Trudeau grilled by Poilievre over $162,000 Jamaica family trip

During question period at the House of Commons on Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was grilled over the details of his week-long family vacation in Jamaica over the winter holidays, which cost taxpayers at least $162,000.
After information about his vacation was released last month, Trudeau faced renewed scrutiny following media reports that the family allegedly stayed at a luxurious estate belonging to a wealthy family friend who once made a large donation to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation two years ago.
“The leader of the opposition struggles with the concept of friendship, Mr. Speaker. My father was godfather to one of their kids, their father was godfather to one of my brothers. This is 50 years of friendship… but of course we work with the ethics commissioner to make sure everything, all the rules were followed,” Trudeau said in response to attacks by opposition leader Pierre Poilievre.
Trudeau and Poilievre also went head-to-head on a number of issues, ranging from the Conservative leader’s recent classification of CBC as government-affiliated media on social media to continued allegations of foreign election interference in the form of donations to the Trudeau Foundation.

As the rest of us regular Canadians can attest, it does boil down to just friendship. I mean, who hasn't gone on a $9,000 per night vacation as a gift from a friend? Totally relatable for almost everybody.

More like Dude one: you're taking lavish vacations on taxpayer dollars, explain this. Trudeau: you're also terrible for denying affordable healthcare for Canadians and not supporting taxing the wealthy. Dude one: none of that matters, let's keep talking about your expensive vacation. I hate both politicians but Poilievre and his Conservative party are known to support the rich and vote against any amount of money going towards helping poorer citizens. I want to vote for a more reasonable option 3 but one of these two terrible options will win so don't expect anything different from the Conservatives. If anything, things are going to go downhill regardless of which party wins as the country seems to be headed towards a recession

Worst part is : making false equivalencies... when democrats/left wingers/socialists are in power, things end up always worst for the people than when right wingers are in power. Because left wingers keep spending money in order to BUY voter loyalty with small trivial financial aids redistribution while everyone sees tax spikes AND inflation, all of that in order to finance corrupt politicians like trudeau living the high life on taxpayer money. Not to mention higher crime rates and racial tensions when left wingers are in charge. So no... get your facts right. Things are ALWAYS worst when the left is in charge.

You see this is where it would be almost laughable to contradict your rather hilarious statement. You are the problem. Poeple cannot easily traverse this country. Poeple also cannot relocate to , nor can they immigrate to most of Canada without standing out like a sore thumb. The perfect opportunity for predation & discrimination to begin. Blending in just ain't an option. It is that brocken social contract/policy That prevents a lot of Canada from ever seeing any measurable increase in population. Its called shooting off your own foot to spite your face. As long as discrimination rules the day, at its very heart, don't expect any stable increases to the economy of, any of Canada. It will be short lived at best, and has been for decades. Change for the good of all, here now, and those who took the risk now, and in the future. That is how you build a country. 0_o

I would call 'privileged' anyone who gets to 'keep' the money he/she has earned, in the present economy. Many of us end up spending all that we have, if not more, on things which need, or think we need. Canada is not a socialist country. The gov't does not decide the cost of food, rent, and other necessities. I'm not saying that it should. But a lot of people who have MORE than they need keeping demand STILL MORE. This is NOT helpful to those who have LESS. (James 5:1, 5) 'Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries which are coming upon you.' 'You have lived luxuriously and lived a life of wanton pleasure. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.' The PM's expensive vacation has NOTHING to do with taxation. It has EVERYTHING to do with the FALSE sense of entitlement which rich folks sometimes have. No one enjoys paying taxes, but even the Bible speaks of their necessity. If you want to live in a society without police protection, without courts of criminal justice, without public education, social services, or coordinating agencies of any kind------------go ahead and forget about paying taxes. I expect we'd agree however, that the current federal gov't has a habit of OVERSPENDING public money.

… I heard an answer…. The vacation residence was loaned to him by a family friend… I have stayed at friend’s vacation homes before. I’m not sure what people would want for their leadership… should the prime minister stay at home for vacation time? Should they sleep in the open and eat out of garbage cans in order to not offend Canada’s poorest homeless? I hope the hypocritical standard will be honoured by Poilievre and everyone in his party if the worst should happen and they gain power.

What I do not understand, the thing that bothers me the most, is why can these politicians not be compelled by law to directly answer a reasonable question. Why are they allowed to dance around the question being posed to then deflect to something by else. In it’s current format, it strikes me as more or less a waste of time and money to even hold these silly ‘debates’.

Yeah it's brutal. I watch a lot of US senate and it's the same. You just keep dodging the question until you burn the clock. It's a shame they're allowed to get away with these blatant dodges and there isn't a some rule or law compelling them to answer. There is a senator from Missouri named Josh Hawley who is one of the best at exposing this.

Not to be mean but this is the norm… history has always been riddled with corruption and 99% of history is people dying of starvation. It was only in the last 100 years with technology that food has become a non problem for the vast majority of people in first world countries. In the old days 99% of the population starved, we’re literal peasants, and were subjugated by the ruling class. This age of democracy we all partake in is actually the anomaly in history, it has allowed so many families to climb out of poverty. But it may soon crumble due to people who want to destroy the democratic system. I would not be surprised in the future that the world reverts back to the norm, which is subjugation by a ruling class. It’s already been happening, and eventually it’ll get much worse.
