@consistentlystupid4726 Жыл бұрын
Tropic Thunder is one of the few movies that I would say is a perfect 10/10. Every single person in the cast is absolutely perfect. I'm glad you do talk about all of the actors briefly because I feel like Brandon T. Jackson and Jay Baruchel don't get enough credit in the movie since they're playing the straight men to everyone else's absurdity. I think what truly highlights how well written this movie is the fact that Robert Downey Jr. got nominated for his role. White actors being cast in ethnic roles has been a problem in Hollywood even in modern history. The fact that the movie was able to satirize it (Along with method acting) using the extremely touchy subject of blackface and do so so successfully that the portrayal is met with applause by both critics and audience is quite frankly amazing. I know a lot of people say "Oh this movie could never be made today", but this movie is only 15 years old. Blackface was not acceptable 15 years ago either. It's such a fine line to walk between proper satire, and being actually offensive, and this movie manages it perfectly.

I'm impressed at how you quickly 'got' what they were were doing, even though you hadn't seen many of the movies & memes they were parodying. This may be the most ...meta... movie I've seen. It's very self aware, and while they brutally send-up all these Hollywood clichés (which may be clichés for a reason), there is also a bit of empathy for all the characters, however outrageous they may be. I suspect the reason they got so many 'heavy hitters' in this is because everyone who saw the script recognized someone, or had similar experiences and really wanted to be a part of this self-aware spoof. I don't think anyone in this cast has done better work than they did here. Sure, many of their things are great, but Tropic Thunder is in a class by itself. Thanks for choosing this. It's always fun to see a familiar film with a first-timer. The reactions are priceless.I can also see why you want to watch it a few times. There's a LOT packed into this film, and the more you watch, the more you find. And on the subject of offensive stuff in older movies? Check out Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Most. Offensive. Role.. EVER! It was squirm-worthy at the time, but has only gotten worse with age.

Something she said made me think of something that Laurence Olivier said to Dustin Hoffman on the set of Marathon Man. Hoffman’s character was supposed to have been awake for like 3 days and so Hoffman being a method guy stayed awake for about that long. He kept messing up the scene which aggravated Olivier who was classically trained. He supposedly told Hoffman "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?"

14:00 - He was watching an old episode of Star Trek. I can't remember the name of the episode, but if you can find the scene it's absolutely worth watching. It's some of the most godawful, yet iconically 60s style fight scenes ever made. I don't know why they thought that balling your hands together and bopping somebody with your finger blob would work. Two hands equals double power? I don't know, but it was the go-to fight move in movies back then. Doing a reaction to that scene alone would be awesome actually. Robert Downey Jr has had a long but up and down career. Back in the 80s he was a teen hearthrob who starred in several hit teen comedies and was a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Then he fell into drug addiction and was in and out of rehab for almost 20 years, during which he was unemployable and didn't make any movies; he was one of those "where are they now?" has-beens. Then this movie resurrected his career and showed the world that he could still act, and he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This role got him cast as Iron Man the next year (2009), which re-launched him into the world famous star he is today.

Comedy has always pushed the boundaries of what is appropriate or offensive. This movie could not have been made today because so many people would feign outrage. it wasn't even 'blackface' in a traditional sense..it was about how Hollywood would rather use a white person they know for a part than using the real thing: Italians for native Americans, Mickey Rooney for Japanese, John Wayne for Gengis Kahn, etc, etc, etc.. for it was more commentary on Hollywood than anything (as was most of the movie... I mean man.. they got to take big ol swings at the industry that employs them... and the film made so much money, no one could say anything about that). Tom Cruise got to be that slimey studio head that I'm sure they are all familiar with the type, for instance.

