Song played during the grave visit is Stories by Jory Nash available on his website.
Susan Leigh Smith (née Vaughan; born September 26, 1971) is an American woman who was convicted of murdering her two sons, three-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, in 1994 by drowning them in a South Carolina lake. The case gained international attention because of Smith's false claim that a black man had kidnapped her sons during a carjacking. Her defense attorneys, David Bruck and Judy Clarke, called expert witnesses to testify that she suffered from mental health issues that impaired her judgment when she committed the crimes.
Smith was originally sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years' imprisonment. According to the South Carolina Department of Corrections, she will be eligible for parole on November 4, 2024. She is incarcerated at the Leath Correctional Institution near Greenwood, South Carolina.
On October 25, 1994, Smith reported to police that her vehicle had been carjacked by a man who drove away with her sons still inside. For nine days, she made dramatic pleas on national television for their safe return. However, following an intensive investigation and a nationwide search for them, she confessed on November 3, 1994 to letting her car roll into nearby John D. Long Lake, drowning them inside. Her motivation was reportedly to facilitate a relationship with a local wealthy man named Tom Findlay. Prior to the murders he sent Susan a letter ending their relationship and expressing that he did not want children. She said that there was no motive nor did she plan the murders, stating that she was not in a right state of mind.
Later investigation revealed that detectives doubted Smith's story from the start and believed that she murdered her sons. By the second day of the investigation, the police suspected that she knew their location and hoped that they were still alive. Investigators started to search the nearby lakes and ponds, including John D. Long Lake, where their bodies were eventually found. Initial water searches did not locate the car because the police believed it would be within 30 feet of the shore, and did not search farther; it turned out to be 122 feet from the shore. After the boys had been missing for two days, Smith and David were subjected to a polygraph test. The biggest breakthrough of the case was her description of the carjacking location. She had claimed that a traffic light had turned red causing her to stop at an otherwise empty intersection. However, it was determined that the light would not have turned red for her unless a vehicle was present on the intersecting road. This conflicted with her statement that she did not see any other cars there when the carjacking took place.
In 1995, David Bruck and Judy Clarke served as co-counsel for Smith. In their opening statement, Clarke argued Smith was deeply troubled and suffered from severe depression. Clarke told the jury: "This is not a case about evil. This is a case about despair and sadness." The defense's theory of the case was that Smith drove to the edge of the lake to kill herself and her two sons, but her body willed itself out of the car. The prosecution, on the other hand, believed she murdered her sons in order to start a new life with a former lover. It only took the jury two and a half hours to convict her of murdering them. During the penalty phase, Tommy Pope, the lead prosecutor in the Smith case, argued passionately in favor of sentencing Smith to death. The jury ultimately voted against imposing the death penalty. Smith's defense psychiatrist diagnosed her with dependent personality disorder and major depression.

Years ago, my dad spoke to one of the divers that found them and he said when he got to the car he saw the little hand on the window and it was one of the most horrific and heart breaking things he'd ever witnessed and had to go through alot of therapy to deal with it. This story has always broken my heart, to think of those babies last moments.

Just...wow. I cried like this happened yesterday. I was only 13 when this happened. I am a mother of two precious boys, my youngest just turned 3 years old. I couldn't imagine my life without either of them! I wish single mothers who think they HAVE to be in a relationship with a man outside of her children's father, would stop and think that NO man is more important than her children. Children are our future, and it is up to us to give them all the love and nurturing they need throughout life. ❤

Scott, I remember this like it was yesterday. I had a horrible accident happen and I had lost my own son the same age as Alexander. Yes, they are both buried together in one casket. There father wanted them together for eternity as they were when they were taken from this earth. The casket had to be customised to fit them comfortably. The picture of that white casket will never leave my memory. RIP precious and innocent angels!

I also heard or read somewhere that there was so little of the boys left, it would've been pointless to put them in seperate caskets. Does anyone know if this is accurate? I'm planning on buying the book by David Smith from Thriftbooks.

