Hall Effect Joystick Revisited - Tracking Down That Different Feel

Ғылым және технология

The different feel from the Hall effect joystick is slight but very noticeable. The difference didn’t seem to come from a mechanical effect. In this video, I look at the signal differences between the Hall joystick and a regular joystick.

It looks like it just needs a pull-down resistor...

yes... but it should be built in =( because it makes no sense to have a pull-down with a normal pot joystick, and the hall-effect one are meant to be a drop-in replacement, as far as i understand.

I don't think that the game controller has a pull down resistor either. On it's own a potentiometer produces a voltage that is linear to the shaft angle (if it is not a logarithmic one). With a resistor added that relationship becomes non-linear, because there wll be a non shaft angle dependent constant in either the nominator or the denominator of the equation. That is not saying that a pull down resistor wouldn't help, but that the manufacturer likely has not built this for a circuit with a pull down resistor. The design apparently is either flawed or not used correctly in this demonstration. The Hall effect principle is definitely not the culprit, as it can be used even for high frequency applications

It didn't make the video, but I did try a pull-down resistor. Anything under 200K pulled the voltage down. Over 200K didn't help with the slew rate in any noticeable way. Around 50K ohm did speed up the high-to-low transition time, but pulled the output voltage so low it would be unusable.

@@metalplasticelectronics354maybe reducing some capacitance might help? like an extra ceramic capacitor in series somewhere? it could just be the capacitance of the op-amp like if it uses mosfets or if its some kind of PID controller. it looks like some capacitance is discharging too slowly. or maybe some filter in there is not designed to go the mechanical limit and is getting overvolted and thus saturated?

This is and excellent representation of what not only these sticks have, but the majority of hall sticks. Ok for casual play, useless for competitive. Amazing job on this!

I ordered some of these for my broken controller after seeing your last video, I haven't installed them yet but they felt better physically. Now I feel like waiting a tiny bit more to see if there are any other brands that are better than this one. If you find something please make a vid on it and do a test like this one.

I like the feel of the Hall joystick modules. There should be no drifting with them, and you can center them to match the old joystick. They do have a slightly different feel to them. The next one I replace I intend to use one of the Hall effect joystick.

I guess reactivity is the price to pay for a more durable "no dead-zone" joystick. Would be interested to see if all hall joysticks behave the same as this one. What about the hall joysticks for the switch or steam deck

I don't know about other Hall effect joysticks; these are the only ones I have. But from a comment, it sounds like this version of the joystick has filtering that the previous versions did not. It may be that the design overdid the filtering a bit.

If I remember correctly, the Dreamcast had the Hall sensors mounted on the controller PC board. I may be mixing that up with another controller. I'll have to look up the optical joystick. I don't remember ever tearing one of those apart.

Yes, the DC one is a completely different design. There is also due to it a much larger sense area, which is also by nature uniform in all angles I think.

Hey man I have been watching your troubleshooting video on a dualsense controller, because I am experiencing some issues right now. After replacing the analogues my controller just blinks 3 times orange and shuts down. I looked up everything on the internet and still not finding any solution that helps me. This happened me on 2 different pcbs. Never experienced something like this on a ps4 controller. I cannot find any information about this that why I am contacting the master mind number one

If you have a meter, you need to check for 1.8 volts. There may be a short somewhere. If you don't have a meter, all you can do is look over the PC board very closely and see if you see any solder where it shouldn't be.

Nice effort you have put in to characterize this. The slew rate should be defined in the datasheet if you have a part number for the sensor. The output stage slew rate could be improved by a better impedance match if it is just a collector drive, I would have thought it more likely a push pull (totem pole) though.

looks like you got some capacitance on there (assuming analog output). i like sensors with digital output as you don't have to worry about a clean signal path (this is not suited to drop in potentiometer replacements). sensor filtering is usually a feature of those types of sensors. check the data sheet.

The only capacitance is the wireing and the 10X scope probe, so not much. I did try with an 18 nF cap on the output, but it really didn't make much difference. Why they are filtering the low to high transition and not the low to high transition just seems strange.
