What you gonna do if and when a spoke needs tightening?

I have a couple of questions. 1. Why didnt you just have it laced to a tubeless rim? 2. Are you not worried that the rim isnt designed for a tubeless tyre and therefore not designed to hold a tyre?

Hi, Andy - re: 1) Rims made for spokes that don't penetrate the rim aren't common, nor cheap (that I know of). 2) You gotta know and trust your own "eyeball engineering", but offhand, I can't think of what difference the tube would make in the interior design of a rim.

Never realised how little i really know about looking after bikes....it's education watching the way you work ....wish i knew you 20 years ago !

Thanks Del, a very useful thing to do to spoke wheels and may join it onto my list of jobs, I might get a different bike in the spring. I usually change my own tyres but since buying two bikes with spoke wheels, I don't so this would help me. Hope you're both safe and well.

Hi James, that sounds exciting, it's always great to get a new bike, like emarbarking on a new adventure! I've never bothered changing my own tyres till now, but it's easier than it looks, just gotta build up practice with the levers and stock up on Weetabix! Great job.. I always , back in the day preferred tubes because you could change a tube ! How times have changed. I have plug kits in every vehicle now , and have used them . Normally on work mates cars or indeed neighbours ..they are a life saver ,had a couple of bike punctures that I've plugged to get home ..totally understand why you're doing this .. Sure thing Brother, have had a few ruined days due to tubes, and interestingly the plug kit I carry, now has 4 plugs missing and not one of them has ever gone in my bike (or Penny's!), always stranded friends who never think to take precautions, always happy to help though, that's what we do aye?! 3mm thickness of the sealant sounds like overkill on weight and rotational mass. An alternative with less mass, and for those without the patience to spread sealant evenly, is to use 3M adhesive tape. Just search KZread with the phrase "tubeless motorcycle tire conversion", and you'll see the various ways that this has been done using tape. One guy did it with just $45 worth of materials.

You can adjust them Will, same as usual should you ever need to, it's unlikely it would break the seal, but if it ever did, then a quick smear of the sealant would soon re-seal it!

The bit under the sealant doesn't move..you turn the square nut on the spoke... shouldn't need doing and it's only minimal twist to effect a big change...

I found that rather therapeutic to watch!

Yes you do mate, im planning to use it for fabrication work, bending soft folds in sheet metal, curving heavy tube for frames, loads of uses other than pressing bearings in..! Thanks for your kind words buddy .

Excellent job once again.I did a similar technique for my 990 Adventure wheels.But i only use sealant on each spoke and then 3m 4420 tape on top.I wonder if your way of doing it is ok for off road use.

@@souvikprofile If you are referring to my method,4 tire changes later and hard off road riding the tet fully loaded,no problems.I used the 3m 4420 tape and some marine tupe sealant.

Thanks mate, our Penny is dab hand with the camera and editing too... and the press will be a busy machine in the future, great for fabricating exercises, soft curve bending sheet metal and bending tubes and bars, as well as fitting bearings! Moving forward thanks to the support of our wonderful Patrons... hope life is ok there, we came out of lock down today into 'Tier2', the world is getting buy again, but restrictions still in place, but good news, UK approved the vaccine today, so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel! Hope this doesn’t get lost in the sea of comments, but I’m a mechanic across the pond, here in Florida. We use a product called Ride-On Tire Balancer and Sealant.. We have been using it exclusively for 6-7 years and don’t spin balance anymore. We pump in the correct dosage of Ride-on and forget about it. We have not had a single comeback in 6-7 years for balancing.. The product hydro-dynamically balances the tire for the life of the tire without use of wheel weights. It also helps seal it if you run over a nail/screw. It makes our life so much easier. No more need for balancing!! I was very skeptical and was thinking maybe it’s good for slower bikes but not for faster sport bikes. But I put the proper dosage in my 2012 CBR1000RR then took it for a test ride at high speeds and it felt like I was riding on glass. At that point, I became a believer. The shop I wrench at, doesn’t even own a static or dynamic balancer. We only use ride-on. You should check it out! Here’s their link. Let me know what you think if you’re able to try it!! I've seen similar products to this and heard of Ride-On also, compound internal balancing is a simple concept and it works, internal tyre sealants also work, Slime, Goop, Puncture Seal, UltraSafe and several other products all do the same, a great concept, but there are skeptics as with all things, it's just another option and choice we have available to us, thanks for posting.

Did the project rims have a ‘safety bead’? I have. 2013 T100 and would like to know if the rims have a safety bead. Supposedly it is safer to go tubeless on rims with safety beads.

hi, Del love your work. my question: is really worth the hassle also price of the urethane ain't cheap. I ride my bike every day and I can't remember when I had a puncher last, maybe 10 years ago LOL. I only ride to work and is only 20 minutes ride daily. thanks for the video.