Well, I don't know if the conversation between Tugg and Kirk actually intends to make fun of mentally or physically challenged people. In my perspective, the conversation between Tugg and Kirk clearly explains how Hollywood movies always portray mentally challenged characters in such a way that their disability is not too extreme that the able-bodied audience doesn't find them repulsive. Such characters can still exude positivity and provide wholesome feeling for the able-bodied audience. They are always potrayed as innocent magical souls and often conform to the beauty standards. The best example is Forrest Gump. His disability is neither gross nor too extreme for him to be successful in life even though he mostly got lucky. He is handsome, has a respectable family heritage, is financially sound and has a loving mom who goes to any extent for her son. But, the problem is Hollywood movies always fail to portray characters with extreme mental disabilities who are not blessed with a good family, resources, looks, opportunities or even luck. Well, it's mainly because able-bodied people may find such characters too depressing, aesthetically unappealing or even worse, outrightly repulsive. Audience may not even find anything to relate to such characters. That's the primary reason why we often get to see characters like Forrest Gump in cinema but seldom characters like "Simple Jack". I think this is what Kirk meant when he said "never go full r*tard". I strongly think this single line alone is in itself a satirical dig at the Hollywood's recurring trope of mentally challenged people whose disabilities are not too extreme that they still turn their lives around and are epitomes of innocence and optimism. Of course, it's understandable why people find the use of the "r word" over and over in this particular conversation off-putting or objectionable because the same "r word" has been used since ages as an insult by being completely unsympathetic to the mentally challenged people. They are still seen as outcasts in many parts of the world. But, I think instead of seeing this movie conversation as an insult to a particular group of people, we should focus on how this conversation cleverly exposes Hollywood's age old depiction of mentally challenged people only in a way that is acceptable to the able-bodied audience. Much love ❤.....

Iron Man also came out in 2008, which I think is the *perfect* movie to show RDJ. The character he plays, Tony Stark, is somewhat close to how RDJ was - incredibly skilled but too much fame leading to drug/alcohol problems, who finds his way out. Also it's a GREAT place to start with superhero movies as it's the first Marvel/MCU movie! It's still one of my favourite movies that I love to see reactors react to! It also stands well on its own outside of the MCU! For Ben Stiller, I *really* hope you get to Zoolander at some point! Finally, I like that you talk about the research you do on a movie after you watch it, I do this too! I never used to, and didn't care about references or things I might have missed, and didn't have a lot of actor/movie knowledge, but eventually you build that up, and I feel like this movie is probably going to be a tipping point for you! The part with Ben Stiller running toward the chopper while getting shot up and raising his arms in the air is a parody of the Oliver Stone war movie “Platoon” starring Charlie Sheen. It’s easily one of the best war movies ever made and has a stellar ensemble cast. I highly recommend it. How can you expect to truly appreciate a satire if you are clueless to any of the source material?!?

Robert Downy Jr actually DID stay in character while he did the DVD commentary.😂

This role got him cast as Iron Man the next year (2009), which re-launched him into the world famous star he is today.

it wasn't even 'blackface' in a traditional sense..it was about how Hollywood would rather use a white person they know for a part than using the real thing: Italians for native Americans, Mickey Rooney for Japanese, John Wayne for Gengis Kahn, etc, etc, etc.. for it was more commentary on Hollywood than anything (as was most of the movie... I mean man.. they got to take big ol swings at the industry that employs them... and the film made so much money, no one could say anything about that). It's a bizarre combination! It starts as a satire of the Hollywood system (actors and producers especially) and of Vietnam war movies -- and then becomes a big-budget war movie. One the few movies where the DVD commentary is essential.
Jack Black's preview movie trailer was a spoof of an Eddie Murphy comedy called The Klumps where he too plays multiple characters, most of them fat.
I don't remember if you've watched "School of Rock" yet, but if you haven't, you must. It showcases Jack Black at his finest, his acting, his comedic abilities, his infectious personality, and his musical skills, all without having to be subjected to his normal crudeness. And the child cast is utterly adorable and talented as hell in their own right.

@@Whimsory Yuppers! I kinda figured you'd seen, School of Rock, any Tenacious D fan would have! Ps. Have you seen JoJo Rabbit? Sorry, I hate beating a dead horse, but look at me!! I'm bored, staring at my phone, in a mirror, and it's black n white, whaaat? Ok, hope you are well, More movies please!!!
Ngl you are the first person I've seen react to this movie that wasn't dying while watching it lol.
i'm sure you'll be seeing plenty of the main actors going forward. love that your cat woke up for the director stepping on a mine.
Adrien Brody sold his stuff for The Pianist (2022), he won an Oscar for that film. Leonardo DiCaprio eating the raw meat was the The Revenant (2015), he also won an Oscar for his performance in that film. Dustin Hoffman slapping Meryl Streep was for Kramer vs Kramer (1979), and they both won Oscars for that film.
Everything about this movie is great. They all play off each other so well. And Tom Cruise's performance as Les Grossman is perfect. It's one of the two best comedies of the 00's, the other being Team America: World Police. Which I hope you'll react to some day. :)

