Season 2 is great. Only reason people disliked is, was because it came out a year after season 1. Look at how season 3 was received. That season wasn't half as good as season 2 and people ate it up.

it's mindblowing that people think season 3 was better than season 2. Obviously neither can hold up with the first, but I think people are way too emotional in judging what followed, and by season 3 things just calmed down a bit. Kinda sucks, that was a lot of good work with not enough credit imho.

This is my most favorite scene. It's one of the most powerful cinematic scenes that I have the pleasure to admire. Every time, every second. The atmosphere is so heavy, so oppressive, so stiffling, with an intense fragility amplified by the superb song of Lera Lynn. Every glance, every line of dialogue plunges us into the depth of the characters. Men and women tormented by violence, sadness, resignation, cynicism, tortured by their introspection on a life that does not offer them a very happy perspective. It smells of distress. It smells of death. One could write a book about this scene. Pure masterpiece.

This is easily the best scene in all three seasons for me. The music first of all, makes it memorable. There have been some amazing real songs used in HBO television, but this is so unbelievably haunting I will never forget it. More so though, the way this song caps all of the sorrow all three main characters are displaying is genius. I don't use that word lightly. The way this scene brings them all together into the plot is the best thing that happens in any season, because its so unlikely. In the other seasons, the detectives are already paired. It didn't take any great sorrow or strange turn of fortune to bring them together, and that in of itself makes them unbelievable. To think that some one like Rust and Marty were just working together for however long before catching that case, makes it feel very much like Television. It makes me wish I could see more into their life. This though, is real. Wild life events forcing strangers together who don't realize they have so much in common until its too late. Almost TOO real. Its a shame the side characters were so forgettable, because the initial premise here is one of the best things I have seen anywhere.

Season 2 may not be the masterpiece that season 1 was but man theres no denying i was much more pumped after the first episode this season... u got this amazing scene with Lera in the background literally gives me chills everytime.. it's even better with Colin and Vince and then that scene with Taylor riding in the darkness then finding the body in the middle of seemingly nowhere was such a great way to end this episode...after i first saw this season i liked it but watching it over it's gotten better each time..yes still not better than season 1 but underappreciated imo no doubt..all the leads were great in their roles especially Colin and Rachel but Taylor too(there's something i really like about that guy too bad John Carter and Battleship were busts cuz he no doubt would've been on the road to A list if they were successful) and Vince even though it irked me some of the lines Nic gave him just seemed like he was trying to be Rust but he grew on me..I'm yappin..dope season, underappreciated, enough said

The only reason people hate this show is because it couldn’t possibly live up to the quality of season 1, which objectively one of the greatest single seasons of television of all time. It’s in my Top 3 favorite shows for sure. Can’t decide if it’s my favorite show ever yet, but it’s between that & Twin Peaks for me. Nic the original creator, was forced by HBO to pump out season 2 as quick as he could. For season 1 he had 4 years to plan that 1 season. But for season 2 he had 18 months… it’s no wonder the season turned into a tonal-incoherent mess! But i think Nic is a gifted writer, and the story shines bright in little pieces all throughout the series. I actually really loved the mystery, the characters and their interactions. But the poor editing, poor pacing, and inconsistent direction turning it into a strange, almost parody of season 1. People can meme on Rust Cohle all they want. But in the show w the proper context, you realize it’s all set up to show how rusty and Marty are partners, but have completely opposite perspectives. That’s why it’s so impactful at the end when the reunite and solve the case. They release they’re both a little right, and they’re both a little wrong. The Yin & the Yang. The light & the dark. While i enjoyed the characters & performances overall in season 2, I just didn’t connect with most of them emotionally, so they all ended up being forgettable. There’s so many scene of show mo sad faces. It worked w Rust Cohle, and It looks very nice, but if by episode 7 I still have ZERO context of what the basic plot is, the experience turned into a very strange shadow of its former glory. Not bad by any means! Better than most tv shows! But it has a lot of weird tonal problems and it just not better than season 1. I admit I overhyped myself for this, but I would’ve rather waited another 4 years so that it would’ve been Nics final vision. I think an abridged version might be worth looking into? I’m sure someone could edit it to make it more coherent at least!

I tryed to watch the second immediately after the first, and I couldn't get it, too many names that I coukd not memorize. And then after 4 years, I gave it one more try. What a wonderful writing.... I fell in love with all its main characters, with Colin Farrell''s character, one of the best in the cinematography, then with one of Frank - Vince Vaugh's character, i loved him even more in the end when he didn't want to give up, their friendship, their romance relathionships with women. Beware of the trees, Ray. I loved this character so much, much more then other characters....

