    My first reaction to the Man City players that asked to come off was they didn't want to take a penalty and bottled it before the end of the game, but after thinking about it, how could they foresee the result when there was 10 mins to go in normal time and then extra time, anything could happen. Its more likely that they felt they couldn't give 100% and it needed players on the pitch given the magnitude of the game to have everyone at 100% and wanted to give the team the best chance. Most players moan and whine when they are brought off, unless Pep is your manager that is. However I can see why De Bruyne was tired, but Haaland I am not sure about, the strikers do the least running of all the team, plus he didn't do much when he was called on.

    The problem I’m seeing more and more with City is Pep instills such a possession obsession ethos into his side that it eventually makes them very predictable. Grealish and Silva do not provide any width and just constantly cut the ball back inside and recycle possession over and over again. On top of that, Walker, Gvardiol, Akanji, and Ake do the same thing as fullbacks. They constantly cut the ball back instead of putting in any service from out wide. The end result is everything is far too narrow and teams are increasingly just packing the box against City and making it very difficult for both Alvarez and Haaland to get any type of consistent service. Wenger said it best very recently. He said De Bruyne is the only City player aside from Haaland who wants to “progress” the ball while the rest want to “possess” the ball. The problem becomes when the possession is so extreme, bordering on an almost OCD like obsession with never losing the ball, that it actually hinders the attack and makes it far too predictable.

  • @MCFCTheMadHatter

    @MCFCTheMadHatter

    12 күн бұрын

    Great point. And that is the opposite of what Pep did last season as he was flexible in his tactical approaches to games sometimes even letting the opposition have more possession and was rewarded with a treble. Yet what does he do this season? Revert back to the same old intractable self from his obsession with the possession to playing a such a high line with players who cannot execute it properly over and over, it is like he has forgotten everything he should have learned from last season. I would also say that the players are too afraid to lose the ball in possession with few exceptions and do so to the team's detriment. Slow buildup cancels out most of Haaland's talents and will always allow teams with a low block plenty of time to reset and have 11 in front of the ball thereby making it nearly impossible to score against. Again, Pep's inflexibility on full display. This doesnt mean we should have a basketball game, but certainly a few quick transitions would be useful and could have helped with the attack

    @MCFCTheMadHatter Great points as well. I’m glad someone else can tactically see what’s happening instead of the typical “Haaland is a ghost” rhetoric that’s all the craze now. Likewise, far too many people are obsessed with trolling Haaland that they don’t realize the exact same thing is happening to Alvarez when he plays the forward position. Alvarez gets nothing in the middle of the pitch and is instead forced to go out wide to get touches on the ball. But then he invariably just recycles the ball himself. The biggest problem facing City is teams have overwhelming realized they can’t play an open space, back and forth game with City. Luton were naive enough to try that in the FA Cup, got destroyed 6-2, and Haaland showed what type of player he actually is in a typical game where the game is not just camped out in the opposition’s defensive third all game long. Like you said, Pep needs to intentionally concede more possession and actually force teams up the field. Because teams are taking away two thirds of the pitch nearly every game against City and making the pitch tiny. The contrast is obvious if you watch City and watch virtually every other game. The pitch looks tiny in City games because it’s just played in the opponents third of the pitch the majority of the game by design.

    It's all well and good comparing the Premier League to the Bundes Liga but the winter break only works in Germany because there is only one domestic cup over there and 4 less league games. So my point being there are less fixtures every season to be fulfilled in the first place which allows there to be a 4 week break mid season. If footballers really are playing too many games now then either get rid of International friendlies or the only other option is you would have to start the season earlier or end it later. Suddenly inserting a 4 week winter break wouldn't address the problem I mean if anything it would make it worse because all of the fixtures played over those 4 weeks would just get moved and then you'd end up with fixture congestion in other parts/months of the season instead of the winter.

I think this is why some high profile players have left the club over the years as well because it is a work ethic where you just suffer under that manager. Also pep has been honest with the media because in a way its calling out those players. What would you think of your manager and how would you reflect if you were publicly named as someone too tired to play and wanted to come off?

Surely if a player looks jaded the manager should know, I would just leave them out ,if its a week with no midweek game they get10 days 2 weeks off .

    How can these top players complain about being tired. Half the game they are at walking pace. Put them up against a top class cyclist who rides in the Tour De France and they wouldn't live with them. Also a top tennis player who has to play five sets. A top class athlete running a marathon at less than five minute pace. These players should thank their lucky stars that they train a couple of hours a day , if that, and play ninety minutes, or they are on the field for that length of time. Time to stop pampering them

    I have to question the Premier League with the new rule. The Premier League matches now frequently have 50 or 55 minutes half's now which Serie A do not have. Look at the injuries the big sides that are also playing in Europe had. Over a match or two it won't be too bad but when you're facing opposition sides that play matches with a 47 minute half like the Premier League had last season then over time it surely must make a difference

    Well, City won the treble last season which means they played the maximum number of games in a season. And towards the end of the season the games were more intense with much more at stake than a regular league game. There's the travelling, the media availability, the club PR events, which now includes going to far away lands and playing exhibition games. For City, it was just a few short weeks before they were back at training camp getting ready for pre-season. And of course they have to workout a good deal of the time. The more you succeed, the more you have to work to keep succeeding. Tired? Exhausted? I can understand it.

    If they didnt ask to come off and Pep claims they did, he may have a problem. I can't see Haaland being tired. KD maybe because he's coming off an injury, however wasn't he recently substituted and he was pissed off. I can't see him asking to come off, but maybe. I just don't see it in Haaland. If that's case, that's wrongly putting it on those players andI wouldn't be please if he did that to me.

    I’ve never understood why we have 2 domestic cup competitions in this country? What’s the point? Everybody else has 1 and that makes sense. Plus, even when you win the League Cup everybody just turns round and says, it’s a worthless trophy anyway.. So what’s the point in it?! Common sense would be to have the Premier League and FA Cup. The next logical step would be to reduce the number of teams in the Premier League to 18. That way, the league is more competitive, there’s fewer games and you can take a Winter Break. Plus getting rid of replays, you’re losing a good amount of games which means players aren’t getting burnt out by the end of the season and there will be no excuses for England in major tournaments. Could even use the “League Cup” as a trophy for clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two. Or turn it into a British Cup and allow the likes of Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish teams into it.

    Players arent helped by fifa and uefa making more and more international fixtures or club competitions. The FA have taken a step in the right direction by doing away with cup replays as of next season. But why the English and scottish Fa dont move fixtures to aid their clubs in the latter stages of european competition is a mystery.