I was told by a relative who knew Susan that she was always a self absorbed person who had no empathy for other people and didnt feel like rules and boundaries applied to her. I was also told that it looked like Micheal tried to unhook Alexander's car seat. I can't imagine what horrors those little babies went through. I hope they could not see their so called mom standing there watching as they were sinking to their deaths. This was a horrible way for two beautiful boys with lives to still be filled with memories and accomplishments to die. I hope the inmates make her remember what she did everyday and make her evil life hell. Death would be to easy for her let her rot where she is. Rest in love sweet princes may peace be yours. Great job Scott what a respectful and loving way to remember Micheal and Alexander.

I don’t doubt it. It’s rare that someone just loses their mind and does something totally out of character. It happens but, much more frequently, people act in accordance with character. They just don’t always get caught. She had probably gotten away with a lot already, if she thought she would get away with murder. In those days, I could see someone being that stupid. These days, I don’t know why anyone thinks they can kill someone and get away with it, but grandiosity and narcissism are often linked.

Yes,Leslie- I have always said the same thing! I read David Smith's book right after it came out back then. It was so heartbreaking 💔 and what's even more is that he and his fiance wanted the kids and David had told Susan that at least once, probably more. And not in a threatening manner, like they planned to take her to court to get full custody either. Just like letting her know they were completely agreeable whether joint or full. From the book it seemed more like he wasn't going to fight her for it , just that he definitely wanted all the visitation he was entitled to and that if she was to feel stressed and struggling too much as a single mother that he would take them. He and his fiance were already getting them for weekend visits and so the evil b!+#$ knew full well that she didn't HAVE to be a single mother full-time and if she would have just given those babies to their dad then her new lover wouldn't need to 'raise her kids' bc then he wouldn't be getting a 'ready-made.family'. Some of the details of the book are a little hazy but others are crystal clear. And ine thing idt I could ever forget is the picture on the cover showing him sobbing the day of the funeral as his family members held him up so he didn't collapse on the ground. So no, I don't think she should or will make parole. Not if the parole board has even one person on it who also remembers that image

I was about 10 years old when this happened. I remember almost crying when I heard about this. I remember my mother telling one of my older brothers that when they pulled the car out of that lake the boys were holding hands and the older one had his other hand on the window. I will never in my life forget this. Now with children of my own, there is no man on the face of this planet, not one rich enough, smart enough, talented enough, handsome enough, well dressed enough, NOTHING enough for me to give one on my babies up for. There is no way. He would be gone in a new york second no looking back except seeing my head getting smaller and smaller as I walk away. Can we all even imagine if her "sketch" had remotely matched someone? That man would have probably been convicted or at least arrested and spent time in jail for something he knew nothing about. She is a horrible person and I pray the her husband David shows up to every parole hearing and does whatever he needs to do to make sure she stays right where she is. David please keep fighting. 25 years is not long enough. She owes her life in prison. She could have been executed

I wish I could have known her in 1994. I would have taken her, protected her and provided for her and those children. All she needed was a man in her life that wouldn't exploit, use and abandoned her. She deserved better than what she got. She was not stupid. She worked her way from a cashier to a bookkeeper for a local grocery store and then was hired at the textile mill as an assistant to the executive secretary and bookkeeper. I felt conflicted about giving this video a thumbs up (which I did only because of your work), because of the story that goes with it. I remember this story and how I felt when I found out about the boys' fate. So horrible, troubling and disgusting. Imagining the fear those babies felt, thinking of her standing on the shore watching and plugging her ears (which she said she did), as the car went under, makes me sick. Then even being so arrogant to think anyone, let alone an African American man (which she blamed it on) would want her car with kids in it. Nobody, even a jacker is going to want to drive around in a stolen car with 2 screaming kids in it. She must have been nuts. Imo, she should have suffered the same fate as her babies, and she should have gotten the death penalty. She should be gone from the earth. Period.