OK, as with all things, it's not just done to prevent punctures, but having had a couple of punctures in tubes it's not a day you forget! I'm not suggesting you should do it Fernando, just sharing my project that this is what I've chosen to do because I don't want the inconvenience of tubes any more... and you're lucky never to have had a puncture, indeed you can go many years without on, then get two in a month!! Just keep your fingers crossed!

@@Moonfleet41 I work 10 minutes away from home, even if I get a puncher I'll push it home. or just ride it with flat LOL I have 06 suzuki boulevard c50 and wheels are like the ones you doing up.I think is a good idea for people that travel long distances cruising from state to state.

Hi Gary, yes looking forward to finish editing Friday's video as we mount the tyre and pop the whole on the bike for a stand back look... obviously we've had a preview, so we know what it looks like, so we hope you'll have the same reaction!! And yes, whatever anyone's thoughts on this virus, it is real, so to have the news of the vaccine is only positive, it really was shown here on our news as 'good day'... logistics for the Government to sort out, but maybe this is light at the end of the tunnel, it's been a long year. Excellent execution, and a good tip on degreasing before scuffing. But... why didn't you use 3M tape instead of gobs (3mm) of sealant? It's only the very lowest layer of sealant against the rim that seals out the air, and tape is much more uniform in weight distribution. Just some sealant flattened around the nipple depressions and then a single layer of tape over them all the way around the rim would have been lighter, more uniform, and faster to apply, while providing equal sealing - IMHO.

I keep seeing KZread people using the 3M Marine Sealant 5200 with the 3M Extreme Sealing Tape 4411N. The 3M website has details about these products. For the protective shields over the nipples to allow them to rotate, I'd try just cutting out small squares of stiff plastic sheet with scissors. There are varying methods of tape application that you can find on KZread with a search on "Outex" and "tubeless conversion" and "tubeless rim". To help with burnishing the tape (pressing the tape down firmly), I'd try using the back of a teaspoon or a tire removal "spoon". 3M makes the tape in varying widths, so you can select a width appropriate for your rims. Since that tape has gotten very expensive, I'd shop around for a place to buy just a few yards of it in the desired width.

Del, I'm exploring this option as my inner tube keeps losing air. How long did you let the sealant dry and settle in between coats ? Any other tips you could recommend? Thanks mate!

It dried to touch in an hour or so, and you can muscle the tyres over it the next day.. Good luck with it, have fun.

Firstly it always does work Colin, never let me down yet and ive done half a dozen sets now... but if you want to remove some to replace or adjust a spoke.. just use a wire mop on a drill and it just tears it out down to the metal in seconds, then just fill it back in again with some fresh sealant !

It's not silicone buddy, it's a seam sealer adhesive called Upol Tiger Seal.

@@ianstorey2531 Hi again Ian, measure the size of the hole in your rim if you can, if not, then measure the dia. of the stem that's poking out of the tube where you pump the air in, go with the same size you currently have (Wemoto do all sizes on their website!)... best of luck with it mate.

Actually, I didn't already know that - about degreasing first. I was going to comment about doing degreasing after the abrasion. But, you knew better and me! One question - Wondering why you used the thin detailer's tape. Wouldn't the 1" tape be sufficient to the task?

Hi Scott, quite probably with a bit of muscling about, but the 5mm tape follows the curve of the wheel perfectly, and I have a couple of rolls handy, so using what I had! Trying the bend the wider tape is a little more challenging as it's less willing to stretch round the curve!

@@Moonfleet41 - Yes, for rims with lots of lateral (side-to-side) curvature, bending tape in 2 directions (around the rim and also up the sides of the rim) requires the tape to stretch as well as bend, and it might pull loose with time. What other KZreadrs have done when taping rims is to use 3 strips of a narrower tape - one for the center to cover the spoke holes, and one on either side to climb a little way up the side of the rim. Since 3M makes the tape in various widths, the installer can choose widths to suit the lateral curvature of the rim.

Im watching a man put roof sealant on a bike wheel.......and what's worrying is I'm enjoying this!

Take a wire wheel in your drill and just buzz that area of sealant out of the way, no problem, then just re-seal it when you're done.

Hi Paul, I imagine it has some kind of influence in preventing the nipples turning, but I imagine it's purely a happy by-product and as for what it's worth, I've never had to adjust a spoke in my life, perhaps I've just been lucky, but in 40yrs and well over 70 bikes, with probably half of them having spokes, it's never once been an issue... perhaps it was in the old days, but that's even the same for old bikes from the 70's, they've always been fine!

Class , well worth the effort and hard work.

