Triumph Stag 'Borg Warner 35' to the Rescue!

Well, after the Right Royal Challenge of last weekend where the 'Arry The Stag! Boys had a whole heap of fun (was that fun??!!) getting UES 591S home from Kings Lynn (well, very nearly!). TR Tony bombs up the Motorway the other way again this week to check on progress with the newly acquired Stag and to see first hand what magic is being done to the beloved Motor!

Your new gf looks really clean underneath. All those other little problems bring back memories of my first 70s cars. I hope everything gets done in time, Tony. I like the new seat paddings too.

Would be handy if you quoted a few ballpark figures for these repairs.

Ah Triumph Stag a great car of its time and still beautiful today Its only minor problems were it needed a decent engine Chevy 283 V8 Ford 289 V8 or Rover 215 V8 then a decent 5 or 6 speed gearbox that didn't drop oil everywhere and better ratios in differential just for a little more pick up Also a much more efficient radiator to cure the constant overheating and some sort of standization of front suspension as some used the components of Jensen Inceptors Other than that a brilliant car ??.?

Thanks Michael - I think the Stag now is how it should have been back in the 1970's..with build quality really bad and quality control (as well as car strikes) aweful!! Over 8,000 still on the road in the UK and many of the glitches have been sorted, meaning a lot of people reliably use them for extensive road trips here and on the Continent. Fully agree, they are a joy to behold and so much fun to drive!! All the best and thanks for posting! Kind regards TR T

Hi change the other Stag you have to a manual 4 speed + overdrive you see a big difference in RPM compared to the auto box.

@@ArryTheStag The ZF 4 (4HP22) speed auto is THE conversion for any stag, ive done it and ive had manual O/D ones as well, the ZF equiped stag is the the best

Hi Tony, I wonder if you might be able to help me. In the late 70's I was shopping for a Stag and after trying 3 or 4 autos I bought a manual box car and loved it (should have kept it); so my question to you is, what do Stag owners do in todays era if they want the 'luxury' of an auto but the performance of a manual - are there any newer more efficient auto boxes that could be installed in a Stag. Such as for example the 6 speed ZF unit ?

Nice British marque, pity an updated version was not manufactured, like jaguar xjs which lasted over 20 years

Have J-Type manual + OD Rebuild of G'box resulted in a whine. (Grrrr) Did Triumph use the Stag g'box in any other cars? I am in Australia and parts ... scarce.