Looking back, I was younger and didn’t realize how huge this story became until I was older and now I watch every video I can find on them. They lived in Lakeview Garden Apartment’s before the murders, my grandmother lived under them and told me stories of them arguing all the time. The two parts that make Susan Smith worse than Andrea Yates: 1) Andrea Yates had tried to give her kids to child protective services at a time months before her crimes happened and was denied, and 2) Andrea Yates called 911 herself after her crimes and confessed to the operator. There was no way anyone could have known Susan Smith was capable of harming her own kids before her crime, and Susan Smith made up the story of a black man carjacking her car at that intersection near the lake with her kids in the backseat because Susan admitted in earlier prison interviews she had thought the cops would have found the car in the lake and assumed the carjacker ditched it there. So Susan’s plan was to have the cops find her car in the lake before those cops would suspect her of the murders so she could begin her life with Tom Finley. The reports on those interviews also said Susan was shocked when the initial divers lake search from before her confession didn’t find the car in the lake (I guess that’s because she didn’t realize the part of the lake her car sank at had a larger depth than it may appear from the shore). Luckily the jury had already convicted Susan Smith of two counts of murder by that point despite her defense team arguing her depression and past suicide attempts meant she was guilty of manslaughter in the trial without needing to hear those details

This is still so heartbreaking today. Those babies would have been scared to death. And she stood and watched them. Her lawyers said she was severely depressed at the time. I don't believe that. She wanted those babies dead so she could have a guy she'd slept with at work. If she was depressed it was after when she got caught. But she's no worse than the mother who drowned her children in the bathtub. Or the mom who hung her children. Or Leticia Stauch who killed her stepson Gannon. I'm a mom and I've had depression. But I've never wanted to harm my children. It's not their fault if things go wrong in my life. She could have left her husband and the boys. I'll never understand why she had to kill them. Never.

I was pregnant with my first child, a son when this happened. I was sickened by it but when I became a mother it haunted me. Even though I knew the reason she did this, I still searched for an answer. When David wrote his book I thought I could find another reason why she did this. I never found one. I can’t fathom this at all. My son will be 27 soon and he is the absolute love of my life. Hold our children close ♥️🙏.

I worked at the prison where Susan was initially held and where she had affairs with those officers. I checked her account just out of curiosity, never less than $4000 In deposits monthly. It’s really sick! People are literally in love with her. There’s one who brings his mother and so to visit her through the year…they actually fly here for that purpose and no they did not know her prior to the crime. She’s a nice person and all (or pretends to be) but it’s a bit much. RIP little Michael and Alex. Great video, Scott! Edit- she’s done no worse than a lot of women imprisoned with her. THAT is why she’s not having such a bad time in prison because she’s in really good company. So many baby killers in SC prisons, it’s really a sad statistic….including ones who have killed way more at once than she has. Look up Dawnn Baxter and Timothy Jones.. Susan’s case was just more sensationalized.

In 1994 I had two sons ages 3 and 2. This crime devastated me. Every time I looked into my sons eyes, I'd think about those two precious boys! Back then, this type of crime was really unusual and shocking. It still makes me so sad what she did. After she did this, other women murdered their children. I will never understand how a mother could live with themselves after harming their babies! She had so many moments where she could have changed her mind but she didn't. I just can't understand! I know those boys are with God now and are surrounded by love and peace.

If she actually read the whole letter Tom Findlay wrote her and paid attention to what he was saying then she would have realized that her being a mother wasn't the biggest issue to him- she WAS. It was her as a person. I don't think he would have wanted her even if she didn't have Michael and Alex. She chose to zoom in on the fact that he didn't want his own family or an already existing family. She knew the whole time that she killed her children and where they were that entire time and still focused on what Tom thought about her, if he was going to visit her, that she didn't want David being upset if he did etc. She thrived on the drama that came with the idea in her head that these two men would fight over her. TF could have cared less about her and David just wanted to know where his children were. She had that power and used it to manipulate him that entire time because she knew all along where they were and he didn't. She's sickening and evil.

Thank you for a very detailed and informative video, Scott. This was my first video on your channel. I always watch anything about this case because it still breaks my heart like it was yesterday. I was 28 then and recuperating from the birth of my second daughter. My girls were about the same distance in age as the Smith boys, so believe me, I was in SHOCK that another MOTHER could do this, and then to HER OWN CHILDREN! Needless to say, the Vallow/Daybell case and the Chris Watts case almost give me the same emotions because again…a mother destroyed her family and then a father destroyed his. All I can really say about these people is that they have committed these evil acts due to they are selfish and pure narcissists. Otherwise I cannot resign myself to how and why ANYONE would do this to their own flesh and blood. I look forward to more of your true crime cases. Thank you very much Scott.
