True Detective - Opening song (HD) (The Handsome Family - Far From Any Road)

The Handsome Family - Far From Any Road HD (Singing Bones - 2003)
From the dusty mesa, her looming shadow grows
Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote.
She twines her spines up slowly towards the boiling sun,
And when I touched her skin, my fingers ran with blood.
In the hushing dusk, under a swollen silver moon,
I came walking with the wind to watch the cactus bloom.
A strange hunger haunted me; the looming shadows danced.
I fell down to the thorny brush and felt a trembling hand.
When the last light warms the rocks and the rattlesnakes unfold,
Mountain cats will come to drag away your bones.
And rise with me forever across the silent sand,
And the stars will be your eyes and the wind will be my hands.
The Handsome Family is an alternative country and americana band, formed in Chicago, Illinois, and currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
History
The band was formed in 1993 by husband-and-wife duo Brett Sparks (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Rennie Sparks (bass, banjo, vocals), along with drummer Mike Werner. The band would later revolve around Rennie, who writes the lyrics, and Brett, who writes the music. Guest musicians complete the band line-up for recordings and live work.
Regarding the band name, Brett said in an interview: "It's just kind of a stupid name. We used to have this really obnoxious drummer, and he used to call me 'Handsome', that was his nickname for me, I think for sarcastic reasons... And he wanted to call it the Handsome Family...and we thought it was funny, too. We thought it was a good name."
Brett is originally from Odessa, Texas and Rennie from Long Island. The band toured extensively throughout both America and Europe in support of early releases Odessa (1994) and Milk and Scissors (1996). During that time, Brett suffered an emotional breakdown, resulting in his hospitalization and diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Their third full-length album, Through the Trees, was written in the aftermath of these events, and included a song inspired by Brett's experiences in the psychiatric unit. The album was recorded in 1998, using Jeff Tweedy's mobile studio, and brought the band to a wider audience. It was named the "Best New Country Album of the Year" by UNCUT.
A growing following and raised profile allowed Brett and Rennie to give up their day jobs and work on the band full-time. They toured America and Europe again in support of the 2000 album In the Air. In 2001, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and released Twilight, with Allmusic opining that the album leads "the listener down a lovely yet dark trail few would dare tread twice". In 2002, they released a live album, Live at Schuba's Tavern, a recording from the In the Air tour from Chicago in December 2000. They have subsequently released the albums Singing Bones (2003), and Last Days of Wonder (2006) as well as the collections Smothered and Covered (2003) and Scattered (2010).
The band's latest studio album, Honey Moon, was released in April 2009. A new album, Wilderness, was released in May 2013.

Colton Rhodes It's not confirmed what rust saw in carcosa, but a popular fan theroy is that he saw his meaning of life, and that is his death, so he can reunite with his daughter as you said. After finishing the first season for the second time I also think that would been the best for rust so he could see his daugther again. Also, when you are stabbed by a knife you should let it stay inside you, because when you remove it you can lose so much blood and can die, and that is excactly what Rust did, so I think rust tried to kill himself to meet his daughter. Death would been the only justice for rust after everything he went through imo.(sorry for a shit long reply)

...EVER" - You should've made that sentence end with E-V-E-R (after "intro", of course)! 'Cause after Twin Peaks in 1990, there hasn't been anything, NOT even remotely close, to the quality found in the True Detective, in 2013! It was simply a pure PERFECTION - one of those that comes only once in several years! P.S. Thus...given that I still hadn't seen the new Twin Peaks, I really wonder whether Lynch have truly managed to make something that good (the way the first Twin Peaks was). Something that'll be capable of standing toe to toe with the perfection known as True Detective (season 1).

The feeling this intro gives me is incomparable to any other tv show I've ever seen. It sets the scene for the story so perfectly, it's so preachy, creepy and mysterious. It shows you the world you're about to step into, mingling innocent photos of houses and chruches to give off such an eerie vibe, as if everything is connected but you just don't know yet. The chills I feel when the title appears at the end, it's indescribable.

Teekee I think they're referring to how the images are multi-layered... Woody Harrelson's face with a freeway in it and the telephone with the face on it... etc. It's more than just layering one image on another. It's done in such a way that one layer becomes the other... the freeway is only in Harrelson's face and his face is illuminated only by the freeway within it. It creates a very intimate connection between the characters and the bleak environments they move through.