Unpopular opinion: I think S2 is really good. Is it better than S1? I mean, S1 was nearly perfect so ofcourse it's gonna be hard to 'top' that. But True Detective is an anthology series so it's not really meant to be compared in the first place. I saw S1 about 8 years ago, and I'm only watching S2 now (got 2 more eps left). I think leaving a time gap between watching S1 and 2, personally helped me to not compare them too much. Plus the criticism about S2 ironically made me go into this unbiased. I didn't expect anything really. Just wanted to finally see what it was like for myself. And so far I'm really enjoying it. I think too many people compare it to S1, and as a result are left dissapointed, which is a shame. In fact, I think all the S2 criticism led to the producers trying to replicate S1, when they made S3. And a lot of people seem to agree with that, from what I've read (haven't seen S3 yet). S2 isn't trying to be anything but its own story. And it succeeds in that. Sure the plot isn't as dark and haunting and the dialogue isn't as philosophical, but it's also not trying to be that. I think many people missed that. It's its own story, with its own characters, who each have their own backstory. And if we look at the more technical aspects, we get great cinematography, a great soundtrack and great acting (Colin Farrel is exceptional, also enjoying Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn does his best performance yet). All of that accumulates to great atmospheric storytelling that I honestly find reminiscent of Twin Peaks at times, which is known and loved for its unique dark atmosphere. This scene is a perfect example of that. It's the HBO quality we're used to, and I wish more people would watch this from a different, more neutral angle.

I thought s2 was more dark and haunting actually the way that all their lives already suck and knowing right from ep1-2 that they aren’t supposed to solve the case and fix Vinci and they are all expendable and the more they investigate the more the corruption starts to fuck with their lives until they find themselves suspended or evicted and even wanted by the police or dead it’s really scary how badly everything shakes out for them

I get how high expectations can lead to disappointment, but Jesus Christ season 2 is better than 90% of TV. It lived up to season 1's standards about as well as it could. The acting is top notch, the dialogue sharp, the direction captivating, the plot is a rollercoaster, and the characters are written well enough that when I realized they were fucked I was genuinely upset; not even season 1 got me to care that much. The season even compliments season 1 thematically imo. Is season 1 better? Yes. While the actors in season 2 gave it their all, McConaughey and Harrelson gave a performance of a lifetime. The script is tighter in season 1. Objectively, I think it's better written: it takes more skill to write with brevity than to write "complexly." That said, I don't actually think season 2's convolutedness is a flaw. It was easier to write, but I enjoyed the result. I imagine binging the show makes it a lot more palatable. But I won't deny how confusing it is. And while I "liked" the characters in season 2 more than the characters in season 1, objectively the first season's characters are more developed. A side effect of season 1 having two protagonists as opposed to four, and really Rust gets most of the attention. But all that's like calling a millionaire poor because Jeff Bezos exists. It's a fantastic season. Better than most. If people _liked_ season 3, I have high expectations.

@@michaelhenry3234 Nah, have to agree with the other dude. Season 2 is all over the place. More complex but the drama just isn't interesting. The acting by the lead cops is good but the Dialogue of Vince Vaughan is hilarious. His acting is crap too and his story is boring. Ill give you that it is better than alot of dtamas made nowadays but, most shows are pretty generic nowadays. I feel like I thought it'd be a hard hill to climb doing a season 2 and that's exactly how it turned out. Too dull.

@@norbitcleaverhook5040 I feel like opinions are always formed by both expectations and the mood you happen to be in when watching it. Not just True Detective, but for anything. There are shows that I felt are dull or uninteresting or cliche... and there are other shows that are most probably equal in quality that I had fun with and thought were exciting. TD S2 happened to catch me in a good mood, apparently. Vince Vaughn's character was a walking, talking cliche but I absolutely loved it. I thought his dialogue was fun. He was my favorite part of the season. It wasn't "literary masterpiece" quality like season 1, but like... "pulp masterpiece" quality.

OK, so, like, you can't learn how to play an instrument while you're high on crack. SO, since we know she can play, she must have been clean and sober at one time in her life in order to learn music. So WHAT, in the FUCK, HAPPENED to this poor girl? I have to know. I just have to.

It would have been better if they didn’t have different directors each episode since it threw the show off balance. And would have loved if we didn’t have to follow 4 main characters LOL.

This scene is the epitome of how I feel about the season: some really clean shots, amazing music, but terribly paced, scripted, weird cuts in and out, forced edginess just to give us an overdose of the atmosphere of the first season. Not to mention the rushed character development, again feeding into the overly edginess of it all. The cast could’ve been something marvelous, but couldn’t swim with the giant boulder of producer overreach and poor production rushing it to bottom of the lake.