Absolutely love this film. It's so well done. Also love your reactions and how involved you get when researching them. I look forward to your reactions for The Usual Suspects and Shawshank Redemption (fingers crossed). Two of my all time favourites.
"What face was that?"...that was a "should have been an outtake face", just like when he practically laughs during that scene. Comedy gold!
Ben Stiller - 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', serious and the comedy is organic.
Someone should have told you that this movie is a satire of several famous war movies. It's always hard to understand satires if you aren't yet familiar with the source material that it's trying to parody. Once you watch the original movies -- Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Rambo 2, Full Metal Jacket, Mission Impossible 3, Predator (which you got with the chopper line), two of which are on the AFI list of all-time best movies (Apocalypse Now and Platoon)-- you'll recognize where a lot of the scenes in this movie came from and why they're funny.
Ben Stiller is in a very serious drama called "Permanent Midnight". Comedy runs in the family, his father Jerry is a comedy legend, and I think his mother is too.

I loved your face when Damien stepped on the mine! : D
Robert Downey, Jr. has been around since the 1980s. Less Than Zero is one that stands out. Soapdish from the 90s stands out. And Kiss Kiss Bang Bang from the 2000s stands out.
I love your analytical mind! It's so rare to see this type of in-depth analysis in reaction videos. And you're so young too! You're doing amazing work, keep at it!
You mentioned Leo Dicaprio's method acting. I believe that was in preparation of The Revenant. It's phenomenal. I highly recommend it.

"The other guy on the cover" hahaha 😆 😂
a really solid Robert Downey Jr. movie outside of the superhero genre is Kiss, Kiss, Bang Bang! It was my first RDJ movie and from what I can see it was his first big movie after his rehab stint. It also stars Val Kilmer. It's worth a watch if you get the chance!

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was the first movie RDJ did since he got sober. Iron Man was his second.
I saw the notification for this and thought, “Oh, no … does she know what she's getting into?” Then she said, “There’s a white guy under there”, and I thought, “Yeah, no”. The post reaction/analysis on Lazarus was spot on, though.
OMG. I can’t wait to begin watching your reaction to this! What a treat got July Fourth. I love your reactions, Whimsory!
Definitely a fun reaction -- I haven't seen anyone else watch this that had no idea who Robert Downy Jr. was! As you Really like Jack Black, I assume you've seen the Kung Fu Panda movies. If you haven't, I Strongly recommend them.

At the beginning you had to let us know that you didn't fart. which went together perfectly with *Jack Black's* preview movie
So innocent, thought the jelly beans were just fun dip.
‘What’s TiVo?” Oh god…I’m only 40, I’m only 40, I’m only 40…
Happy 4th Whimsory. Been enjoying your reviews! Checked out some of your other videos. I have to say that my favorite persona of all is... You being YOU in these movie reviews! 😊 Keep up the great work! I have to leave a request for " My Cousin Vinny ". You will love Marissa Tomei, but who doesn't? And I am really hoping that you haven't seen " The Princess Bride"! It may become your favorite movie ever!! Lol ❤
"Is he just hungry?" lmao
There are few movies I really like watching people react to. It's such a goofy movie, and the look of confusion people have. 😆 Especially for young people who, let's face it, aren't as thick-skinned as us old people are. 😉

