It's sad that all of those British wagons have gone. We could recognise a Foden or and ERF from way off, now they all look the same. I feel lucky that my near 50 years on the road caught the end of the "Old School Era" My Dad drove before me, and when i went out with him for the day in the school holidays, all I wanted to be, was a lorry driver, and it came to pass.

I still miss the days I drove these 'lorries' Brings back lovely memories.
Some of these lorries are so overloaded they would not be out of place in China. Have always had a love of these old trucks, this is what was on the roads when I was a kid. Thanks for putting them on.
Great pics. In the 60’s my dad drove for Pointer, being a young lad then every Saturday I was out in a Ergo beaver or mandator 32 tons not all were powered steered. My dad was well impressed that I could recognise the makes of lorries from behind by the mounting frame for the mirrors
When my dad bought his first f88 it was like stepping into a starship compared to the old bedfords we had. There was literally no comparison, like someone else said- no wonder Volvo and Scania took over the British truck scene
Did some miles with my Dad in a similar articulated ESSO Scammel tanker in the early 50s. Hanley Depot S-o-Trent to Ellesmere Port. Absolutely loved it.
Great pics, 46 years now and still in the saddle. I can remember so many of the names on those wagons. I hate the new lorries with a vengeance, all the pointless electronic tat, but overall still enjoy my work because we're left alone to get on with the job and there's still some decent banter and mutual piss taking, just as it was back when i started.
Goosebumps all over . I remember as a dutt going with my late father in his “ split-screen “ Atkinson , Scammell Crusader and all sorts of others . Crash box gearboxes and such . You really had to be able to drive those beasts oh and no power steering either! Yes I’m a wagon driver myself . Hate the auto bollox we drive now 😡😡😡 . My all time favourite wagon then and still is the Volvo F88 / 89 / 86 . Where I lived in Cardiff, my best mates father owned “ Glyn John Transport “ he had loads of Volvo’s as did Heanor Haulage back in the day . 💪❤️🏴
One of the smartest fleets of 60’s Fodens was the company associated with l think Tate and Lyle Silvertown East London called - Silver Roadways - absolutely immaculate always clean Fodens painted in Silver body work and red trim - if l remember correctly
Brilliant presentation ! Back in the days when hgv drivers were the " knights of the road ". Some lovely old lorries there, nice soundtrack too
That brought back some memories.😊😊
My Father was the Commercial Sales Manager at OG Barnards in Stowmarket Suffolk in the 60s & 70s - Taylor Barnard used to buy countless Mercedes 1418 tractor units through him before switching to Volvos, as at 1:50 when he moved to Duffields in Norwich!
So glad I stumbled across this montage, bought back memories and the music by Ludlow was a great accompaniment
Love the Commer at 9-49 reminds me of that old George Formby song I'm Leaning on a lampost at the corner of our street until a certain little lady comes by
Some very smart Fodens'and a lot of very desirable number plates, excellent video.
Great film of great lorries. Thank you 👍🇬🇧
Great stuff! Even the loads seemed more interesting in those days. Not an ISO container in sight!
Loads of great “ Wagons” and a few Trucks thanks Christopher. I always try to pick out my favourite but then get that engrossed I forget which one 🥇👌🎥👍👏⭐️✅
when my late dad started driving lorries in the mid 60s his firm ran Atkinson borderers, guy big ,erfs, who remembers sitting on the engine between the seats and getting a warm arse 😂😂
I learnt how to load one of these at the age of 19, even drive a forklift off a loading bay over a steel bridge to stuff a container, also learnt to tie a good dolly sheeting & roping,.
Thank you my dear chap for putting this together. In the late 60's when I was 22 I drove for the Kettering Co-op, a Bedford TK petrol, went like stink compared to the diesels. Didn't realise at the time but happy days.
I used to drive a lot of those old Volvo's FL 7 and 10's plus the later ERFs and the Bedford's. There was a huge difference between the ERF's, Bedfords and the Volvo's. When you got in a Volvo it was like driving something from the space age, so much more comfortable.
Love the picture of the Commer artic just about to have a “Greenacre “ so he’s pulled alongside a lamppost.the young lad is in danger 😆
Some golding oldies there.great video...
Another cracking video !!! I particularly love the Hunters European long wheelbase Leyland Beaver tractor and tri axle flat . What a motor!!
Great film, always loved the Thames Trader trucks
The old Foden at 5.00 is still on the road SGG 6 1957 still taxed and tested .. incredible to think it probably outlasted most of the guy's who built her!
Makes me sad seeing all those old British trucks and now not one company left building them here, so many makes back then and all with a character of their own, these days they all look the same!

