Great report. Interesting history. As I understand it this is basically was created by overflow from the Colorado river. With the future of the Colorado in such doubt, things look bleak. At this point, I should think the best use of any funds would be to mitigate and clean up the pollution that is there. Spending money to restore it as a tourist or even a livable area seems like a waste of money. It’s source of water is going away, might as well accept that, until nature swing back the other way. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Thank you for making your vid. The more exposure & awareness of the Salton Sea’s plight and the dangerous effect it will have on so many people’s lives, nature & the environment, the better. In the early 70’s to late 70’s our family & friends enjoyed the west side of the Salton Sea around Salton City. We camped and off-roaded in Truck Haven. We even stayed at the Salton Sea RV Resort in Salton City that had covered & finished, natural mineral hot spring pools. The Sea was declining terribly even then. And many more I think “Bring the Pacific Ocean to The Salton Sea”, all through gravity flow is the best solution. From the Sea of Cortez using the dryed-out natural waterway from the Colorado River to the border at Calexico then tie into the existing Alamo River & New River flowing north (again all by gravity) that originally dumped into the Salton Sea but falls short now because of the receding shoreline) And build desalinization plants on each side of the border to benefit each country. Yes a few Billion Dollars for this. But look at the collasal benefit for all. Spend this now to benefit all. Because eventually it will be spent on legal compensation to all those affected if it is not brought back. Keep the faith and stay involved with the solution.

Let's face it.. this issue is not even close to the top of the list of expensive problems faced by California. Things might be different if Sonny Bono missed that tree.

A great, very well balanced feature report. Well done. They should either let the Pacific back in - probably quite a cheap project, considering the reported figure of less $1b. Or, let it dry up and use the toxic dust/mud as part of a concrete mix, to solidify the bed to stop it blowing up in dust storms! Its only going to continue to dry up - 19 of the hottest years in recorded history have been in the last 20 years, the sea has no chance! Probably best to let the Pacific back in. Cover a lot of the sea in floating solar and use the power to desalinate the water and clean out the toxins, to be used on farm land! Done!

You know maybe the people getting paid to do all the studies, testing and planning should get the money in installments with their final and biggest payment only being when they actually have a working plan implemented. Maybe it would weed out those who might not be committed and also inspire them to actually accomplish something in the end instead of milking the job until the money runs out. Also if California hasn't held up its end of the contract, threaten to divert the water back into the lake from agriculture. That might get their attention. I do hope they are able to get all their bureaucratic acts together to fix this, for all involved.

Only people can fix this problem; don't count on the government; there is a way to begin, but who would listen? The Indian Tribes? Kenny Morrison from Ecomedia Compass? Few solutions exist that do not cost billions.

If they made a canal or aquaduct system with control valves from the Colorado River they could fill the Salton Sea and drain the excess water through a spillway and canal system into the Sea of Cortez.

There is a canal, the All American Canal, that runs on the east side of the Salton Sea. Back in the day when it was getting to much flow they had a drain that let the over flow to run into the Salton Sea, just passed Mecca. That canal runs all the way to Palm Springs. Oh, and there is a tunnel through the mountain to Hemet.They had talked about cutting a canal to the Sea of Cortez ( Gulf of California) to bring ocean water into the Salton Sea, because the sea is minus 230 feet, now more. I heard that the rise land between Mexico and the USA is like 46 feet above sea level (ocean level). So that your looking at taking the land down to even 20 feet below sea level and you could have a natural flow to the Salton Sea and would not need to pump it!! But that would take both Governments to come to an agreement.

Use to traverse with a Semi from Imperial Valley along west side of Salton Sea up to I-10 at Coachella, closest I ever got. Stayed overnight in sleeper once west of lake, had a nice Sea Air smell, looked like lots of precautions to prevent dust storms was going on 2013, 14, 15...

A Salton Sea "Restoration" would involve draining the lake and restoring the desert. The Salton Sea was formed because of an irrigation accident.

In the early 1980's me and my friend stopped at the salton sea for the night. We walked into the water to about our knees. When we got out of the water and our legs dried. There was a white film on our legs. I thought it was salty then. Now it is 66% higher in salt then it was back then. One of the coolest things that happened during about the same time period, was driving down the 111 hwy and seeing a B52 flying low over the water and then over the road. I was mighty cool seeing that,. The pilot was so low, I could see him flying by over the road.

If they dig a little bit of the canal to the Sea of Cortez each year and fill it top layer with concrete Reed bar some day the sea way to the Sea of Cortez would be completed 💯%!

