Sean Bean played Odysseus superbly, a very underrated performance. The way he pushes himself to the front row seats of the duel with the relaxed authority of a statesman. Then gawks in disbelief at the superior swordsman ship of Hector. Even the way Odysseus is shaken and look of desolation tinged with anger and shrinks back a little amongst the mixed gathering of comrade and foe as he sees ‘Achilles’ slain before his eyes, is masterclass acting without a single word said. Then when he does speak it’s to agree with Hector to postpone hostilities as what they’d witnessed was enough tragedy and he was already thinking about the huge implications once Achilles learns of Patroclus death. Achilles right hand man - Eudorus (Vincent Reagan) is paralysed in disbelief too but mighty relieved it was ‘only’ Patroclus, but not thinking as much what it meant to Achilles, another great performance just by acting expression.

I dont think Achilles was that much better than Hector when they thought.. I'd say that their skill was pretty much at same level, but the main difference for me was Achilles stamina, he didn't get tired while Hector was already too exhausted. If you watch their fight again, during the whole fight Hector stays all defensive to see what he could do to win, but after seeing that Achilles would not get tired, he just gives up his defensive mode and go full offensive, he knew that would be the only way to try win the fight because playing defensive was just making it worse for himself.

Hector clearly understands the combination of sword and shield better than Patroclus. He keeps himself stationary and parries Patroclus’ attack effectively, which hinders Patroclus’ movement with a lot of recoil that makes him unstable. Also, Patroclus uses too many wide swing together with his shield, make him even more unbalanced and have to charge longer for the next attack.

I mean it kind of happens like that in the Iliad, the original story. They didn't just give up for the day like in the movie here. Hector was regularly smashing the Greeks daily, driving them back among their ships. From Wikipedia: 'Hector takes Achilles' armor from the fallen Patroclus. The Achaeans fight to retrieve Patroclus' body from the Trojans, who attempt to carry it back to Troy at Hector's command. Antilochus is sent to tell Achilles the news, and ask him to help retrieve the body. When Achilles hears of Patroclus' death, he screams so loudly in his grief that his mother, Thetis, hears him from the bottom of the ocean. Thetis grieves, too, knowing that Achilles is fated to die young if he kills Hector. Though he knows it will seal his own fate, Achilles vows to kill Hector in order to avenge Patroclus.'