My Grandpa Bill Butler used to drive lorries back in the day and told me they used to stuff their clothes with old newspapers to keep warm in Winter.
I well remember that Hulland Products Fodern with the incredibly slow air range change.
I had a Bedford KM early 70's not a bad motor, Eaton two speed gave you eight gears, Dennis
Victor transport riding with my dad (60s) dam why did we have to grow up

I drove a Leyland Matador in the early 70s, A VOLVO F12 and FL12 in the late 80s and when I retired I drove an F12 and F16 and the difference between the 1970s and the 2020s trucks is amazing. But what hasn't altered is the speed limits!!. Why? when todays trucks actually stop when you put the brakes on.

Probably rode in a few of them as I used to thumb to Manchester and back from the west country, truck drivers would often stop, looking for some conversation etc.Dont know if anybody does this anymore-talking about the 1970s here.
Lovely times, I was an HGV apprentice back then.
I loved lorries when I was very small, my particular favourites were the ones with two front axles and one rear. The "Chinese Six", as I recently discovered.
@georgerenton965
Жыл бұрын
I once heard that the purpose of the “ Chinese Six “ was to give added traction, but surprisingly it was when backing the trailer into docks too load and unload them. The “ wagon, and drag “ setup where the lorry pulled a “ full trailer “ that has a turntable with a steerable front axle connected with a drawbar, the lorry has a pintle hitch receiver mounted on the front of the chassis rail. When putting the trailer into a dock, the lorry disconnects from the drawbar, then turns around, and hooks up to the drawbar facing the trailer. The driver can then control the the trailer by pushing the drawbar in the direction required to steer the trailer into position, however if the trailer is loaded, and the road surface is say, cobblestones, and it’s slick, then the front of the lorry might slide of to the side one way or another, there by not permit the driver to have full control to direct the trailer where it needs to go. I remember seeing a few of these when I was young growing up in Scotland, but I’ve never seen a Chinese six in North America. Can anyone tell me if this is factual ? I do recall back in the day, how slimy the cobbles where in and around docks, and markets where fresh fish in boxes packed with ice would be handled. Does it ever rain in the UK ? 🤣

Here is a brief summary of the demise of British truck manufacturers Leyland took over : > Albion 1951 > Scammell in 1955 > Thorneycroft in 1962 > AEC in 1968 > Guy in 1982 (by virtue of taking over Jaguar who had bought Guy in 1961) Then Leyland went bust, buses were taken over by Volvo and trucks by DAF. DAF then went bust and was bought by Paccar. Iveco took over : > Ford commercial vehicles & tractors in 1984 & discontinued the marque > Seddon-Atkinson in 1991 Western Star (USA) then MAN (D) took over ERF, marque ceased to exist in 2007 Paccar (USA) took over Foden 1981 Bedford (owned by General Motors since 1910) ceased production & using the marque in 1990

When did lorries become trucks and distance drivers become trampers?😂😂😂

Strictly speaking, if it's articulated it's a Lorry. If it's rigid, it's a truck.
@robwilde855
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it's the gradual and seemingly inevitable Americanization of the language that degrades so many of our words. All the time I was a long-distance lorry driver we drove lorries or wagons. There were no trucks, of whatever kind or wheel arrangement. Only the Yanks had trucks. But that came to an end twenty or thirty years ago - at first only among non-lorry-drivers, of course, but now even some of them talk about their 'trucks'. It also creeps in at the same time from other directions, because so many people from the Continent or Asia now learn their English using material made by Americans. We just have to accept it, I suppose, unpleasant though it is, because there's no way to stop it.

Count all the British trucks and spot how many were sleepers. It was the seventies before British trucks took this into consideration. The trucks were shit, then came the swede’s. Proper lorries.
thank christ someone invented volvo and scania otherwise we would still be driving these gaffer spec shagheaps today. i drove about 70% of whats on here,so im aware of the difference. no wonder british truck manufacturing went down the pan with the standard of design and workmanship.
The Volvo FL series cab was in my opinion the worst 80s design , cramped and uncomfortable , i hated it , i sometimes would turn up late for work just to avoid being allocated an FL unit , Scania's ( at that time ) were far superior .