Mathew McConaughey is simply the best actor in the world. What a turnaround he's made over the last few years from making movies like Sahara to Lincoln Lawyer, Dallas Buyers Club, Mud, and TV shows like True Detective, where he's completely dispelled the Hollywood-driven idea that an A-list actor playing in a TV series role marks the end of their film career. It amazes me how every movie that this man, branded as a typical 'hot-shot' body of an actor manages to be the focus of every critically-acclaimed masterpiece produced over the last few years.

I'd even argue TV is surpassing the silver screen at this point, something which I think True Detective has been a late but strong contributor too. I hope he returns to the role as rumoured, provided Pizzolatto doesn't fuck it up like he did the first one. There was definitely a lot to work with, and it's criminal not too see more of that lush scenery (Louisiana, not LA)

Lots of TV shows are great, entertaining, some are masterpieces. But THIS season, True Detective reaches a height where a TV production have never reached before, the step where you can only call a work, art. This is the greatest season ever created, because it tells us how the chain of command works in this society, the misteries and smoke curtains unravels, with highly existential reflections, the nature of our soul, the mud beneath the society's surface, the most obscure side of humans and ultimately the hope of human condition that Rust Cohle represents, searching for the absolute truths, including spiritual like in the final.

First it was The Sopranos. Then came The Wire. And now this is that one show, out of a bunch of actually really good ones, that governs you watch the intro every time just because it's so damn great.

The thing that made this show so good for me was that they built this living breathing world and group of characters with unmatched detail and interest, all in 8 hours. And that was it. 8 hours. For a narrative, location, and ensemble which could have easily had 5 or 6 great seasons of fantastic television, they finsihed it in one season. If something is truly great, it can last. Rust and Marty are the kinds of characters that people would have watched for years on end, but rather geniously, the writers only gave us this magic once. Now, the beauty of True Detective lives on, and we will watch these characters for years on end. But only these 8 hours, over and over again. Just like they said: "Time is a flat circle". Best tv show I ever seen

Each to their own.. but from my own personal stand... True Detective is a truly great TV show. I guess I'm the right age to have experienced a lot of what these two men have in their lives.. love lost, love wasted, battling against a darker side, self destructive to the point of alienating those around me, but still have the capability for good and doing good things. It gripped me from the word go... because I could relate to these men. Deeply flawed good people.

TD is also existential and has more hidden messages than BB 3.) TD is smartly written and well directed. again so is BB but with true detective you have to use your head while watching. thats my opinion anyways. i know no one has asked for it but i thought id share it. i love both series in a special way but i just prefer TD peace

I've watched each episode at least 4-5 times each now. This show is like reading a heavy duty hardcore literature novel. You have to watch each one over and over or else you'll easily miss clues. In episode one they had the killer, the mysterious Yellow King, pegged right off but they didn't know it. I found that out by watching it again this week. Supposed to be a new season next year. I wonder if they solve the case in tonight's last episode or continue on next season with Woody and Matthew and interview other detectives involved in the case? Hmmm?

We'll see what happens in the final episode, but I think the magic of the script is that it's full of clues that lead nowhere. The vast majority of the thoughtfully crafted clues are misdirections designed to do just what they're doing, making people go crazy trying to figure it all out. The real story is simpler. The dynamic of the relationship between Marty & Cohle. If you're waiting for a spectacular surprise ending I think you'll be dissapointed. The only twist that remains is the fact that both of our heroes likely will be killed in a shootout and the evil people will remain to continue the endless flat circle. Clearly the entire package is fantastic. Some of the best acting, writing, production and directing ever in a made for TV series.

Personally I think it's the best intro I've heard in decades matching very well with he show. I buddy gave me the complete set after I told him I'd never watched a show. The first thing that grabbed me was the intro so I immediately began scanning the opening credits and saw "T-Bone Burnett" was in charge and knew right away all the music score would be badass as the show. A dream that you had inside a locked room. A dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams there's a monster at the end of it. In eternity, where there is no time, nothing can grow. Nothing can become. Nothing changes. So death created time to grow the things it would kill.

This song blows away season 2's theme song. I've never been a Tom Waits fan anyway. But Far From Any Road really set the tone for season one. Haunting, beautiful, mysterious...

This intro is just so good. One of those you just never skip because the music is original, the photography is amazing, the layering of scenes over people's faces/bodies is so clever (and pretty sexy at time haha)

The only intro I watch every single time I play an episode off of a file or disc instead of fast-forwarding it. The best is when the freeway scrolling across Woody's face ends up looking like a skull.