I'm afraid that all that's going to happen is band-aid solutions until we face up to the fact there's no real answer that doesn't involve a lot of money and putting more water in the lake. I don't know where we're going to get either. Bringing in sea water has drawbacks, but at least it might help the dust problem.

I'm here at the Salton Sea now. Not surprising to see nothing has changed, the beach is still trashed with broken glass and old tires everywhere. Our government can't do anything except bring out the worst in people. Where are the volunteers for a beach cleanup? What happened to the millions of tax payer dollars to clean this place? California has the highest gas tax in the world, why are these roads such a mess?

Did they plant those fish originally or did they come in in the river flow? The 1905 flow.

Corvina is an ocean fish so common sense says they were planted.

Building a canal would make the most sense. But it will cost twice as much as the estimate. Everybody feeding at the trough. Look at the California High-Speed rail projects.

Barnacles? I had been under the impression that’s fish bones the beach is covered with.

The money to restore the Salton Sea would be better spent and cheaper than a High Speed rail to nowhere.

I heard GM is going to mine it for Lithium.

Just think the San Andreas fault is right under the Salton Sea could it be all the weight of the water is holding the San Andreas fault from shifting again last time it shifted there was no lake

The canal from the Gulf of California would start in Mexico in a wildlife habitate. Then the Laguna salada is in parts below the sealevel but in many it is above. Anyhow if a canal is made they could win electricty from the constant flow of water into the lake.

The Federal government just allocated one billion dollars for the failed high speed bullet train connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco. This project will require roughly $85 billion dollars to complete not what the California taxpayer was promised. Consider how one billion dollars for importing gravity fed ocean water by improving existing canals and new ones would be far superior return on investment than rail road transportation.

Frankly if a canal can actually be dug for $800 million, construction should start tomorrow! California has the money and the alternative, doing nothing and facing tens of billions in losses and environmental catastrophe in the future looks like money well spent. Let Gavin Newsom know.

Believe wildlife could with a mix of coconut and possibly tamarisk, I don't think they've tried cheap solutions because that wouldn't leave money left over to take for very little work of planning/"commissioning" actual work to take place.

The brine separated from the water, which would include salts and other toxin/contaminants, would have to go somewhere. I’ve heard rumor of Death Valley being considered for such use. Also saw a rather unique possibility of using solar heated buildings that would help in dissipating brine solution and leaving useable product.

Bringing salty waters of the Pacific ocean into the Salton Sea is killing it faster. As the ocean water evaporates, it will add more and more salt to the Salton Sea. In a few years, it would be just a giant super salty mess, unusable to birds, and even the salt loving life forms.

Great review of the situation. The ONLY hope is the canal to the sea. Unfortunately, with the liberal crooked government, not likely to happen.

A tunnel to the sea could be a Musk thing.

Trusting a mining co to give back to the community it ravenges is asbout as smart as building a resort town in the middle of the dersert and exectiong it to survive. Seems its as easy as pumping saome water in from the colorasdo but we all know its dead. If only the ignorant usa could admit to its over-use of limited resources (liike water) and poor planning practices that don t work . It would seems theres a reason the indignenous lived there for thousands without issue, yet the white folk cant get through 300 yrs. But dont worry - its the same story here in Australia.

We already frack recovery geothermal wells. Have been for many decades No problem with that here or elsewhere. Nothing to strip mine in Southern California at all. Facts, got any?

i bet a lot of people still got paid. I think the salton sea is just a giant money pot for a lot of people. It's probably made plenty of government officials rich along the way.

The legend of the lost Spanish ship of Lake Cahuilla must be a myth, no evidence in the video shown, not even a Spanish conquistador steel helmet that would of baked their heads walking the 500 miles through the Sonoran Desert to San Miguel de Culiacan 'the closest Spanish settlement', not to mention all manner of other dangers along the way, and why would others watching them from atop desert hills would of cared to rendered them help or provisions ?

They could also stop stealing from the people and give them the capital they need.

Why not use sea water to fill the Salton Sea? It's less saline and a healthy inland sea would not only stop the dust problem but a healthy sea could support fish, birds and a whole new ecosystem. Property values would rise and the 'lost quarter' of California could be resurrected. Dig tunnels and use pipes to pump seawater in and eventually out to give the Sea a proper flow. It would well be worth the investment.

The restoration project had been given $millions or dollars and it has gotten worse. It is so simple to fix and profitable beyond belief. Get Elon musk on it he can figure it out.

cherished. has many of the riches people live or at least own homes or property why the millionaires can live with themselves, they whine for the taxes they must pay haft of them carry the political parties in their pocket so they get their way more than not.
