Want to let all know my intention is not lessen a very successful company that has made many very happy with their products, but to speak of the short comings of the swords in particular that I was able to hold and use, don't think it's a testimony to the company or all their products, I'm sure a resolution will be coming and will keep all updated...thankyou

  • @JoeSteel1

Ebay or some third party sellers, that are selling authentic Nihanto from days past...Japan does have artisans producing genuine pieces but they are difficult to get and can be in the 10 thousands range.. if that's what your asking for....but replicas are made in China that are very well done...from companies like Huawai or skyjiro, Zsey is also a fantastic brand...all from 500 to over 1k...all for premium quality...but you can get good pieces from 300 and up from other makes...this is a difficult question to answer in this forum, hope this helps a bit

Been using this channel more and more as I get into Japanese swords. Such honesty and openness about the topic which I absolutely appreciate. I have a few TK pieces and they've been awesome. I agree they do tend to market more towards a non-traditional, unconventional approach to katana, sometimes emphasizing the aesthetic package. One thing I do give them credit for is they have a good selection of wakizashi and tantos, which I feel like get overlooked sometimes. Honestly, I prefer those to actual katana, I just like my blades comfortably one handed.

Thank you Joe for all the information you provided on the Katanas. I am curious is there any company you recommend for a novice that would like to learn but looking for the 100 to 200 range starter sword. Something that is aligned and balanced well. Rather than say the term that is outdated I will say it is sharp. Also do you have a book for a beginner to use as an introduction to terminology, geometry, and use? I really appreciate you taking the time to do the video and I stayed all the way to the end as I know it affects the analytics plus I was very interested and appreciative of you taking all that time. To me it didn't seem long. Thank you sir I greatly appreciate your honesty and if I was there I would have my left hand flat with my right fist up to it and bow to show respect. Hey Joe, thanks for the "sacrifice" on TrueKatana, it just confirms what the numerous alarm bells on their website already were hinting. I gave JKOO a shot in the end, I'm currently waiting 2 pieces from them and one from Huawei, all due in October hopefully (ordered in May). From JKOO there will be a $440 T10 katana with cosmetic polish and a $230 jian in 9260 with samegawa handle. From Huawei a $519 custom piece (HW531 but with regular sori, got lucky as it went up to $599 now). I was undecided about JKOO but your videos made me think it was worth a try.

Only a min 17 in and I am just like you. I just got my first and only katana. A Katana made in 2000 in Fukuoka Japan, by the Komiya Family, who's been making swords since 1786! Komikya Kunitada is the Smith. His blades are renowned for cutting, strength and sharpness in Japan. Took me 3 years to make it happen. Bucket list item ☑️. Boyhood dream ☑️. I still have to get a katana stand! I kinda went backwards, went for the gold first, and now I need a boken and a Iaido sword, as I would like to learn the ways to properly handle katana, but I am only ever using this grail sword If my LIFE depends on it!! I probably have more to say, but I'm so pumped right now, I had to pause it just to blurt this out like a kid on Christmas LOL. 🙏 Sounds like your from Staten Island originally like myself, but maybe Brooklyn? MAYBE long island. Maybe Jersey haha. Anyway I'm upstate. Now let me check out your video! 😂💪🙏

Well that is good for sure, I can only speak of the swords in hand, overall the biggest gripe was how they were priced, if these swords were in the 200 range some of the issues would be expected, but the maring of the blade and faulty heat treatment should not happen even on budget katana. They just felt like quick production releases with no individual care or QC put into them, the swords should not have been sold as they were. But yes I'm aware that many people are content with their products as they are a busy company, I personally just look to have companies do better in their QC.

To be able to recommend a purchase on this platform can be very long winded answers as there are many questions before a recommendation can be made depending in what a person wants a sword for, real use or just as a wall hanger, one suggestion would be Ronin katana line in the sub 200 range, I believe it's the RK series...well built and can stand up to real practice cutting...thanks for watching...I do have a buyers guide video in my catalog somewhere

I really appreciate your honest review of True Katana. It pains me to read "battle ready" as well. I say this with the utmost respect as I know you are very passionate about Japanese swords themselves and you have taken the time to educate yourself and you have a deep and abiding respect for the craft of the sword: if there is any opportunity for you to study under a sensei in traditional ryuha, please take it...I think your passion and respect for the history and tradition of the Japanese sword would make you a good student and it would help you to learn how to hold the sword properly and how to do tameshigiri properly. I am not here to critique those things but it just an observation from someone who has studied formally under a sensei for nearly two decades as well as someone enjoys your channel.

It’s not a horrible looking sword, but in my experience any katana that has hand painted saya with a dragon or a saya with some kind of artistic rendition usually sucks. Doing these arty things takes time and money and that takes away from the overall quality of the sword. Looking at the sword, it’s polish is very basic almost looks like they polished the blade and gave it the bare minimum in the etching bath. I really hate the “cosmetic polish”, I saw it done in China from a video and it’s just a stone polish in which the hamon is gray and the rest of the nagasa is a white color (I’ve seen this on a few Japanese swords, but it’s not regarded as a nice polish in Japan), however for a Chinese katana it does the job. My Ronin Katana had that cosmetic polish, and I paid to have the blade polished to 30,000 grit stones and I did the etching myself resulting in a high-end hybrid polish. I remember when the Ronin back in 2012-2014 was regarded as the best production sword you could buy, however it was the opposite as this sword in that all the money/effort was spent on the blade. How times have changed lol. Still a great sword though…😎.

