Trouble at School: Recess Review (EAM)

Фильм және анимация

Recess originally ran on ABC and UPN from 1997 to 2001, with supplemental material still being made up to 2006. Compared to the Disney Afternoon era, where shows would usually run their course across a year or two, a Disney cartoon running for that long was downright absurd. But this was no regular Disney cartoon. It was about school, education, and how television can do a better job at preparing young people for the future than the public school system. The title of this review might sound cynical, but believe me, this is a classic that you should watch right away.

Recess was just a homerun for me. I loved it as a kid and when I found it again as a 6th grader with my buddies. I started looking at it again just for a nostalgic smile 😊😊😊. Thank you for this wonderful video.

I think the episode about the perfect boy was just about accepting that no matter what someone will always be better than you and not hate them for their superiority. Cause they are people too and they can even help you maybe.

Just something I didn't know at the time, but do now - the Ashleys are actually a reference to the 1998 film Heathers, which gets its title from a trio of high school queens, all named Heather, and all with their own colour. Much darker material, considering it's a black comedy movie (I got a bunch of stickers with quotes from the musical adaptation today, such as "Shut up, Heather", "Freeze your brain" and "Step into my candy store"), but I like the fact that the mean girls gang referenced some of the most infamous mean girls of cinema - even Mean Girls itself got inspired from that.

I do have memories of seeing this on TV on Saturday mornings quite a lot. I didn't watch it that much until about six years back when I started catching up. The only episode that stuck with me as a kid was The Game, when every kid on the playground gets addicted to this card game that apparently is so dangerous that kids who play it get to the point where they can't think of anything else. They eventually snap out of it when a kindergartener picks up a kickball or something. And yup, Upside-Down Girl has a pretty obvious model. At least her pigtails hang down instead of sticking straight out.

Before watching the whole video: I can callback the plot of more than one episode (and the movie), despite seeing it years ago. The episode where it's revealed Spinelli's first name is actually Ashley, so she tries to be with the Ashleys, the one where she paints in the ground, but it gets ruined by the water, but she is not sad, because she was already happy to share it... Where Gus steals from a candy shop and feels guilty about it, where Gretchen pretends to be dumber, because she doesn't want to be taken away from her friends to an another school... Where Randall lies about his friendgroup and being the leader of the said group and dating Spinelli, but in the end of the episode his father admits he was also a lone wolf in school, so they bond over it... Where he plagizies jokes from a book and the gang reveals that by finishing "his" jokes, because it got to the point he makes fun of Mikey. There is also the episode where a new guy comes to the school, who is perfect in everything, but he doesn't want to be. There is also the movie, where everyone leaves for Summer, expect TJ, who is devastated without them and he notices that something strange happening to the school. He gathers his friend to help him and he also comes to some mutual understanding with the headmaster. This show is truly memorable. Edit: The movie wasn't the finale surprises me, because it felt like one.

Here’s something I didn’t understand in the movie, don’t most American schools have summer school for students who failed or were behind? Don’t they have summer sports and enrichment classes? Maybe 3rd street likes to pass kids that don’t deserve it

Recess season 1 & 2 were the best but after that I found the show had lost something with the following season's I can't explain what happened but it went so dull. So in regards to the recess movies I found schools out the best. that isn't to say I didn't like the others though

I strongly disagree with Vince being the least developed. He has some of the best spotlight episodes - Big Brother Chad, I Shall Kick No More Forever, and of course one of the GOATs of Recess episodes, Me No Know. I feel Gretchen in particular, and arguably also Gus, are less developed than Vince.
