Tru-Cool LPD 47391 Unbox & Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you already follow the channel, then you might have already seen the video where we talk about this cooler and the specific application that we wanted to try it out on. This here is a broader overview for anyone who might be thinking about picking it up, but wants to see what is looks like and what is included.
All in all, this cooler has turned out to be much more capable than the stock Cummins cooler it replaced and has kept out temps in check (except for stop and go towing with a 17k load). The most impressive thing about that is that we have also deleted the stock liquid to liquid cooler that come they come with from the factory. So this guy is taking the full brunt of cooling the transmission in a 3500 4x4 05 Dodge Ram. Pretty impressive.
Another thing that I want to include here is that this version (#47391) does not include the cold weather bypass. We live in the South and almost never see temps that are cold enough to need it.
If you want to check out the cooler on Ebay ( that's where we got the best price) Feel free to use our Link and not only get a great deal, but also help support our channel! (It worth mentioning that is doesn't cost you anything extra!)

    My Brother just ran across a guy who had used the same cooler but on his Duramax. Apparently, they have chronic issues with high trans temps?

    The testing you guys are doing with these coolers is the exact same testing I’m doing with electric fans, I’m currently testing the Lincoln mark viii right now on my Ram 2500

    Thanks for the great video. I’m getting ready to order this exact cooler but my application is for a street 65 Coronet with a 3500 stall. The transmission is upgraded as well. I haven’t heard of anyone using one of these for performance. My transmission guy suggested one of these because of the stall. Thoughts would be much appreciated. Btw I subscribed 👍

    gio0829 that’s very reassuring to know that high street stalls function good. I just fired it up tonight after months of working on it. Tomorrow morning is my first test drive, I also installed a transmission temp gauge just to be even more careful. Hopefully I will be laying down some burnouts soon👍

    Hi several other channels have mentioned that the fitting is actually 5/8-18 flare and 3/8” is a typo. The other channels were adapting the fitting to -6an or -8an instead of using the barb fittings.

    Have you ever had a cooler line blow off while driving and loose all the fluid that the truck just revs up. This happened to me the other night. Just wondering if it would have caused damage to the transmission.

    As long as you pull over and shut it off right away I don't see how serious damage could have been done, the gears won't engage with no fluid so it's not like you could keep driving. I have seen this happen several times and experienced it once and never saw any damage caused by it. However, if you keep running the engine for an extended period of time with no fluid, the transmission's oil pump may be damaged by running dry. Exactly how long you would need to run it to damage the pump I do not know.

    We mounted the ports down because of spacing and line routing.

    70440charger what blue fittings did you use for the cooler? 5/8?

  • @70440charger

    @70440charger

    Those are 3/8 npt to 10an fittings. The cooler is tapped for 3/8 fittings, but they are not NPT so they don't have a taper. We bought a 3/8 npt tap and gave it a taper. For our application we were going for a good flow rate, so we also drilled the center out to match the I.D of the 3/8" fitting. We used pressurized air to keep the shavings from trying to go up into the cooler.

    is there a transmission cooler on a manual transmission?? As far as I know that's only for an automatic.

  • @70440charger

    @70440charger

    Depending on the type of Manual transmission you can buy some pretty cool finned coolers that bolt on to the actual case of the transmission, but I haven't run across a Manual trans cooler with lines that go to the front of the truck. Maybe some body else on here has seen it though? Great question man!

    Hey Jerin, if memory serves me correctly it is categorized as a plate and fin cooler. We is much more efficient than the tube and fin, but not as good as the true stack plate coolers. Hope that helps some!

    Why are you installing it upside down, you will have air pockets in the radiator it has no way to bleed out the air. Check the website.

    Thanks for taking the time to leave a message. I am not sure if we explain it in this video or if it is in the video that we did that is specific to the 05 dodge ram 3500 that we installed it in, but there is not enough room for the 8an lines that we were using to clear the radiator supports. We ran it for several thousand miles and it worked like a champ. We also spent a couple hours comparing the flow path and the potential to the stock cooler and concluded that there is the potential for air pockets in both set ups. We also did a check for air bubbles and the 47rh that it was hooked to seemed to have enough flow volume that is sufficiently pressurized the tru-cool as to force the air out. After 3 or 4 check there was no emulsified air in the output line stream. Thanks again for the message and if you try the tru-cool, I hope you enjoy it!
