    Um, Rome did learn some lessons along the way to become that empire... But listening to the expert wasn't one of them. By in large the experts which there were, you might call them commanders - largely took what they wanted to some extent. It was other innovations that made them great.

    6:09 that tactic he did back there has been the classic strategy on how to defeat units like chariots and Elephants. Massed formations would form columns of men, hurling missiles upon the enemy chariots or the enemy Elephants. Examples of this tactic used are at Gaugamela by the Macedonian Hypaspists and the Agrianian skirmishers and at Zama by Roman legions and the Velites skirmishers of Scipio Africanus.

    In the Battle of Zama, which the Romans, against all odds, win against not just a numerically superior army (50,000+ vs less than 40k) but one with dozens of thousands of strong veterans, I'm willing to lay the conjecture that the Carthagenians lost because their elite veterans were thinking more of their positions and prestige rather than working together as a team like Maximus inspired the slaves here to do. Just imagining that the Roman chariots, at the end of the battle, laying a curbstomp on those more worried about making the other guy look bad rather than survival... The Roman army had no choice but to work as a team or be annihilated. That's how they were able to sustain the brutal assault by Hannibal's armies. It may be a lesson that titles and names ultimately mean little. Anyone can become a solider. Not everyone can become a team player.

    One of many excellent scenes from an excellent movie. Maximus doesn't waste any time putting his leadership skills to the test to flip what would have been a one-sided exhibition match into a slaughter. All of the "main" slaves have character development here, too; Juba's ferocity and skill with spears, Hagan's strength and speed blocking an arrow, Proximo's glee seeing his gladiators emerge victorious against impossible odds.

    You know what the awesome thing about this is? It's basically a giant 'fuck you' from actual Rome to the mockery that Commodus created. Scipio would personally strangle Commodus for the mockery of his proud ROMAN legionnaires by portraying them as (female) chariot riding archers. They weren't - they were the old fashioned pre-Marian checkerboard of heavy foot and auxiliaries... among whom were the Triarii, old grizzled and nigh-unbreakable veterans whom acted as the reserve... of which Maximus' team resembles with their shields and spears. And so the "barbarian horde" in this mockery of a recreation better resembles the actual Roman army that fought and won at Zama, is the one that destroys the mockery of the actual army. Which really works on a subtle symbolic level - for all the liberties the movie took (like portraying pila as thrusting spears), it still manages to nail certain things incredibly.

  • @fighterck6241

    @fighterck6241

    6 жыл бұрын

    I guess the point was to create an unassailable advantage for the "Romans" by giving them and easily predictable advantage, ie chariots. Commodus wanted to "recreate" a great victory, but it's difficult to do so by simply putting the gladiators out there and telling the "Carthaginians" to lose (ie die on purpose). So he gave the "Romans" chariots and placed the side that was supposed to lose on foot. This ended up backfiring miserably because one of the gladiators on the ground was an actual Roman general and several of the "barbarians" were former soldiers who understood what Maximus wanted to do. Yes it's ironic from a historical perspective that Commodus got the actual tactics more or less reversed, but the crowd weren't historians and would hardly have cared. He just wanted to create a spectacle for them to cheer the glory of their empire even if it was based on a lie or at best a faulty interpretation of their history. All that mattered to him and the crowd is that the right side won. Propaganda at it's finest.

    Nailed it bro, the demographic of the 'barbarians' is fucked up - it also i think is meant to show the over confidence/arrogance of Commodus and the fact he has no idea what to do, that and Maximus is a don of a leader

    Also most cavalry the Romans used in that era were contracted from local areas. Celtics and gallic people were used, some of the most famous were the namidian cavalry that switched sides after Hannibal didn't enter rome and had to go back. Those namidian cavalry had previously forced the battle of cannae to play out like it did.
