For people asking, the bit is 5-sided, so an Allen wrench won’t work.

I saw an ad for these on Facebook. $30! And the ad doesn’t mention that these can be used only on certain prepared TroyBilt engines. It says ANY gasoline engine. But NOT on my Husqvarna weed whacker or my Stihl chainsaw. Thanks for saving me money.

know this is an old post, but wanted to thank you for posting. I bought a Troy on sale (long time ago) and got this little bit at the same time ... but with 'guys' around I never used it until today. With no guy to pull and my bad back ... well this saved me!! Thank you for showing how easy it is to use - mine worked like a champ!!

I have rheumatoid arthritis and I have done this mod on virtually all of my equipment with a pull start. It works great and doesn't kill my arm, other than my DeWalt drill is fairly heavy to hold.

Hope this better than the Rachet adapter which did not turn follow clockwise and loosing the nut on the motor. The nut got flown away after starting motor. Thanks. Another senior appreciate this video. Bought this and hope will turn start my outboard 2 strokes motor on kayak.

My work around the pentagon was to use 1.25" of 1/2" square steel bar, pop that into 1/2' drive socket which fits the nut on the engine. Chuck the socket and 1/2" bar into a lathe. Drill out the square stock with a 6mm drill. The pentagon fits snugly in the 6mm hole. Drill and tap a hole drilled on one of the sides of the square stock to take 4mm grub screw to secure the stock onto the pentagon shaft. If the socket has a tendency to slip off the square stock, put a grub screw on that too. Then away you go.

I just bought one, I had a back operation and don't want to risk pulling a string. The trimmer is probably too heavy to lift but I am going to try it anyway. I have had good luck with Troy Bilt.

Hi Jeff. This trimmer has been tough, but unfortunately I think she’s about to kick the bucket. Starting to knock and leak oil. I went out last week and bought a Kobalt 40v battery powered trimmer. I really like it. Keep that in mind to avoid pulling a string. BTW I wish I would have got the 80v.

I have been looking to find out the socket size in the crankshaft. In the video, he says 3/8 & 5/16, which is it? Someone mentioned it was a 5 sided socket, do you know if that is true? I was hoping to use a broken allen key.

@@JasonsAustraliana Spend the $10 and get the widget from Lowes. The one-directional bearing is critical, NOT to stop you from cranking the engine in the wrong direction but to stop the engine from destroying your drill if it takes off and you can't pull the Allen wrench out in time.

for every other pull start motor , get, " Performance Tool W32114 1/2" Drive Ratcheting Adapter" , $15 on EBUY. you will need to take the pull start off. just a few screws. just get a small cordless drill and bring it with you ,if it stalls out somewhere.

  • @immrnoidall

@@victork3397 yup. 15 is the cheapest. to use it on a drill or screw gun you will need a 1/2 in, male, to screw gun bit adapter. and whatever size socket for the nut on your flywheel. these troy built trimmers, have a hole built in to the center of the pull start/flywheel cover with an odd size that will take only "their" ratchet thing and start motor. other trimmers will need to be modified to get at the flywheel nut. you can just use a drill but the ratchet thing is safer . so the drill doesn't kick back when an engine starts up , but you didn't get it off the nut in time. .there are lots of videos about it. it works. just paste Performance Tool W32114 1/2" Drive Ratcheting Adapter into ebay search. I tried to leave a link to it but youtube would not let me.

healthyamerican I can’t speak for a craftsman, but if the rope broke on my trimmer, the tool would still start the engine. However, my trimmer is getting old and now needs a combination of the jumpstart tool AND pulling the rope. I replaced my rope as well and I couldn’t really find a good video so I just did it with no help. It’s not terribly difficult, but it did take about an hour for me. Good luck!
