Life Pro Tip: If you ask someone about their beliefs and they try to avoid it, don't push it. It means they know you will not like the answer.
My jaw dropped when he started talking about this stuff...it was like the words I'd been keeping to myself all these years were suddenly being spoken by someone else. Making it even more surreal was the fact that my name is Russ and I grew up ten minutes from the real-life church that inspired this series.

If you like that, you should read some books of Emil Cioran, because it's his ideology or Arthur Shoppenhaueur

I'm an atheist. I live in Oklahoma. It's hard to have a sane fucking conversation around here.

It is possible to have a sane conversation with a theist. Difficult, but possible. We can start one right now. I believe in God and I'm also not an idiot. What do you want to talk about?

In Sweden religous people are considered almost mentally insane.
I think deep down, everyone thinks this way at one point or another. The key is to conform to not talking about it otherwise you'll find yourself completely alone for life. Instead, people procreate to justify their existence.

People procreate because of a healthy sense of self-love, and procreation is a means in which we extend ourselves through time. And not only just ourselves, but our families and the extension of that unit, which is to say our ethny and therefore nation. People who lack this, and there are people that do, are swallowed up by a deep drive toward selfishness and love of personal gratification. They cannot perceive their self as an extension of another self (mother and father) connected to a history and tradition of selves perpetuated through time. This is Rust. Rust is not smart. Nor is he healthy or "normal".

Where's the part of this conversation where they mention the weather
"We aren't natural, we deny nature (ie programming)." "The most honorable thing to do is deny our programming." This is why I hate philosophy. Most philosophers can't get to the end of a sentence before they contradict themselves.
I do not have a problem with religion but what he's saying is true in a sense. If you look at the facts, humanity does nothing but self endulge. Even a good human being cannot be without consumption so to suggest that we have a purpose is very selfish. We are killing this planet and killing each other every day and our existence is a cancer on other aspects of the life separate from our own and religion blinds people into thinking that it's all going to be okay so why worry about such things. Just as long as I'm a good person. Am I wrong?

Good doesn’t exist if we have no meaning, value or purpose.

***** as he said hes a realist, but current culture sees him as a pesimist, because the culture is soaked in optimism, and if someone sees how fucked humans and nature is, a realist will be considered as a pessimist.

Radically Autonomous Yes, philosophical pessimism is the result of existential nihilism but it does not mean that all existential nihilists turn out to be pessimists. There are existential nihilists that are optimistic and they feel liberated by the lack of meaning. Of course to me they are hedonists in denial. The term nihilism is easy to get mixed in different interpretations. As there can be value to the sentient experience but no existential purpose. But others refuse also to recognise any form of value, denying basically all of their existential experience

I think that cynicism, misanthropy, and nihilism all tie in together. As well if you're an objective type thinker. You look at reality & people in a whole, and then realize that the world is fucked. The only meaning to life is the biological reason of course (to reproduce) and the other is, whatever meaning you give yourself. See, where people go wrong in general is they are under the illusion that they are owed some type of existence. Just like Rust said essentially, you're not owed anything. Everyone is nobody. The minute you allow your own subjective feelings to rule your mind, is the exact moment you've committed intellectual suicide.
yup, hits the nail on the head, also it is pretty fucking pathetic how people think waaaay outside of the box and get attacked instantly. people like me are trapped on this fantastic planet inhabited by stupid "humans".
This dialog hasn't aged well. It sounds more and more ridiculous. Woody's character is the only thing keeping it grounded. It feels like a desperate plee by the writer to be heard.
