This is an digitalisation of an old '88 VHS tape. Back then there was no HD! But the sound and the music is very good. Enjoy this nice part of history

    Love how these commentators dont talk utter rubbish the whole time like they do today. Can actually listen to the music and watch them march instead of talking to pointless people.

    I was in the army in 88 sadly today's guards are sacks.Oh and girls are getting in now so in five more years they'll be an embarrassment.All in the name of PC.

    What I like about the old trooping the colour broadcast - aside from the drill and troop condition overall - is the manner of commentary and an uninterrupted ceremony which is not being held by recent broadcasts

    Looking at Pirbright drill in the 80's makes you wonder what they're teaching Guardsmen at Catterick nowadays. It certainly isn't Guards drill.

    Dont shout at todays Guardsmen its hate crime and the drill instructor will be punished thats why we have a society of crime and violence the bible says chastise your child and it will save his life the young are dying from drugs and sin sad indeed the nation that forgets God is turned into hell.

    Standards have sadly dropped since moving to Catterick and mixing with the other regiments. The guards depot was a tough place to do your training but it produced better soldiers for sure.

    Earl Lopez there (theoretically) can be 9 Guards today, but it’s too much to transport them around and everything so it’s 6 actually 11 in total could be possible

    I’m so proud of Trooping of the Colour. Tradition at its best. In this year of 2022 watching this one in 1988 is still a wonderful spectacular. Perfect on every way. I love it and I’m so proud to be British. I didn’t realise that the Queen started rising in a carriage in 1988. I thought it was later because I know that Burmese died in 2001. A wonder sight to see. Magnificent. Everything times to the exact minute. At least that can’t be taken away from the British. Amen.

    Its a shame that today they dont march as perfect like this. And you can clearly see in this video they stand tall all with the same height and none are fat. Today its very bad.

    Keijo Mattinen I believe it was 6FT however it was lowered simply due to recruitment obviously after all the cuts many men were dropped therefore the standard of height had to be dropped

    The Best Trooping the Colour was 1985, The Colour being Trooped by the then 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards and even the Queen mother was known to have stated this, our discipline was second to none like our Motto, The highlight of my military career.

    That last remark by Colonel MacFarlane towards the end of the Black Guardsman Richard Stokes was very welcoming, unfortunately he suffered a great deal while in the Regiment and left the Army in disgust in 1990. He later donated his GSM with NI clasp to The National Army Museum.

    This was incidentally, the very first year that the SA80 put in its appearance phasing out the old SLR.

    The SLR should have been updated with rails for optics made a little light using 3 round burst until the scar h 762 came the sa 80 has give nothing but trouble and 556 they are admitting cannot pierce new body armour 762 was always the better round.

    There are six guards since 1993 (including 2019), apart from 2009 which saw 7 guards on parade. In the years before the number of guards varied between 5 guards (e.g.1954) and even eleven guards (1919) with most years having eight guards.

    @@Jeffybonbon I don't think so. The current Army reforms are almost complete and it is said the strength will not see further reductions. The Royal Family themselves however have little influence on MOD decisions.

    Such a disgrace watching trooping the colour this morning 2016 the drill was terrible in comparison far fewer troops on the square and now that the minimum height requirement has been dropped the lines are all over the place

    The guards don't seem to place great emphasis on drill like they used to. There used to be a distinction between the guards and other regiments and corps. You could always spot a guardsman. I blame it on the closing of the Guards Depot.

    I was in the 1st battalion Scots guards but stationed in Germany this year but watched it on television, it was the first time they used the SA80 on it and it just wasn't the same.

    1SG Trooped in 86 with SLR, I was in No4 guard 2SG, 2SG trooped in 87 I was in No2 Guard.. I believe the SA80 may have been used in 88 troop

    - 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards were in Cyprus (from February 88 to February 90) - 1st Battalion Greandier Guards were at Oxford Barracks (Münster, West Germany)

    Prince William was the shining star in this broadcast, Little does EVERYBODY know in this video that He may succeed Her Majesty The Queen as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Unimaginable a kid so bored at Trooping The Colour is now a grown man with 3 children and a very elegant Queenly wife proudly serving the UK, Feeling ever more-so like a King than his father.
