Troubleshooting a Replaced DualSense Joystick

If you have replaced the joystick module or potentiometers in your DualSense controller and it didn’t go so well, in this video, I go over some troubleshooting ideas to help track down the problem.

Super helpful video, thank you! 2 of my barely used PS5 controllers developed a joystick drift after several months of usage, which pissed me off a big time. First time I tried to replace pot wipers, which helped for a month or so. After the problem returned, I understood that my best chance to get a properly working controller without buying a new one is probably soldering in fresh pots. As it was my first soldering job, it took me a long time and I had severely scraped the board around where the right joystick is placed while trying to desolder it. After soldering in new ones, I noticed that the right joystick doesn't react at all in Y axis and is acting like being stuck to full up. I don't know anything about microelectronics so it was highly unlikely I'd be able to find the problem on my own. But with your super detailed and clear instructions, it took me ~40 mins from starting a video to having a fully working controller again (trace from central pin on Y pot was damaged)! Thank you a bunch mate, you've saved me a lot of time and stress.

@@gmrpnk211 I damaged a trace while desoldering one of the pots. Since it was my first soldering job (apart from "connect this 2 wires together" sort of stuff), I haven't had enough experience and have set up a temp too low for my iron, which was barely melting this type of solder. As a proud member of primate order I applied brute force kinda "scraping" semi-molten solder. 🐵

I got a problem, a pin is stuck on one of the potentiometer's ground, and so the new potentiometer wont fit unless I fold it a bit, what would you recommmend doing? I've thought about soldering a jumper from the ground to one of the frames or from the pin slot to the frame but I'm not sure P.D: the stuck pin is practically impossible to extract without damaging the board

It should be fine to run a jumper. Have you tried a stainless steel sewing needle? Plenty of fresh solder and heat. Then use the needle to clear the hole. Make sure the needle is not gold-plated, solder will stick to that.

Will these troubleshooting steps also work with the hall effect joysticks? I replaced my potentiometer with hall effects. The right stick was stuck in the extreme left (Rx= -1.0). The magnets appeared to be centered so I replaced with a different Hall Effect joystick and now there is no response in either axis. The 4 GND posts are connected and I get continuity there. Solder on the other pins looks OK (probably should have used flux),. I wonder if I damaged a pad. But I do wonder how I can test the HE joystick to determine if that's the problem or maybe I damaged something else during rework.

Yes, you can use most of the same troubleshooting ideas. The center pin resistance will be different for the Hall sensors. All the way left will be a center pin output of close to 0 volts. Look very closely for damage to the 1.8-volt traces to the Hall sensors.

@@metalplasticelectronics354 thanks for the info. I’ll check if your other HE videos mention anything about the correct voltage or resistance readings. I’m almost sure I damaged a trace or a pad when desoldering the original sticks from the board. Had (and still do) a hard time using a solder sucker/wick and couldn’t get all the old solder removed. When I have time I’ll try to troubleshoot using your tips. Your videos are very helpful and give good explanation.

Good afternoon! I'm having a problem with my controller after I replaced the joysticks that I'm hoping you might shed some light on. The joystick seems to be fine with full range when everything is taken apart. Whenever it is all screwed back together, It doesn't cover the entire circle. It misses the outer edges of a couple sections. If I take off the little trim ring around the housing it goes just fine. I've done calibration and centering multiple times with no change. This is the second time I replaced the joystick with the same effect so I'm wondering, What the heck could cause this?

Are the couple of sections that it will not reach at the same edge? If you can send me a screenshot of the gamepad tester circularity to mike@mlplel.com I can take a look and see. Are you replacing with regular joystick or Hall effect joysticks?

@@metalplasticelectronics354 I can absolutely take pictures when I get home. If I remember correctly, it doesn't reach the edge on the top left and bottom right. I used a ksilver hall effect sticks there because they are known to not have latency issues. Do you ever need to trim any plastic off the sides of a joystick when installing on the dualsense? I noticed the plastic on the left side is resting on a tiny resistor. This is a gen 2 controller btw.

Unless Sony decides to supply a program to calibrate the joystick, it’s best to find a replacement that is a close match to the original, and that’s not so easy to do.

Very helpful video. Thank you for that! I have a question. I've replaced the potentiometer three times (before watching this video) think that the problem was them. Apparently i was wrong. The problem still persist. The left joystick still seems stuck on full left. Do you now how i can fix this?

Full left would be 0 volts of output from the joystick for that axis. You will need a meter to see where the voltage is being lost.