The best "offensive" comedy still is Team America. Can't top that.
Hey well, your in an absolutely blessed position to be doing yt & know barely any movies. That just will let you have a TON of first time movie reactions in the future. Good luck I subbed
Tug was watching a classic episode of the original 'Star Trek' where Caption Kirk battles a reptilian alien on the ipod right before he killed the panda.
"I just realized that's Tom Cruise". Literally one of the best reason to watch all of the reaction videos to Tropic Thunder. LOL Though, some of the reactions make me feel REALLY OLD. Never seen an RDJ movie before this? Oy....
In the theater the movie started seamlessly after the real trailers. It was a very confusing few minutes before figuring it out. The funniest start to any movie I've seen! Tobey Maguire actually did win MTV's best kiss award in 2003. He was watching an episode of the original Star Trek, a fight between Captain Kirk and a Gorn.
"the fatties" is a parody of eddie murphy's "nutty professor" for those who didn't catch it
They were absolutely poking fun at the length some method actors will go to 🤣 I think it’s hilarious
Ok, commenting before watching your review. Does your sense of humor fit in here. I'll soon find out...regardless, I love all your reactions so I'm looking forward to this because I can stretch to the demented humor. Keep up the good content ❤
Maybe you should sort the movies you react to (and analyze) by release date. That maybe would lighten up some... confusion. :) But yet, spot on analysis of the movie. And do not fear, I cant see much Reference to Saving Private Ryan in this movie. Much more so to: Platoon, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter and Rambo 2. And hey: I am cool :)
You watched the movie Predator a couple months ago. The guy with glasses cracking jokes directed a movie with Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. He also did a movie called The Nice Guys with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
Love Tom Cruise's acting. Don't think much of him otherwise. I mean, what kind of person eats the afterbirth of his child? Having said that, Tom Cruise's character was my favorite character in this movie.
He was watching Star Trek The Original Series. Kirk was fighting against Gorn!
You have the best movie reviews, by how in depth you go.👍🏼
17:03 "the insults just keep getting worse" 😂 sums it up pretty good. they were mocking hollywood and all the sequels, and greed. little did they know it got much, much worse, they were thinking a 400 mill return was crazy, now nothing but a billion will make them happy. another great reaction! 👍
I don't see any affiliation to saving private ryan in this movie. But there's definitely a reference to the movie platoon.
"I thought it was jelly bean fun-dip." 😂😂😂 Child please don't ever change. Don't let doing movie reactions ruin you absolutely beautiful innocence it is a precious thing that you can't ever get back.
"Satans Alley".. "oh hell yeah, that looks good"... either some important innuendo was missed, or a small window into Whimsorys mind was cracked open a smidge. I do find it funny, that so many American reactors seem incapable of recognizing Tom Cruise in this. His voice is pretty easy to recognise.
Tropic Thunder is one of the best comedies ever made, even if some of the jokes go over your head there's still enough for you to laugh at and I saw this around the time it came out, I was too young to understand all the jokes and references but it was still one of my favourites and I've just grown to understand and appreciate this movie even more
Happy independence day to whimsory and everyone else
Omg… Def do Kung Fu Hustle for your next “need a funny movie”! It is Amazing! This one is also brilliant, so good choice either way! 👍👊😎
Great reaction, please keep them coming!
Trust and believe this movie doesn't spoil Saving Private Ryan.
The song that plays during the opening and throughout parts of the movie is a song called “Adiagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber. I challenge you to listen to that song and not cry.
Hi Whimsory. Another great reaction from you. You spotted Tom Cruise way before I did when I watched this for the first time. In my defence I had not seen him in many films at the time. I really appreciated the satire in the film and how it showed up many Hollywood practises from the past. Have you seen Jack Black in the new run of Jumanji films? It is a video game rather than a board game and he is one of the avatars, brilliant.
I had fun because you had fun. Thanks. Happy 4th of July.
Oh SNAP! I didn't know you reacted to this today. Saw Tropic Thunder in the theater. Remember the Robert Downey Jr. lines as the funniest thing in the film. When he said, "For four hundred years... " I lost it. That was SO unexpected. I was laughing so hard I'm sure I missed what he said after that. Totally did not remember the Tom Cruise Apple Bottom Jeans part. Hilarious.
"He looks so weird now, I never seem him as a white dude". LOL that's so damn funny.
Love your content, keep it up!
The Marvel cinematic universe is a worthwhile watch from Ironman thru to Avengers: End Game, but after end game it goes off the rails and not really worth it anymore. If you do decide to watch them, make sure you go in order of cinematic release.
When Ben Stiller was in the tent in the rain he was watching the original star trek on his ipod.
Can’t say I have ever known anybody who first movie with RDJ was Tropic thunder. For me it was Heart and Souls from 93. I probably watched it on tv in like 1995. Then weird science(1985) not long after that.