I was wary of these guys when I checked out their site a while back, but holy crap. For $300 you could do soooo much better. I think they shopped the trainee-made components from the forge, or the straight-up seconds. I think those spots on the blade are corrosion they tried to quickly steel-wool over. And here I was feeling sad over some micro-chipping I just did to the edge of one of my super-cheap swords during a blade-on-blade parrying test, but yours took much worse from a "soft" target. I'm noticing that most all of your cuts from left to right are clean while the right to left cuts are not. When I cut I noticed there's a forehand and backhand feel. When your dominant hand is palm down the shoulders and elbows flow smoothly but on the backhand side there's tension and joints feel tight. Switching my grip helped but it still seems like there's a dominant side and an awkward side. I was mashing all my backhand cuts until I accentuated the drawing motion. As soon as I stopped swinging it like a baseball bat or axe and more like a long knife my backhand cuts became clean slices and not mashed potatoes. The edge is almost indestructible when slicing but can easily get rounded or chipped when hit headon. Blades bending is often due to lack of draw. All the force in one area and the blade tries to wrap around what it's hitting. Any deviation from perpendicular and it bends. Any draw will spread the impact preventing wrapping or breaking. Even strikes at angles won't bend if there is sufficient draw. Instead of chopping tatami mats I practiced on some invasive sawgrass and got endless chopping till I had to resharpen and finally got blisters. A couple hours of cutting really shows what works and gets you sweaty and sore. I started focusing on the back of the handle where small movements result in big tip movements all moving around the pivot point effortlessly. Combined with the draw meant everything was chasing the handle backwards but the tip was flying out almost like cracking a whip.

"Battle Ready" is a give away that its a Chinese sword company. A lot of Chinese sword companies that makes Chinese 'Jian' Or ' Katana' seems to use same exact terms to sell their products..to attract nerdy kids maybe? I mean.. these Katanas are beautiful but the blades are usually factory made ,only the sheeth and other parts are maybe hand made. I'm not a expert but for couple hundred bucks for these katanas are not a bad purchase I'd say ! If you just wanna play around with it. I've heard from a Japanese KZreadr that also practice Iaido, that if you wanna buy real Japanese Katana from Japan that made by well known sword smith is kinda difficult it seems.. If you purchase it from any Katana shops from Japan or from their websites, after you've done transaction they're not gonna send your Katana right away! Bc you need to do some procedures to own that sword. Like, send applications form to head company for ownership and purchase, and you need some paperwork along with it ...so I've heard!

It is very difficult to purchase or do business with Japan when it comes to katana, as they have many laws in place that started after world War II, There are many Chinese forges that make very well made swords its when the big corporations get involved and price them and market them wrong, my message is to the buyer of a 400 range katana and not getting what was sold to them when there are many more options from reputable forges, if these two katana where 150 to 200 I would not have been so harsh, as they were at least priced according to what they are....thanks for watching

Such as “舌 tongue” “里 inside” . I have the same feelings and thought of it’s kinda disrespectful how these replica katana company market themselves as real katana, when the actual real ones are actually built by fully handmade and take months to refine. I have no opinion for them to sell with such low quality along with the cheaper price compare to a real katana, but I just hope that they can at least titled it as “replica katana” 🙂 and yes the term battle ready is just stupid 🤣

My brother bought me a sword from truekatana (we are both katana enthusaists) as a wedding gift, and I unfortunately have the same problem with the koiguchi. Unfortunately, when I contacted customer service, they responded with the excuse that they are apparently "making the scabbards tighter as a response to customers who complained about them being too lose and injuring themselves" - failing to even use the right terminology about their own product, and contradicting their own advertising as a blade that is in fact meant to be used. Additionally, the sword I received fails to cut anything, and really just feels and handles like a metal baseball bat. All of this in my mind has basically just painted truekatana as a decorative sword website, which I suppose is fine in it's own right, I mean I love the way my sword looks on its stand, but that's about as far as utility goes... Because you don't have the experience of buying a sword yet, I would advice going to a company that is reputable good solid sword. Ronin Katana, has an RK line in the Sub 200 range, and a better DoJo pro line in the 200 to 300 range last I checked, get a blade length of 27 to 28" for your height, they are well built swords that are made to function and perform, depending on your budget. If you are not looking to do much practice cutting if at all the RK line is fine, but I advice you to practice and research how to use it for safety reasons and for an emergency, and also learn how to maintain the blade. Hanwei katana is also a very safe shop for quality built swords....I can give more options, but not to overwhelming you, these two are great options for a first purchase, see Kult of Athena and Ronin katana or sbg sword store for deals and stock...good luck

I'll never deal with truekatana again. They sent me a wakizashi with a defect and said it's "impossible" that they shipped it like that. Looks like some sort of chemical spill on the blade. They tried to say it was caused by "spraying it with fire" whatever that means. Like I decided to "spray fire" on a brand new $200 sword? It looks nothing like fire damage. Now I have to deal with my bank to try and get my money back. Plus it's not "razor sharp" in the least as they describe. The $50 flea market sword I got years ago is sharper.