Is there a cure time between applications? Like...You did the spoke holes, then another layer, then another layer. Do you have to wait between? Looks amazing, my friend. Hope Penny and yourself are doing well!

Hey buddy, nope, I did it all in one go, did the spoke holes, which took about 20mins, poking them all in to squeeze any air out, then spread that in nice and level, then build up the layers in 2-3 separate applications, till it's 3mm thick... it stayed pliable, although as I said in the video, with a much warmer garage this time, it was definitely curing quicker!... 10degrees cooler, and you could have left it half the day and come back to it... but one single application gets the job done, curing takes about 48hrs... (it's still tacky to the touch after 24hrs, then feels like the surface of a tyre the next day)... and thanks for the kind words, we're both fine, working round all the covid rules here, but keeping safe... hope you're the same there and getting out on the bad ass bike before the dark months come! D&Px

Does the degreaser damage paintwork if day I was to use it to clean an engine ?

No, the degreaser doesn't damage paint, but like any solvent, don't leave it on there long term, get it on there to get the grease off then wash it off with some water, as you would any solvent.

Del quick question. Where did you get the 17 inch wheel for this project from. I have a Thunderbird and I'm thinking of changing my wheels and doing the same as you going tubeless. As always love the whole series and picking up loads of tips. But you already knew that.....Lol. Awesome as always Brother.

Easy buddy, just take an 8mm drill bit and twist it through by hand where the rim hole is... shown in the last video and again in the next one!

Your workmanship and thoroughness are outstanding! From prep and set-up to removal of the tape, everything was well thought out and done with skill. I'm now interested in hearing if you noticed any change in steering quickness or stability due to removal of the inner tubes' rotational mass.

Hi Max, no link on the sealant, it's just Upol Tiger Seal and bought in Halfords, click and collect! And the tyre valve is the same as the one in the last video, it's the 8mm screw type and they're about £3 each from Wemoto... check the video Friday, there'll be a demonstration (or on the last video as already done!).

Hi Gav, i use Wemoto for general parts, and anything more focused like that i just go to the main dealer, you'll hardly ever find an independent parts store selling engine internals, maybe gasket sets, clutch plates and even shims, but they are all service parts and in general demand.. once you get to more specific internals, its really only the dealerships that will have the resources to get hold of them. Good luck with it buddy, let us know how you get on.

Never had to Frank, on any spoke wheel I've owned, but for what it's worth, 3mm of rubber sealant doesn't prevent the spoke nipple from running with a spanner, and if in some way it breaks the seal, just a smear of sealant over the top of the split would re-seal it straight away.

Yer gonna want to keep it when you’ve finished it Del, very interested to see what the colour of the new paintwork is gonna be😃👍

I am indeed mate, am loving it more every step, finding it hard to sell the Harley and happy to keep it whilst there's not much selling at the moment, and this may well go the same way!

Thanks mate, that's very kind, just trying to bring a little bit of routine to a mad crazy year, glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for your support too, we couldn't do this without you!

I love it Del .. my wife got Holby City and now, Ive got Del Boys Garage to watch👍🏻.. can you do it every Tuesday...for about 45min if pos..👍🏻😂

Grand job again del One word of caution only In future be careful how you draw your hand across spoke nipple heads as some times they can incorrectly formed leaving razor sharp barbs sticking up or if they are tightened by a blade driver then again they can be left with razor sharp edges ( nasty cut fingers ) Watching from home today as I was in a serious car smash yesterday Other driver to blame on wrong side of road doing more than limit My car is totalled and I did manage to put my head thru the windscreen unfortunately but other than cut on forehead and sore all over I'm fine More time to watch del boys vids for a few days 👍👍

Bloody Hell mate, that sounds frightening, and it's good to hear you're ok, How much worse could that have turned out mate... looks like your guardian angel was flying with you yesterday.. I hope nobody else was hurt, i hear that December is referred to as the silly season for this. God speed for a full and complete recovery mate, and hope the insurers put you back where you should be with a replacement car.. @@Moonfleet41 Not being indestructible del but I'm 6.4 19 stone ex rugby player To be honest I kind of peeled the wrecked Avensis off and got out absolutely raging Trust me guys im fine just sore Motor is mangled though absolutely trashed Been sin died from riding bike for a few days because of concussion which is a total bummer 😒😒

No coats mate, i did it in one go, fill spoke holes first, poke it in to pop out the bubbles, spread that flat,, then three layers spread all round.. takes about an hour, and stays pliable throughout, cures in 48 hours..!

Nice one again Del 👌 there's a wheel builder near me, im thinking about the possibility of having spoked wheels made for my M1800 as I've never seen it done & in doing so i could experiment with new tyre sizes, hmmm big is best I'm already 160 front & 280 rear. Hmmmmm ideas ideas. Keep em coming lad.
