordinator saw a problem with a harness attached to the helicopter that was going to lift a stunt double. He got on the radio and Gave the code for all stop. Remember Brandon Lee was killed by a blank that wasn't really a blank so the safety guy was a very important job And had the final say so if something doesn't look safe. We had I think three helicopters that started up every morning at 3:30am went to the Marathon airport fueled up he got into position to film the day's shots. At the end of Marathon there's a place or was a place called Knights Key homeplace was rented for the movie set. That's where the food truck was too. It was awesome and made the best food I've ever tasted. It drove all the way from California as did the water truck that put the fires out. Many memories of that movie . . .

    @@CWLemoine the pilots you saw when Arnold jumped into the Harrier at the 7-mile bridge parking lot were actors. But you probably figured that, you know what a pilot looks like with 2000+ hrs in a high performance jet. I believe Washington approved the two Harriers from the Marines and this gig didn't go to any 1st Lieutenants. I did see the real Pilots one time and they looked like Majors on up. When the two harriers made their missile attack on the 7 mile Bridge, Cameron et al were next to them in a commercial jet (A little smaller than a GIV) outfitted with an external camera on a gimbal. We were nearby out of the shot on a big barge to the north. For me personally it was some of the most fun I ever had over three days watching them set up this crazy shot. I lived in the keys for 13 fun filled years. A friend of mine had a little Cessna 172 at mile marker 17 and we would go up and film waterspouts on good days. One of the few places left you can orbit waterspouts!

  • @CruelestChris

    Well an instant before firing the Stinger did turn into a prop rather than an inert drill launcher, and those are less accurate. More seriously the Stinger is stupid for the first 660 feet after launch, so it was probably like "wait no what was that I just flew past oh nevermind." Plus if it's swinging all over the place like that during the period it's supposed to be flying in a straight line, it's probably completely borked and would only hit the Harrier by mistake.

  • @xodia9054

    @@CruelestChris Fair points. It should also be noted that Douchebag McGee took the Stinger right out of the Weapon's Crate so I don't know if the BCU (Battery Cooling Unit) had a chance to Prime the Missile enough for an accurate IR Acquisition. Also, the backblast from the Missile would have fried just about anyone else who was behind the business end of the launcher; including the Truck Driver. .

    True Lies is a remake of the film "La Totale". It's a rare case of a remake standing on it's own rather than being a pale copy of the original. "The Man with One Red Shoe" with DeNiro or "The Departed" with DiCaprio are also remakes. A lot of movies are adapated to the American audience, which is a shame because foreign cinema is worth looking into (not that American cinema can't make great things on it's own).

    The end aim-9 shot at the end can't be ruined for me. It's one of the most hilariously silly things I've ever seen in a film and I love it! When I first saw it with my brother a long time ago we went into a hysterical laughing fit which got us in a bit of trouble. Also it's a film that has a horse v motorcycle chase.

    When I was in the British military is was stationed at RAF Gutersloh West Germany, until its closer due to the Russians quitting, which had 2 Harrier GR-5 squadrons. My on base accomodation block was close by where they liked to hover. It was really annoying when I took local leave as the noise, even through the double glazed windows, was enough to drown out my TV on full volume. And for the record the GR-5 can hover for a really long time, made even more annoying as they operated in a flight of three and when one was done with his hover it'd move off and be replaced by the second, and then the third. After a week of head aches I signed out some camping gear and set up in a field away from base for my second week.

    FWIW, I work with the guy who was the sound engineer on this movie. We didn't talk about the gun sound, but we did discuss the engine sound of the Harrier. He said that when recorded to audio, the Harrier just sounds like a vacuum cleaner, so the movie sound has to be enhanced. This is true for a lot of sounds taken from real life - when recorded they just don't have the same impact or what your mind thinks they sound like, so they need to be pumped up a bit :)

  • @MattIon

    @MattIon

    Жыл бұрын

    30-some years ago, I went to school for audio production. One of the classes was "audio for video", and one day we dissected the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indy is having a fistfight with the big bald dude while the German flying wing idles behind them. Our instructor pointed out that with the engines that close, you would NEVER hear things like fists on jaws (sound simulated by hitting two 2x4s together and then slowing down the playback!), the fuel gushing out of the tanker truck, or the splatter of the big guy being shredded by the prop. So we dug into how those various sounds were created and layered and placed across the audio field to make everything prominent without being muddy. There's a good reason that "sound design/editing/mixing" get their own Oscar categories - it's a lot of work, and getting it right is a fine craft.

    @c.w. Lemoine, Just found this video, was at VMA-223 back in the 2005, the ready room had a bunch of memorabilia from the movie. Sadly, I wish the Harrier could do what it is doing in the movie but the max hover time would be about 2-3 mins depending on fuel, water and armament, all of which the jet can calculate to tell you if it is possible.

    That's the old decommissioned rail road bridge (has solid surface now) down in the Keys. They actually let them blow up those sections since they were no longer using them. If you'll notice in some shots you can see the newer bridge running parallel. You can still see the missing sections when you take that drive (which I miss dearly in the last few years).
